Improving the SANFL
Just want to leave this thread open for people to express their desires/ideas/wishes for the SANFL to improve itself for the long run.
One thing I'd like to see is an improvement in the streaming of games live. I dislike how low qualiity the streaming on SANFLNow is, why can't we invest in getting better equipement for HD streaming of the game, sound improvement, etc.
Could the SANFL secure a major partnership with Fox?
What do you think about ARC and/or score review being implemented?
Do you think there is room for the SANFL to expand to a few more clubs or are we at the sweet spot when it comes to the number of teams competing?

I'm not sure that people realise improvements can be had with the devices you are viewing the SANFL Now stream from.Mighty Panther wrote:One thing I'd like to see is an improvement in the streaming of games live. I watch it on my phone, iPad and watch via my Smart TV app and have NO PROBLEMS at all.
The equipment being used at present is more than ample. If there was a magic pool of money the provider could upgrade to commercial television level but not sure people realise how expensive this is.
Why would they when there is Channel 7. Fox wouldn't be interested. Look at Foxtel Cup !!!Mighty Panther wrote:Could the SANFL secure a major partnership with Fox?

Re: Improving the SANFL
Phil, has any thought been given to having commentary with the REserves games?
It doesn't have to be ball-by-ball, just thoughts and comments, anything is better than just crowd noise.

There wouldn’t be enough commentators to cover it all, unless they double up on the day

Re: Improving the SANFL
Other than Live stream matters, and this is fanciful notion, but I would just like everyone to leave the sanfl alone, which may not improve it, but not diminish it either.
I note a raft of concessions Port and Crows have obtained re their playing lists, due to their constant whinging to the sanfl. IMO all of these little afl-led tweaks diminish the sanfl.

Yeah, bayman would be correct, in part.
League and Under 18's are where the SANFL wants to focus commentary....

Re: Improving the SANFL
I,m sure there are many who'd love to commentate Ressies St no cost.
Doesn't have to be running commentary, just soevial comments and giving some context for viewers.
Otherwise it's close to a waste of time.

Filming of games was, has and will always be for the purpose of a coaching resource.
The commentary is an after product, of which Digital Pass and SANFL Now have derived from.
Having some special comments coming in and out would be more of a waste of time, in my opinion.
People can get context from following the game via the live scores on the app as well. Gives plenty of context.

Re: Improving the SANFL
So you're saying it's not for the viewing public, they can get lost?
Perhaps they shouldn't advertise it then.
SANFL - respecting their competition.

Re: Improving the SANFL
Now the women have moved their competition dates from summer - why not a 3 game, plus final, competition run over 6-8 weeks in Jan/Feb?
Friday nights at Norwood Oval and Saturday nights at Richmond. 12 minute quarters plus time-on.
Split the 8 SANFL clubs in to two groups of 4 where they play each member of their group once and the top teams of each group play off for the Gina Reinhardt Cup.

Not saying that, at all.
But when it comes to prioritising that games get called, the Ressies at the bottom of the pile.

It's not a question of priorities, Phil.
It's called lazily disrespecting your audience and your competition by the SANFL.

No it's not, Lee.
It's called not having the resources and sensibly directing the available ones to where the demand audience would be.
The League and Under 18's would be more important than Reserves when it comes to commentary.
I can assure you, there would be way more people watching U18's than Reserves.

Re: Improving the SANFL
Has the SANFL ever asked if there were people willing to do this, Phil?
How do you know there are no resources if you haven't asked?
And it begs the obvious question - why do you think fewer people watch the Reserves? Perhaps because there's no commentary so it's a waste of time?.

Yes. How do the you think the next crop of callers, like Bayman's son, have had their opportunity.
Because the numbers haven't been there. And apart from players family and direct friends, the audience capture isn't the same for Reserves, pure and simple.
Talent Scouts, family, friends, opposition etc watch the under 18's more than they watch the reserves, based on the numbers I have seen.

Re: Improving the SANFL
What you're saying, Phil, is that the Reserves aren't worth watching.
I'd hope you took the wider view instead of the SANFL view.
My first two questions still stand, mate.

I haven't taken the SANFL view. It's my view, from the facts that I am aware of.
And I answered your other questions, Lee. I don't need to do it again.
Tell me where I said they aren't worth watching. Please don't put words in my mouth.
If the resources aren't available, or don't come forward, then not every grade can be covered. Simple.

Maybe this might be an answer to Lee's question.
That being said, the funding might not be there for 2 x callers to be paid for 2 games in a day.
Who knows what 2023 brings, but if the SANFL do ask for my thoughts on improvements, I'll be sure to suggest Ressies commentary.

Once upon a time they telecasted the reserves on a Saturday morning & at halftime actually showed the replay of the mini league from the week before, however sadly those times are well and truly behind us

Re: Improving the SANFL
Dollars yes, but it is also an evolution of focus on sanfl football generally.
Everything is now AFL-centric and our sanfl heritage, tradition and present existence is consigned to the background.
I am sure if the sanfl was to the average footy follower, what is was 35-40 years ago (pre-Crows), the Reserves might still be on TV in the morning and be more relevant to those people.
Whether the sanfl cares about the reserves much I don't know. Sometimes I wonder if they interested in the health of the league competition too.

I lost faith in the SANFL caring about the competition when a young West Adelaide star wasn't allowed to play league footy on the Saturday because the U18s State squad had an internal trial a few days later.

would that be the sanfl not caring or the afl telling them not to care, because they don't care ?
