I saw Theo (Hank?) Lindner. Naturally played in the shadow of Don, but he was a very good player in his own right.

My memory of him is taking strong marks in the last line of defence?

Glynn Williams played over 180 games in 3. I think he left West (with Jack Oatey?) and captained Sturt?

I would suggest he did, it seems he only played a couple of league games for Port in 73 and went to North in 75.

Darrell Cahill bio...

During his time at Port Adelaide he won four premierships. He was arguably the greatest utility being the only player nominated in three different positions in Port Adelaide Football Club squad of 40 greatest ever players, being nominated as a small forward, midfielder and defender.

He was runner up in Port Adelaide Football Club best and fairest 5 times. He had the most disposals in the league 3 times in his career. Playing initially across half back or on a wing, but later mainly as a rover, he was hard working and industrious, and formed an excellent on ball partnership with Brian Cunningham. His 263 league games between 1969 and 1982 included the winning Grand Finals of 1977, 1979 (when he was best afield), 1980 and 1981.

I remember stories of his half time ritual (can of coke, pie and a smoke). Hard to see that happening today.

Along with being a star Australian rules footballer, Cahill was an accomplished golfer winning the North Adelaide Golf Club championship in 1967 and then went on to represent the state in juniors and seniors. His first handicap was 4 and he got that down to scratch in his first year of golf.

He was quoted on the front page of the Perth player as the best first year player Norman Von Nida had ever seen. In 1969 Cahill represented South Australia and playing against Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland his only loss was to Jack Newton.

After his career in the sanfl he returned to golf in 1983 and played until 1989 winning four more club championships, this time at Riverside golf club.

He won a champion of champions at Grange golf club and in 1989 he again represented South Australia and also won the state championship the same year which was played at Kooyonga.

james Ezard, a Magarey Medallist and Peter Meuret, 206 games, wore 2.

Of course, the wonderful Robert Day also won 3 B & F's.

Justin Casserly was a nuggety little rover who played a lot of 2's footy at Central in number 3 throughout the mid to late 90's through to the early 2000's.

He also won a U17's McCullum Medal in a 1992, a Reserves Magarey Medal in season 2000 and ended up moving to North Adelaide in the mid 2000's.

Phil Haughan was a magnificent footballer - a tall ruck rover type, but with a build suitable for a key position. I think he was runner up in the Magarey one year. Was he recruited from W.A.?

I read in one of the budgets I was going through that Ron Kneebone was only 5'10 and a half inches. Pretty amazing for a CHB.

Probably best remembered for a single superlative season, overall Phil Haughan was a footballer who perhaps failed to do full justice to his considerable all round ability. Nevertheless, he can count himself among those rare individuals who played football at the top level in three states. Tall, thin and wiry, he was an excellent and sometimes spectacular mark, had sure ball handling skills, but was sometimes let down by wayward kicking. He began his senior league career with East Perth in 1965, and suffered the immense frustration of being in the Royals’ losing Grand Final teams of 1966, 1968 and 1969.

Most of his games were played as a ruck-rover, but he was also used at centre half forward on occasion. In 1971 he moved to Central District and promptly produced the outstanding season referred to above, winning the Bulldogs’ best and fairest award, finishing joint second in the Magarey Medal count, and helping his club to qualify for its first ever finals series.

Haughan played a total of 62 SANFL games in three seasons at Centrals before returning to East Perth, where he took his final tally of WAFL games to 111. In 1976 he was appointed captain-coach of Launceston and promptly enjoyed the first premiership success of his career as the Blues overcame North Launceston by a point in that year’s Grand Final.

Haughan also played interstate football for the first time in his career in 1976, representing Tasmania against Queensland at North Hobart, when he kicked five goals, and against New South Wales in Sydney. In addition, he won that year’s A.W. Orchard Trophy for the best NTFA player in the intrastate representative series. Phil Haughan returned to Perth at the end of a 1977 season that saw his Launceston side bow out of premiership contention at the first semi final stage.¹ He rounded out his career with eight games at Swan Districts in 1978.

One of my all time favourite footballers, and childhood hero, was Grant Coffee.

Coff played 167 League games and is a 2 x Leading Goal Kicker at the Dogs, in '93 and '95.

Was selected by Fitzroy at pick 55 in about 1989 but I'm pretty sure he never ended up over to Victoria.

Left the club in the mid-90's for a year as player coach of Barossa Districts and then came back for one more year at the Dogs.

Played a few games in about Div 4 SAAFL with Golden Grove and I was lucky enough to also play in a game with Coff when I was out there, which was fun.

Obviously carved out a good media career as well, broadcasting with SEN, LifeFM 5RPH, ABC TV and the SANFL Stream Team.

Pretty chuffed to have had worked with him in the media over the last 6 or 7 years and to have won a couple of Media Awards with him was cool.

Is media classified as amateur stations Phil ? I know the ABC isn't .I imagine the SANFL produce the awards then ? Did 7 get an award this year as I thought their coverage was a big step up and reached a bigger audience obviously.

I can't wait until we get to No. 1 and the great Larry Watson. Vital Cog in the Dynamic '83 West Adelaide side. Great Football family, but I just went and watched Larry!! Number 1 in my book!

i watched the pride of the bay dvd last night & when interviewing Lawrie it is mentioned he wore number 3

Yes, yes and no.

All the SANFL broadcasters are Amateur operations, based on the fact they are not full time operations.

There is no full time coverage of the league so it is always going to be reliant on the semi-professional coverage.

The SANFL chose not have a Media Awards for 2016, so season 2015 was the last time that they had an Awards night.

I can only assume that it would have been a part of a cost-reduction exercise.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I'm pretty sure Robert Schaefer wore number 2 when at the Dogs.
