So, this is a team of players who all wore number 2.

Meuret  Grenfell  Ginever
D.Cahill  D.Lindner  P.Motley
Rosewarne Simunsen  Chessell
Day  Kneebone  David Kappler
Gibbs  W. Phillis  Spiers

R: Inglis  Haughan  von Bertouch

Int: Hines, Poulter, Virgo.

Rosewarne wore number 3......so off the top of my head replace him with Backwell

On the 2's, footage does not do justice to Peter Motley in his Sturt days. Even at that age, so clean and crisp with his skills and a brilliant contested mark, his ability to hit the ground running after a mark and deliver such pinpoint disposal was just fantastic to watch. I was only 10 rows back at Football Park the night he took "that mark" against Victoria in 1984 - a phenomenal match that deserves separate discussion - and it is still one of the loudest moments I've ever experienced at a match. To have 50,000+ fans seemingly rise as one to applaud such a crucial mark was amazing.

Certainly a case of "what if", tragically. A very fitting tribute that a ground on which he provided so many great moments in such a short time is named after him.

Ditto to that.
You can still see him in the Mackay stand attending games. He often sits with John Halbert and Michael Graham.

Chambo posted a couple of pages back that the snouts site had him as playing in 2, so I assumed he appeared in both.

Good point.

I'd say 1, 7, 10 and 17 would be up there, off the top of my head.

Memory refresher on numbers 1-21.

These are very post WW2-centric, but I think we have had some difficulty remembering what numbers the older players wore, at least for the major part of their careers. Pre about 1970, the lower numbers certainly were much more prevalent.

21 Peter Beythein (CD) Craig Bradley (PA) Glen Rosser (N)
20 Neville Hayes (PA) Wayne Phillis (G) Colin Casey (St)
19 Michael Graham (St) Fred Phillis (G) Glyn Hewitt (Wd/WA)
18 Rodney Maynard (N) Jeff Bray (WA) Brenton Miels (St)
17 Geoff Motley (PA) Mark Naley (SA) Lindsay Head (WT)
16 Brenton Adcock (St) Peter Darley (SA) Paul Thomas (CD)
15 John Halbert (St) Fred Bills (WT) Sam Rudolph (G)
14 Jack Cahill (PA) Garry McIntosh (N) Ray Huppatz (Wd)
13 Malcolm Blight (W) Ken Eustice (WA) Tony Antrobus (NA)
12 Graham Cornes (G) Jim Deane (SA) Barry Norsworthy (CD)
11 Sandy Nelson (St) Scott Hodges (PA) Phil Gallagher (N)
10 Barrie Robran (NA) Chris McDermott (G) Rick Schoff (St)
9 Neville Roberts (N) Tony Symonds (G) Barry Stringer (NA)
8 Paul Bagshaw (St) Michael Aish (N) Brian Cunningham (PA)
7 Russell Ebert (PA) Ray Hayes (WA) Keith Thomas (N)
6 Bob Quinn (PA) Tony Burgan (St) Craig Williams (WA)
5 Len Fitzgerald (St) Tim Evans (PA) Peter Carey (G)
4 Stephen Kernahan (G) Stuart Cochrane (CD) David Tiller (NA)
3 John McFarlane (G) Ralph Sewer (Wd) Darel Hart (NA)
2 Ross Gibbs (G) Darrell Cahill (PA) Peter Meuret (WA)
1 Peter Marker (G) Ken Farmer (NA) Bob Hank (WWT)

And a couple of efforts in selecting a side from these.

The RED team
FF 2 Darrell Cahill (PA) / 1 Ken Farmer (NA) / 6 Bob Quinn (PA)
HF 13 Malcolm Blight (Wd) / 10 Barrie Robran (NA) / 3 Ralph Sewer (Wd)
C 19 Michael Graham (St) / 7 Russell Ebert (PA) / 17 Lindsay Head (WT)
HB 21 Craig Bradley (PA) / 11 Sandy Nelson (St) / 15 Fred Bills (WT)
FB 18 Rodney Maynard (N) / 20 Colin Casey (St) / 16 Brenton Adcock (St)
Foll 5 Peter Carey (G) / 8 Paul Bagshaw (St) / 14 Garry McIntosh (N)
Res 4 Stephen Kernahan (G) / 12 Jim Deane (SA) / 9 Neville Roberts (N)

The BLUE Team
FF 3 Darel Hart (NA) / 19 Fred Phillis (G) / 21 Peter Beythein (CD)
HF 12 Graham Cornes (G) / 5 Len Fitzgerald (St) / 15 John Halbert (St)
C 14 Jack Cahill (PA) / 1 Peter Marker (G) / 13 Ken Eustice (WA)
HB 18 Jeff Bray (WA) / 17 Geoff Motley (PA) / 10 Rick Schoff (St)
FB 2 Ross Gibbs (G) / 4 Stuart Cochrane (CD) / 20 Neville Hayes (PA)
Foll 16 Peter Darley (SA) / 7 Keith Thomas (N) / 8 Michael Aish (N)
Res 9 Tony Symonds (G) / 6 Tony Burgan (St) / 11 Phil Gallagher (N)

Reckon if RED v BLUE ever played, it would have been a cracking game!

I think this thread has just about run its race.

I always find it interesting to reminisce about those greats of the game that have gone before us. Many of us are old enough to remember most of them (post war). It is just a pity that there isn't more accessible footage of the pre circa 1965 era.

I guess it highlights just how important club historians are to preserve this knowledge.

Thanks to all contributors I think it was fun and kept us a bit footy focused in a long off-season.

Cheers,

Do you have any details, contacts, for Cliff Giddings from West Torrens? He used to teach at Salisbury High School and we have a reunion next month. JenniW
