Re: 2014 Retirements & 2015 Player Movement Discussions
What you say Lee may well occur, salary cap reduction included.
However, I don't see a fix in any of this.
The sanfl / afl relationship seems to be refining each year. Maybe not perfectly, but I see the sanfl / ammos & country relationship a more immediate threat.
To me a reduction in salary cap would just expose sanfl clubs to more pressure.
Something has to give somewhere eventually.
Either the sanfl standard drops (and with it relevance and interest and the afl breeding ground suffers too) or some coordination of the cap with ammos / country leagues occurs to stabilise player exodus and the ability to recruit.
Without looking at the overall model across all tiers, it is just seems like bandaid upon bandaid.

Re: 2014 Retirements & 2015 Player Movement Discussions
Firstly I think we have to face the reality that we are, right now, a feeder competition for the AFL. But that shouldn't mean that we can't also be a strong, viable, attractive and well supported competition in our own right. As Lee said, nothing stays the same and the job for administrators, at all levels, is to restructure, firstly our own individual clubs, then the competition as a whole, in ways that achieve that aim. I do think that the Crows reserves model (And hopefully Port will pick it up this year) gives us some pointers to the way we might restructure the other 8 clubs. At A grade level, a squad of contracted players, paid at something like present levels. Backed up with a group of call-up players from the country and amateur leagues, who receive a fixed per game payment. I was discussing this whole issue recently with the secretary of the River Murray League, an old friend, and I know that country leagues are looking at a range of ideas to save clubs from their own folly, in paying ridiculous sums to a handful of "marquee" players. None of this will be easy and the eventual solutions may be a long way from my suggestions. But I have confidence in the good judgement of the people who's job it is to deal with these issues.

Exciting young defender from the Top End on his way to the SANFL by the looks of it...

I hope it happens this time, BP.
The SANFL could do with exciting young defenders.

i've had an update, it's Ben Cavarra & apparently Norwood & Central are talking to him too & he won a Morrish Medal (no idea, what competition that is)

He is a very good player, but I thought he was staying with Frankston. At this stage of the year, I'd find it hard to believe any club would have enough Salary Cap room left.

The Eagles haven't lost much and have signed 4 or 5 delisted AFL players (some returning).
They'd be nudging the cap already?

Well i was told several years back by a person high up in the eagles, like centrals in their hey day they offer recruits the chance to play finals/ grand finals football over money ! believe me or not doesnt matter
Plus dont believe what you read on another footy site the recruits are all accepted no matter who they are or where they come from !!
This is not aimed at you bayman
Sorry but some of the jealousy shown by other fans at the eagles is over the top !

just to clarify, i was only trying to get a laugh with that statement, nothing more, nothing less & would have made the same comment under the same context with any team, mine included

Re: 2014 Retirements & 2015 Player Movement Discussions
All clubs get questioned about their cap. Some because they have previous "form" in terms of breaching, others because they bring a few name players in at the same time. I've heard people question Sturt's this season (despite the fact they've been living on the smell of an oily rag for a decade or so) and many people questioned the Bays last year, even though they propped up the ladder. Those questions lose there effect after a while because no club is spared, particularly if they're winning.

Re: 2014 Retirements & 2015 Player Movement Discussions
Without wishing to sound like I am "defending", I have heard from people in or close to management that Sturt have been well under the cap in recent seasons as a result of the financial situation. The retirements of a number of the senior players would have also helped for this season.
It still rankles me that we still have to talk about a cap when 2 clubs do not. Just doesn't sit right.
