Re: SANFL 1960-1999
Sturt was a brilliant team in the 1960s
That form transcended to a lesser extent in the 1970s
They played 4 Champions of Australia games of the times
These games from 1968-1975 had the SANFL + VFL premiers play each other
All matches were played in Adelaide
1968
ST 6-20
CA 13-15
1969
ST 9-10
RI 15-27
1970
ST 12-22
CA 21-13
1971
NA 10-7
HW 13-13
1972
NA 10-13
CA 10-12
1973
RI 12-20
SUBIACO 10-19
1974
ST 13-17
RI 27-11
1975
NW 5-11
NM 17-15
Some questions I want to know about
What happened in 1973 , why did Subiaco play Richmond, and not Glenelg the 1973 SANFL Premiers ?
The glamour team of the times, Sturt were thrashed by 37-53-45-78 points in their 4 matches
Were they not good enough, or were their other reasons ?
Why were all these games played in Adelaide ?

Re: SANFL 1960-1999
I can remember Glenelg playing Richmond at around that time and we were outraged as we had to change our jumper. Richmond played in their black and gold strip and we had to use a training jumper from memory. We lost but I can't remember the margin. I thought that was the Champion of Australia game but it is a few years and many beers ago so I could be wrong.

Your memory is correct. In 1973 Glenelg played Richmond on the Saturday and Subiaco played the Tasmanian premiers. The two winners played off on the Monday. Glenelg only lost to Richmond by 15 points or thereabouts, although Glenelg did kick a number of what now would be referred to as "junk time" goals. Richmond kicked a number of goals in a hurry I think just before half time to virtually put the game out of Glenelg's reach but the Bays fought on well.UncleHuey wrote:I can remember Glenelg playing Richmond at around that time and we were outraged as we had to change our jumper. Subiaco actually pushed Richmond on the Monday as evidenced by the scores.
An interesting aside is that 1973 was Glenelg's first premiership for 39 years and Subiaco's first premiership for 49 years.

while not an Australian championship match Glenelg did play Richmond again in 1974 or 1975 at Footy Park & this time Glenelg wore its jumper & Richmond wore (from memory) a red & yellow striped jumper & Glenelg won this time, i have no idea as to the scores or margin but i remember reading the truth newspaper after looking at page 3 for a fair while & reading that Richmond was struggling not only in the VFL but have now been beaten by Glenelg............if someone knows the score that would be nice & also if there is any hope of getting that story up, thank you

That Glenelg/Richmond game at Footy Park was in 1976 as part of the initial NFL Comp contested by 12 teams from Vic, WA and SA. Most of these games were played on Tuesday nights at Norwood Oval (eg Port def Footscray and Norwood thrashed Carlton by 100 pts) but a few games (Sturt def West Perth and Glenelg def Richmond) were daytime games at Football Park on public holidays. Against Glenelg in 76 I was at the game and Richmond wore some horrible multi coloured outfit that no doubt provided inspiration for some of Hawthorn's guernseys 30-40 years later !

18-6 Freddy Phillis
11-13 Central Districts
Same amount of scoring shots by Fred and Centrals
But Big Fred won by 35 points
Did Fred wear his yellow boots that day ?
Has any other SANFL player beaten a team by himself by more than 35 points ?
It has been reported
41 minutes and 34 seconds of time on was played in this match
Would that be the most time on played in an SANFL game?
Perhaps in a game with injuries that 41:34 might have been exceeded?
This was the first time an SANFL team aggregated 300+ points in a SANFL match
Phillis is at least equal 8th for margin by one player; the 2nd highest is 49 pts, by Grant Coffee 13.8 vs Sturt 5.7 Rd 1 1993
Under the old time on rule (eg. 25 minute quarters) I'd say not, but now with 20 minute quarters, a match would only have to average 30 minutes and 24 seconds per quarter to beat that.

