What a surprise. A Saturday match at the same time as the Crows A team. ABC must still be the telecaster. Hope the Crows and Power extra players like twiddling their thumbs for the first couple of weeks of the AFL season!

No, I don't think they will be doing the SANFL next year, pretty sure it will be Channel 7...spell_check wrote:A Saturday match... ABC must still be the telecaster.
Unless eartotheground can shed any further light or knows more?

Re: 2014 Draw
That is a great first round fixture list, with each and every match giving their respective supporters reason to get excited!
Reigning premier Norwood takes on a strengthened traditional rival in Port first up under lights, Glenelg and Sturt would each feel a good chance for a first up win, Eagles and Centrals will see how vastly modified squads shape up against each other, South and West with similar personnel and coaching changes leaving us guessing the outcome, and last year's runner's up North taking on an unknown quantity in the Crows.
Despite the turmoil that has found its way to the SANFL this year, I still love my local footy and the excitement it brings. Looking forward to suporting my team again in 2014, despite many unresolved question marks over the new era which we now find ourselves in.

It would have been far more sensible for the match to have been played at Elizabeth under lights on Saturday...no opposition to any Crows or Power match. Going on past figures an attendance of 3500-4000 would be likely. Instead we will struggle to 2000 with all the hype on the same day for the Crows first official "home" match at Adelaide Stadium. Other than that, everyone else will have good attendances.

Re: 2014 Draw
Have to agree the decision to play that game on the Saturday is just madness - particularly as I suspect we no longer need a sacrificial lamb for TV on a Saturday. No disrespect to the Eagles, but they struggle to attract reasonable home crowds at the best of times without being up against a Crows match at Adelaide Oval.spell_check wrote:It would have been far more sensible for the match to have been played at Elizabeth under lights on Saturday...no opposition to any Crows or Power match. The draw has to be ratified by the SANFL, and hopefully common sense prevails and the game ends up being on the Sunday. Will double the crowd at Maughan Thiem Oval doing that I reckon.

i believe at least one of the ''new franchises'' will be playing on Anzac Day, i would presume Norwood v North will be played on the same day as well

Re: 2014 Draw
As long as Norwood v North play on ANZAC Day that's the important thing. Other matches have been played on the day in recent years (there was even a full round in 2009 - albeit that was a Saturday), but the focus needs to remain on the Grand Final rematch regardless of who else plays on the day.bayman wrote:i believe at least one of the ''new franchises'' will be playing on Anzac Day, i would presume Norwood v North will be played on the same day as well

Last years programme was printed in the advertiser on the 19th of December (a double page spread), so it must be very close to being released.

"No disrespect to the Eagles, but they struggle to attract reasonable home crowds at the best of times "
For the record
- Eagles have had an increase in home crowds 4 of the past 5 seasons
- In 2012, we had the 4th highest home crowds in the league
- In 2013, that was 6th
Both years we had higher home crowds that Central, West & South.
In 2012 we also had higher home crowds than North & Sturt.

Think you are right, South play West in the Southern Suburbs, Eagles play Central in the North, good local footy for everyone to enjoy and likely a good attendance by both, let the cows play the smears on the Saturday afternoon.

Re: 2014 Draw
I noticed that Central and Norwood kick off at 12:10pm in their Round 2 clash !!!
That will be the TV game that week, I would suspect...
Interesting to see Norwood v Central back at The Parade on a Friday night in Round 12...

West look like being the night owls of the competition. 9 night games and that's without the last 2 rounds being set.

Re: 2014 Draw
I'm not into night footy. (Just an old age thing of course.) So I'm glad I'm a Sturt supporter, where all our home games are on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. And will presumably remain so, for as long as I'm still around. We're fighting an uphill battle with the council, just trying to get our training lights upgraded a bit, so our players don't have to wear head-lamps to train in.

I see the reserves, u/18s start a week earlier because of the Crows. Also All 4 Grades play on the same day at the same ground when West play South in round 1.
