Not Seriously SANFL
Sturt are tweeting occasional quotes from football people that are really funny.
I'll start to post some of them and catch up on some past tweets.
Here's today's offering:
Any time Carlton scores more than 100 points and holds the other team below 100 points they almost always win" Lou Richards

You know I had to read that twice, just to make sure I got it right.

Another one from Sturt.
when Richo asked if he could put it in percentages he said 'Yes I can, it's a third'

The problem we've been faced with for too long in footy is media, coaches, etc, have tried to pretend the game is far more complicated than it really is ... (keeps them in a job). It makes them susceptible to "well ... duh" comments as they attempt to analyse the bleeding obvious.
I always love comments such as, "Franklin has 3 goals, if he kicks this he'll have 4" ... commentators showing off again

That was also part of Kym Hodgeman's 1978 Magarey Medal speech, "I'd like to thank my parents, especially mum and dad".

That is just the commentator catering for those who may have just tuned into the game and not knowing who has kicked what...Adelaide Hawk wrote:I always love comments such as, "Franklin has 3 goals, if he kicks this he'll have 4" ... commentators showing off again

Re: Not Seriously SANFL
most if not every commentator have said (this example) over the years ''South leads 5 goals 3. 33 to Sturt 3 straight points''.....i ask how can points be straight ? i would suggest maybe saying ''3 solitary points'' or ''only 3 points in a row''

Michael Malthouse at half time of the 2008 AFL GF said "if Geelong could make more of their chances, they'd be even further in front".
Trouble is Mick, they were trailing by 3 points at the time

They're just making allowances for people who aren't aware that 4 comes after 3

I realise that when it comes to numbers and calculations I'm probably above average, but it never ceases to amaze me how often a commentator is incapable of calculating a score or the margin of a game. They will say things like "I can't see the board, but South are 2 goals 1 behind, I think that's 15 points", or "Glenelg 84 leads Port 67, a margin of 27 points", etc. We should make desk calculators standard issue for commentators.

I don't recall Jarman's speech. I was still in shock Aish didn't win it

Re: Not Seriously SANFL
I remember when they first started playing games back at Thebe the first scoreboard didnt have room for totals.... and it was electronic meaning it would flash some sponsors message after each goal and you would lose the score exactly when you wanted to say it.
I have never used a calculator to work out a socre (I have for percentages for a ladder) ... i think by the time you use it that is too slow in radio terms.

Aish wasn't favourite the year Jarman won the medal. Every media award that year was won by either Jarman or Darel Hart and they were just about equal favourites. I think that you are confusing yourself with 1983 when Aish was a red hot favourite.
