i watched the pride of the bay dvd last night & when interviewing Lawrie it is mentioned he wore number 3

Ok he seems more 3 than 2, so I will update my list. cheers.

And to the lucky last number today.

I've tried to contain the 1s to those who wore it, but not just captain.
Some clubs adopted #1 for the captain religiously (like Port) but others not so consistently.

Some played most of their careers in #1 even though captain, like my recollection of Marker, so I guess they need to go somewhere.

Some #1s...
Robert Shearman (St)
Peter Marker (G)
John Riley (NA)
Dean Mobbs (CD)
Richard Champion (W)
Brendan Howard (St)
Don Lindner (NA)
Gary Window (CD)
Ken Farmer (NA)
Ian Mackay (NA)

I would think most clubs would have a star line-up of Guernsey 1 players.

For West;

Tim Symes, not captain and played 194 games.

Kevin Beswick, father of Mark, 113 games (on top of his Port games).

Bob Loveday, 263 games and 2 B & F's.

Johnny Taylor, one of the three Taylor brothers, 203 games.

Brian Faehse, 224 games and a grandstand,

A bloke called Neil Kerley.

And one of the all-time greats, Bruce McGregor, 103 games, 5 B & F's and coached Glenelg to their first premiership.

I haven't commented while this great topic has been going, I have been too busy taking in the names of all players that have been mentioned and it brings back some great memories of the past.

Coming from a devout Westies supporter I have to name a player that I believe is the greatest to wear number one and he has not bee mentioned.

Geof Motley

258 games for Port Adelaide from 1954-1966

He was the only man to appear in all 9 of the magpies premiership teams between 1954 and 1965.
He was never dropped from the league team during his career and was never reported.
He represented the state 28 times, oh and he won the magarey medal in 1964.

I think we listed him at #17 which was his original number.

Is this your favourite site now or still SA Footy ? Its a good topic hey.Lets hope it continues in the footy season.

What a strange question waddayamean i am not sure what you are seeking but hope following responds to your question

firstly, i have only one favourite footy chat site and that is the bloods forum http://www.bloodntars.net/ closely followed by the official westies website.

on both the two main sa footy chat sites i am made welcome and treated with very good respect ---- both sites have many and varied interesting discussion and both sites have many knowledgeable posters who i highly value their thoughts ---- on this site i have enjoyed chambos item whilst on the other site i love the no afl in the sanfl page

On both sites any question or comment i raise is always responded to in a humorous manner and in many cases is backed up with a pm giving greater detail or clarification.

its a bit like going to the football and only watching one team then you miss half of the best league players in South Australia --- surely you accept that both sites are great and both have very clever posters --- why would i chose one over the other when i can have my cake and eat it too Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

i think we are a bit lucky actually to have 2 great chat groups available and would be shattered if either closed (not likely imo).

hope above responds to your question mate ---- reference second part of your post i am going stir crazy for the sanfl starts and then the detailed and enjoyable discussion on players, coaches and how games were won and lost realy begins, i am sure 2017 is going to be a boomer season with west adelaide finishing top 8

reference testies remarks about geof motley.

for many years Doug Thomas had in his office and treasured a picture geof motley gave to him --- basically it was a picture of geof taking a running midair mark with one leg straight out front and other leg tucked under showing muscles on muscles (geof was very strongly built) but geof had had dougs head put on it with the caption of "you wished"

Doug told me that he rated him with barrie roberan a fair call from a hard nosed footy man

A bit more on Geof Motley....

Jeff Pash’s eloquent tribute admirably evokes and encapsulates the Motley style:

He is fearless and resolute, but the resolution is jolly and good-humoured - no kicking in ruck. The shape of his flying play for the ball and of his recovery is brave and pleasing; he flies with abandon and bounces up smiling from some impossible rolls and spills.

Others certainly have more elegant techniques, and they, too, are admired in their place; but Motley is unique.

After finishing at Port Adelaide Geof Motley went on to coach North Adelaide in 1967-1969, taking the club to 3rd, 3rd, and 5th.

Since retiring, Motley has been bestowed with several honours including life membership of Port Adelaide and the SANFL, and membership of the South Australian Football Hall of Fame and the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

In 2001 Motley was named on a half-back flank in Port Adelaide's 'Greatest Team of All Time'.

Geof is of course, the father of Surt and Calton's Peter Motley.
Motley is the second cousin is former Port Adelaide captain Warren Tredrea.

He was also the man who engineered the deal for his son and Craig Bradley (who were great mates) going to Carlton in 1986.

Note: "Geof" is the correct spelling of his name.

Ok what number today? That's right we're done!
But not quite. Now the fun begins.

I thought it might be interesting if you selected a side using unique numbers only.
You can't use the same number for 2 players at the one club either.

Say 22-45 to start with.

