Re: SANFL Recovery Session
It is an interesting theory Flag No 9.
I do agree that when the play is on, the focus must be the play, quick stoppages or rapid kick ins from behinds can play havoc with that from time to time.
I often believe that for a radio call you are better to call about 1 to 2 seconds behind the play and get it right. This rather that trying to get ahead and then miss-call something.
Whilst you see the video highlights, on the day we are not calling for the video but a radio audience that often is nowhere near the ground and would prefer an accurate smooth call rather than a rushed corrective one.

It's more than a theory Phil. Have a listen to the call of the highlights from the Eagles v Central game on the Recovery Session. John Nankivell aside, it's dreadful. At one point one commentator is telling a story while a goal is scored, and he doesn't even bother to stop. And there are plenty of examples of the same thing in just that highlights package. Do they get any feedback on how frustrating this is for listeners, and how insulting it is to the players?PhilH wrote:It is an interesting theory Flag No 9.

Re: SANFL Recovery Session
I take the point.
Yes for radio when the play is on call the play. No issue there.
It is a TV thing especially Foxtel to do comments during play and it is creeping into SANFL radio.
I initially took your comments to be more around the speed of calling which I have explained and I don't think is your issue here.

I watched and listened to the Recovery Session as you suggested.
Two things stood out. One, how good is John Nankivell - precise, just the football, clear. Two - just how appalling the rest was, a gross disrespect to the listening audience. Sorry, but watch and listen and learn how not to do it.

Totally agree on the John Nankivell comment, Lee - In my opinion, he is the best SANFL commentator we have...Lee wrote:Two things stood out. You say the rest is ''appalling'' in your comments, above...
Did you mean the rest of the highlights from all of the other games?

miles ahead of most, very fortunate we have people like him and you calling sanfl, certainly keeps the standard well above the other callers

Definitely not, Phil, just the Eagles/Centrals game, where the game seemed to be secondary to the commentators' discussions on several occasions and calling goals seemed to be a catch up afterthought.
Appalling stuff.

Okay, no worries. Thanks for clarifying that, Lee...
Absolutely agree. I was talking to the guy that edits The Recovery Session Highlights today and he voiced his frustration at exactly what you guys have pointed out...
I'll pass on this feedback to John Nankivell, who calls every week with LifeFM, and hopefully he can give some feedback to the regular 'offenders'...

Thanks, The Hatchet...
I always love calling with people like CK and Nanks as I feel like I learn so much from them and I feel that my standard of calling is lifted when calling with these guys...
John Nankivell choses not to peruse the forums but I'll be sure to pass on the positive feedback, from both yourself and Lee, when I next speak to him...

And great to hear two former LifeFM colleagues working together again, in Grant Coffee and Doug Oakley...The Hatchet wrote:good to see the central v sturt game live vision streamed yesterday.

yes, two experienced callers who have been doing it for a long time, was good to hear in the live streaming situation. some games this year have had varying levels of quality.

Re: SANFL Recovery Session
Yes, because of the limited availability of callers for the streaming, when their first priority is the radio broadcast...The Hatchet wrote:Big Phil wrote:And great to hear two former LifeFM colleagues working together again, in Grant Coffee and Doug Oakley...The Hatchet wrote:good to see the central v sturt game live vision streamed yesterday.

Re: SANFL Recovery Session
yes, would be difficult in that way. seems to be hard at times with having enough callers some rounds, with some calling for multiple stations. at least it means we hear some good callers more and less of others.

Re: SANFL Recovery Session
South must have won by 100 points on the weekend. Only 1 bloods goal was shown from the entire game.

Re: SANFL Recovery Session
might have been a little confusing for listeners in the central v glenelg game, with opposing forward players with milera as a surname, and most goals not making it clear which milera had kicked it.
