Eagles and Sturt have played 70 times I think, Eagles lead 51-19.

Eagles by 70 points if dry.

EG 1079
ST 1214
SA 1286
CD 1398
AC 1401
PA 1524
NW 1527
NA 1640
GL 1697
WA 2020

Thats how many points the teams conceded in 18 minor round games
The 2 best performed defensive teams are playing off in the 2016 Grand Final

2015 was different
Eagles once again had the best performed defence conceding 1001 points
West Adelaide had the 6th best performed defence conceding 1342 points
EG  1392 for 1001 against
WA 1634 for 1342 against

2016
I had thought pre season that with the new rules , that teams with defensive game plans might suffer
Norwood did, but the Eagles did not

Sturt remind me of the way Norwood played when Nathan Bassett first took over
Marty Mattner has done a great job with his well drilled team

Sturt have lost 3 times to the Eagles in 2016
West had lost 3 times to the Eagles in 2015 ...

I've seen every Eagles game this year and they have the best defense personnel wise but do not have a defensive game plan..it's an offensive game plan but teams play a shut down style when playing us... chipping ball around in back line holding onto the ball...tagging multiple players....the times where teams have taken us on (except crows) we have kicked big scores

On this day 2001
Phil Carmans position as Sturts coach was terminated
Sturt finished 6th that season with 9 wins
Phil did a good job transforming Sturt from the easybeats to a very competitive team
He coached 1995-2001

Brenton Phillips took over and won a flag as a first year SANFL coach
Will history repeat with debutante coach ,  Marty Mattmagnificentter this season ?

Remarkable
That 3 first year coaches for Sturt have got teams into Grand Finals this early part of the century

Scrappy, are you sure the Eagles defeated West 3 times last year?

West won Round 2(?), Eagles won at City Mazda and Eagles won the 2nd Semi.

Apropos that, the Eagles and West played a trial game in December 2014 at Thebarton.

Who would have thought that was a Grand Final 'preview'.

Eagles won, so perhaps Scrappy will claim that as their 3rd win?

Sturt looked pretty impressive against Adelaide, who didn't look all that interested.

Should be a tight game, anyone can win.

And don't forget that John Halbert got them into a Grand Final in his first year as coach of Sturt in 1983.

Then again a number of first year coaches won wooden spoons with them between 1989 and 1996.

2002 REVISITED? (STURT’S LAST PREMIERSHIP)

When Sturt defeated Central, in that season they lost all 3 minor round games and the 2nd Semi Final to the Bulldogs before reversing the result in the Grand Final.

In 2002 Sturt lost 4 games in the minor round (16-4) as they have done in 2016 (13-4-1)

In 2002 Sturt finished the minor round 3rd, won the Qualifying Final, lost the Second Semi and won the Prelim (just as they have in 2016).

The Double Blues were coming off of a year when they didn't play finals (2001 6th 9-11) and had changed coaches in the off season (Phil Carman to Brenton Phillips)

Your kidding aren't you? They defend first with the press/choke for the turnover & when that happens, they run forward & usually use long kicks like Lewis, Jarrad etc to hit up the forwards & use them very well

As for the match I think it'll be very close & who has luck on the day will win, maybe the eagles by 2 points

Not to cause an argument but 2016 has been the year that Luke Jarrads Long kick out of defence and over the boundary has worked against the eagles.
It's more these days a lot of short kicks and hand balls .
Yes sometimes the long kick from the wing into the fifty but that is not what it used to be .
I've missed one game this year so unless the win over Glenelg at Woodville was different

I'm Hoping for a win

2015 GRAND FINAL
EG 2-0...5-3...7-5...7-6

All four coaches involved (Williams, Oatey, Godden and Mickan) have coached at West Adelaide?

Might be right about Mickan/Williams F10

The answer was this
Those games are the last Grand finals lost by Sturt[1965] and Eagles [2015] at the Adelaide Oval

Sorry to keep you guessing, you did come up with some good replies

I would be surprised if Mickan played under Fos. Mickan would have only been 16 when Fos ended his coaching career at West.

Best odds and lines around for both sides I can find are

EG $1-40 [Unitab]
ST $3-35 [Crownbet]

EG -18.5 [Sportsbet]
ST +20.5 [Crownbet and William Hill]

Sturt might be value ?

EG beaten ST three times this season
IF Sturt stay with EG early there is a potential for a drawn game at full time

If a draw , do they play extra time, and how long ?
