Not sure how many SANFL Clubs would be able to pay for a player such as Edwards. The days of PAYING high prices for ex AFL players in the SANFL maybe gone

Just ask Glenelg...

every club has ''creating ways'' some more clever than others, Central has been the top of the bunch while others have paid the penalty, Norwoods' Penalty ended up being a blessing i would think

Yep, all clubs have ways of doing it. Some stay inside the rules, others don't.

I still think those days of creative ways are gone.
Money is tight everywhere.
Glenelg recruited heavily this year and they still finished bottom and they borrowed 500k from the council

I think creativity exists at all clubs, but on a very minor scale compared with say 10 years ago.

We all know clubs have ways to get players on board with financial incentives outside of what is paid in the salary cap...

I would think most, if not all of those practices these days are within the scope of the cap .. Ie, players can perform work for the club, or a board members company provided they are paid genuine market rates and not some inflated salary (that's my understanding anyway, but I'm far from an expert on the subject).

Re: 2014 Retirements & 2015 Player Movement Discussions
I have to disagree with you, Phil.
I've been in a position to observe working with the salary cap and I would guarantee that it's not all of them.
Recent changes have made it easier for clubs to ensure they're within the cap. The grey area relate to employment, as you rightly say.
Scrunch is correct about that.
A club with wealthy supporters or plenty of money has more opportunity to provide employment. Nothing wrong with that, of course.
The money some clubs have paid for recruits recently is a problem and you can't keep within the cap if you have more than a few high paid players, unless you can provide employment.

Re: 2014 Retirements & 2015 Player Movement Discussions
I think these days, as a general rule of thumb, the most critical inducements to players are:
1. Appropriate employment being offered/secured by a club (that might extend to a partner too)
2. Opportunity to be drafted/re-drafted by an AFL club - Does the club provide me with that opportunity?
Realistically, if a player is good enough then point 2 should be met by all clubs, although some moreso than others.

Yes.
That's correct for recruits in general, but the 'mates at a club' factor is also important.

Central District has lost star recruit Johann Wagner to a Reality TV Show and now he will play for the Port Adelaide Football Club...
Of course, as a Rookie List player, he will be playing against the Dogs, for the Port Adelaide Football Club's AFL Reserves side in the SANFL, which is the Port Adelaide Magpies...
