The following week the SANFL tigers were defeated

There was great controversy when Glenelg selected star Richmond forward Royce Hart
Royce Hart was concussed early in this match , recovered and showed why he is considered one of the greatest players ever , by playing a good game

There was mixed feeling about his selection for Glenelg
Royce Hart was paid $2,000 to play
He had trained with Glenelg during the season , but was picked to debut for the club in the GF
That meant one Glenelg player had to make way for his selection

What is quite bizarre is that had Glenelg not selected Royce Hart, then he could have played for Sturt on that Grand Final day
Glenelg raised the cash to entice Royce Hart
Was this is true or not,  Sturt was going to pay and play Royce Hart as well ?

being on National Service if you were stationed in another state you could play for any team you wanted without a transfer fee, as i understand it (from a hazy memory) that yes Glenelg paid Royce Hart to play & Darrell Moss was the unlucky player.......on the ''Tigers of old'' dvd Fred Phillis said (paraphrasing) ''that Royce was obviously a much better player than Darrell but i could read Darrell & knew when to lead & how he would kick it, with Royce i wasn't sure & this caused hesitation as to when to go'' as for Sturt paying well i think Neil Kerley said on the same dvd (again paraphrasing) ''that we weren't going to let Sturt get him because they knew they were sniffing around''

A fairly easy goal late in the last quarter when Glenelg were a handy 10 points in front could have sealed the game for Glenelg, but Port swept them aside in the last stages of the game
Glenelg died on their run but it was a glorious opening marred only the locale.

The journalists of the times were rather scathing of this match being played at the Ponderosa

Heres what one had to say :
The SANFL is $5000 down the drain already after the opening round of the league series
That is what they lost by staging the PA V GL match at Elizabeth last Saturday instead of a closer home venue
Just over 10,000 people made the 17 miles northerly trip from the city to see last years preliminary finalists play on the neutral ground
It was all right for the PA barrackers who probably made up 8,000 of the total attendance
It is easy for them to slip up Grand Junction Road and be at Elizabeth quickly
But for Glenelg barrackers it meant a 50 miles round trip as they are 7-10 miles south of Adelaide
Even a well heeled racehorse owner, who is a dyed in the wool GL supPORTer and a club vice president, refused to make the trip

Heres another report on the venue :
The SANFL still has many problems to overcome before Elizabeth Oval could be considered a possible future headquarters for the League
First and probably major problem is the traffic congestion as occurred after the GL/PA game at Elizabeth Oval last saturday
For most people the 17 mile drive back to Adelaide took about an hour
Bumper to bumper traffic for such a trip is no joke
The congestion had not occurred to such an extent before as CD have always been one of the two teams playing at Elizabeth and their supPORTers live in the district and havent had to make the trek back to the city
The crowd of 10,164 was down a few thousand on what it would have been had the game been played at Alberton or Glenelg
I believe Elizabeth is too BIG
Most suburban grounds are pretty much the same size, but Elizabeths wide open spaces take some getting used to
Another difficulty for players is the strong winds which always seem to blow all over the ground, whatever the weather
Wind breaks, especially at the Northern end , would help reduce the wind


The Cahill brothers played well

JOHN CAHILL
Typically it was Ports never say die attitude and stamina which got them to the front only in the last 15 minutes
Just as typically it was a great burst by their skipper John Cahill , which helped them along the road
Cahill and PA supremacy are synominous
He may have lost a yard of pace but Cahill has lost none of his BIG heart and fantastic ability to get through where other men fear to tred and do the best with the ball

DARRELL CAHILL
Darrell Cahill has played most of his football- which is only 24 games- as a half back
Whoever got the notion to try him as a rover is a genius , as he has clicked in that position all this season in trials and matches against Victorian clubs

Still cant find out why this match was played at the Ponderosa
That they had traffic jams way back  in 1971 was interesting

This game was played at Elizabeth Oval as Adelaide oval was being used to host Claxton Shield baseball games that weekend - the teams then played at Glenelg and Alberton later on during the season. I've never understood why the round 1 match simply wasn't played at one of the home grounds with one of the later clashes then played at Adelaide Oval.
Also the 1971 Prelim Final was between Port and Centrals NOT Port and Glenelg.

Buggsy also on the ball , why not play that RD1 match at Glenelg/Alberton , and play an Adelaide oval game later in the season

i have been advised by someone who was at the game that there was a strong wind favouring the end to which Port were kicking. Port kicked six goals after the 18 minute mark of the last quarter so the goals only made the scoreboard look respectable. The 6 goals were the ultimate in junk time goals.

According to my informant he says that the remarkable thing about the late goals is that in the second semi final at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter Port led by 21 points and from then until the final siren North kicked 7 goals to 1 to win by 15 points. He also says that Barrie Robran played one of the greatest 15 minutes of football ever seen in that second semi final to virtually turn the game singlehandedly. I wish there was some vision of that game.

I can remember watching a replay of the 1971 1st Semi and right near the end one of the commentators, it may have been Ian Aitken, saying that this was the end of an era (Sturt's) and the beginning of a new one (Central's). It sounded very profound at the time, particularly to a 10 year-old who had only known Sturt as premiers.

North were traditionally the third best side of the 20th century behind Port and Norwood. They were the only team to win a premiership in their own right in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. What they never had was a dynasty.

As well as the early 1900s to which Scrappy referred they also played in 3 Grand Finals in a row in 1930, 1931 and 1932 for two flags and a runners up. Between 1949 and 1952 under the great Ken Farmer they won 2 flags and were runner up once. And between 1985 and 1991 they played in five Grand Finals for two flags.

The other two things worth noting was through the 20th century they only won three wooden spoons - 1912, 1978 and 1999. They have already matched that this century. And also throughout the 20th century they vied with Port for having won the most Magarey Medals.

This is easily North's bleakest era.

The ball was kicked in from the point, and the siren went a second or two later after the kick in