Here's some refreshers for you. Don't feel obliged to restrict it to these, they're just suggestions.

45 Paul Rouvray (G) Peter Jonas (CD) Adam Richardson (CD)
44 John Platten (CD) Tom Warhurst (N) Lachlan Button (G)
43 David Grenvold (G) Andrew Aish (N) Adam Switala (CD)
42 Mick Redden (NA) Scott Bassett (N) Matthew Kelly (N)
41 Lee Blake (N) Robbie Thompson (G) Jeremy Aufderheide (CD)
40 Jim West (G) Steven Schwerdt (CD) Brooke Fogden (WA)
39 Seamus Maloney (St) Colin Dewhurst (SA) Stephen Boehm (CD)
38 Lyle Skinner (CD) Robert Magarey (St) John Falting (WA)
37 Peter Vivian (CD) David Kernahan (G) Peter Winter (WA)
36 Scott Salisbury (G) John Schneebichler (SA) Andrew Downes (St)
35 Rod Jameson (G) Rod Pope (N) Peter Bennett (NA)
34 John Kantilaftas (WA) Geoff Wiseman (St) Nathan Steinberner (CD)
33 Keith Kuhlmann (G) Jim Thiel (N) Rudi Mandemaker (CD)
32 Paul Northeast (PA) Bruce Lindsay (WT) Paul Arnold (NA)
31 John Seebohlm (G) Ron Kneebone (N) Stuart Palmer (SA)
30 Dennis Sacshe (NA) Neil Button (N) Grant Fielke (WA)
29 Michael Taylor (N) Bob Hammond (NA) Roger Luders (WA)
28 Darren Smith (PA) John Wynne (N) Paul Weston (Gl)
27 Bohdan Jaworskyj (NA) Ryan Ferguson (WA) Rod Seekamp (N)
26 Malcolm Greenslade (St) Bruce Light (PA) Chris Duthy (G)
25 Mick Nunan (St) Phil Brooksby (SA) Dexter Kennedy (WA)
24 Rick Davies (St) Kym Hodgeman (G) Trevor Hughes (WA)
23 Tony Giles (PA) Rick MacGowan (CD) Ian Borchard (WA)
22 Greg Phillips (PA) Robbert Klomp (St) Bruce Winter (N)

Have some fun with it.

Here's one...how do you reckon they'd go?

FF 25 Mick Nunan (St)                26 Malcolm Greenslade (St) 42 Mick Redden (NA)
HF 36 John Schneebichler (SA) 28 John Wynne (N)                35 Peter Bennett (NA)
C 37 Peter Vivian (CD)        32 Bruce Lindsay (WT)        30 Grant Fielke (WA)
HB 23 Tony Giles (PA)                27 Bohdan Jaworskyj (NA) 33 Jim Thiel (N)
FB 34 John Kantilaftas (WA) 22 Bruce Winter (N)        31 Stuart Palmer (SA)
Foll 24 Rick Davies (St)         29 Michael Taylor (N)        44 John Platten (CD)
Res 45 Peter Jonas (CD)        38 Lyle Skinner (CD)        40 Jim West (G)

This sort of exercise just shows how in the good old days clubs religiously used the low numbers, whereas now you have a squad of about 50 players (league / ressies) all with a unique number.

I have a vague childhood recollection that the reserves used low numbers as well as the league and therefore, may account why blokes had a few different numbers when playing league. Anyone got a more definitive take on this?

Centrals seemed an exception to this rule, particularly during the 70s and 80s.

What i posted on other site was not that it is my favourite site rather the actual post read
This is my favourite forum and note that no one has posted for a while where previously was new posts daily so i thought i would just post anyway

Refering specifically on how much i enjoy the no afl in sanfl discussion.

I am 67 years old and admit in my senility i put forum where perhaps topic is more correct

Eitherway i feel all others reading my post understood clearly what i was refering too

Hope this clearly answers your concerns

When i started on west adelaide senior volunteer staff about 35 years ago my recolection is that the league team and the reserves team had separate sets of jumpers and had separate staff, similarly the u17 and u19 each had thier own set of jumpers and separate staff --it obviously was easier in those days to get volunteers

Round 20, August 14 2010.

You were quite right Flag10

Josh Carr was 20 Rd 1-8 (Hitchcock was 8 in those rounds)
Then from Rd 19-1SF he was No 8 as you suggested.

I've made the corrections to the Database - Just finished Glenelg,Central Districts, North, Norwood and West 1988 H&A and all Sides Escort Cup. Just Port, Sturt, South, Woodville and Torrens to Go and cross reference with their annual reports. Then 1897-1920, 1988-2016 will be done Rd X Rd.

I'm going the other way. I thought it might be more interesting, though harder, to pick a best possible line-up from those who wore the same number.
So, this is a team of players who all wore number 2.
