Retirements 2019
A topic to perhaps to consolidate the discussion re retirements of players this season.
Sturt has announced the retirement at season end of centre half back, Jack Stephens.
Jack was arguably the general of the Blues miserly defensive unit which has been pretty solid since the 2016 premiership year.
This year's state captain, Jack always provided dependable rebound and courage.
He will be sorely missed in defence next year.

Fraser Evans, John Greenslade and Aidan Riley all finalise their careers at Sturt.

All these guys would still have plenty to offer if they continued.
It seems that the pressures of this level tend to curtail careers by late 20s in the current environment.
I doub that will change any time soon.
But these 4 retirements at the Blues leaves our experienced player list much thinner.
Particularly the defence. Evans and Stephens were the pillars in the back half and almost impossible to replace at once.
Hopefully no more follow them...

Re: Retirements 2019
Does anyone know the current SANFL salary cap per club and whether it will be increased anytime soon?
I'm sure this is a factor in too many players who still have years in them retiring from the SANFL prematurely.

The salary cap for league is $400K, $380K for West and South, I think. A decision by the wise at the SANFL, which has led to lower crowds and patronage, all for $20K. Even transfer fees have to come out of the cap for West and South only. Madness.
Start of year contracts can't exceed this, so because of injuries, most clubs actually spend about $20K or so less than that.

Cheers Lee. Heard any rumours about an increase next season?

Why is there a lower cap for West and South?
Both the SANFL and AFL ever find innovative new ways of keeping the playing field skewed.

No Manny, and not at all likely.
The SANFL seem to me to be wanting to reduce it more than increase it.

West and South get extra 'equalisation funding'. For that they have a lot of restrictions and conditions placed on them, including a lower salary cap and a much greater oversight of their operations. In my view, these restictions are excessive.
As for the salary cap, we have a competition they run which has two teams on an unrestricted salary cap for the bulk of their players, where one player would sometimes earn more than the entire opposition salary cap.
We then have 6 teams on a full salary cap. These teams, if they recruit a player from another SANFL club, can pay the transfer fee over and above their salary cap. West and South, in the same position, have it deducted from their salary cap. To me, this is a double penalty, but the SANFL have never accepted that. I suspect and hope they at least reverse this impost soon.
Of course, the SANFL know far more than us, so I'm sure the $20K West can't spend on players won't be far overtaken by the loss of supporters going to the games and the subsequent loss of patronage in the venue because they're not as competitive as the teams who beat them with a full salary cap.

South also lost all the salary/transfer fees we paid for McLean and Knoll who we lost to Sydney in that F---g useless Mid year draft calamity. Asked SANFL for some extra space in the cap after blowing money on those two....reply was in the negative.

Would it be better for the two clubs if they rejected the equalisation payments so they could operate on level footing with the other clubs in TPP and transfer fee allocations?

I'm not sure, but I think Glenelg may have done that and if so, I applaud them. Can't speak for South, but both they and Glenelg are much worse off than West financially and South may not have had much choice because of that.
My thoughts have always been what you suggest, but the SANFL have rejected dropping salary cap restrictions as a condition every time. I contend West would lose more than the $20K saved on this by being barely competitive, through gate receipts and venue attendance.
They won't budge, though, even though West have the lowest football spend in the competition already.

Oh wow - So you're saying if West approached the SANFL and said "Thanks but no thanks - You keep the equalisation and we'll run under the same conditions as (most) other clubs", the SANFL can basically say "No, you'll operate how we say you'll operate?"

Sorry, missed this.
No, West can say they could operate the same as other clubs.