BIG FRED
There were at least 2 BIG Freds in South Australia
One terrorised beach goers
The other a great goalkicker
Fred Phillis
Have a LOOK at the goal he kicks at about 2:25 minutes in

Re: SANFL 1960-1999
NA V PA
Round 2, April 1993
Prospect Oval
NA...2-4...5-8...7-15..10.16
PA...1-3...4-7...5-8....18-10
This was Norths first game of 1993, having a bye in round 1
It was the 100 year Centenary game
Norths Harold Hawke, perhaps the greatest footballer from Curramulka ,Yorke Peninsula tossed the coin
Ports Bob Quinn was on the oval with Hawke for the coin toss
Quinn won 2 medals 1938 + 1946
Hawke won a medal in 1937
The 1937 medal was more than interesting
Hawke polled 37 votes , Quinn polled 36 votes as the runner up
In 1937 the medal counting was different , that season votes were counted as :
5 best
3 2nd best
1 3rd best
Had the votes been the more traditional 3-2-1 the result it is said it
would have ended as :
Quinn 24
Hawke 23
So Bob Quinn can be considered a bit unlucky not have won a 3rd medal
There were no medals 1941-1944, perhaps Quinn may have won another medal
Quinn did win a Military Medal for his war service effort in WW2
Bob Quinn must have been one hec of a player
It was Daryl Harts first game as NA coach ?
Johnny Cahill Ports coach
Mick Redden, wearing a knee brace and Greg Phillips captained their teams
Both greats, both 300+ players at the time
As for the game, the scores are not a misprint
NA led by 19 points at 3/4 time, yet lost by 42 points
PA scored 13-2 to 3-1 in the last quarter
NA recovered somewhat after this match
By Round 10 they were 5 wins - 3 losses - 2 byes
But they didnt do well after that , only winning 1 more game
Anyone attend this centenary game ?
I ave 2 imPORTant asks :
Would be interesting to find out what happened in that last quarter
Would also be interesting to find out if there was BBQ back then as good as the BBQ of recent times

Re: SANFL 1960-1999
I was there Scrappy. It was held on Easter Saturday 1993. What happened is that for 3 quarters Mick Redden at 36 years of age and with chronic bad knees dominated but he tired, the Port rucks smashed North in the last quarter and the rest is as they say is history.
A couple of points about Dribbler Hawke and Bob Quinn who were great friends. Dribbler was actually from North's local area but after debuting for North in 1927 he got a job working on a farm in Curramulka and subsequently bought a property over there. Likewise Bob Quinn bought a pub at Kadina and lived there for a long time. Geelong champion Reg Hickey said that Dribbler Hawke was the greatest Centre Half Forward he had ever seen.
Bob McLean was adamant that Bob Quinn was the best player ever to play at Port Adelaide.
One thing that really impressed me that day was that AFL chief Ross Oakley was invited to the match and attended the game as well as the pre and post match functions.
I couldn't imagine any senior AFL official attending any SANFL home and away game these days.
The Bays have their centenary coming up in a few years. They should invite Gillon McLachlan and see if he would come to the game. I doubt it.

I was there too and I concur with everything RR says.
I am surprised that you rate the North bbq Scrappy. I haven't eaten from there in 25 years. It used to be very ordinary and the service was appallingly slow. It must have improved if a gourmand, correction gourmet, such as yourself rates it.

1984
Round 14
South Adelaide v Woodville
Football Park
SA..9-3...20-8...29-14...39-16[250]
WV.2-3....6-5.....8-10...19-14 [128]
What a last quarter by the Woodpeckers
Scored 11-4 and still lost by 122 points !
I just wonder if South had any opportunities to score 40 goals for the game ?
NORWOOD + NORTH ADELAIDE MINOR ROUND FINISH 1984
NW 13-9 [50.67%]...........2407 FOR......2343 AGAINST
NA 6-16 [50-07%].......... 2397 FOR.... .2390 AGAINST
Very similar percentages despite Norwood winning 7 more games
Norwood came from 5th to win the flag
North finished 8th
In the last game of the year
NW 18-13 [121]
SA 8-7 [55]
CD 22-17 [149]
NA 16-11 [107]
So in fact NA had a better minor round % then the eventual premier with 1 round to go

In the first game, did all the defenders close their eyes and use the force to go for the ball?
21 goals in a quarter? Nearly a goal a minute. Although with time on it probably went 40 minutes.

talking about goals per minute & while not in this era, didn't Central kicked a mammoth last quarter score against North at Prospect in the 2000's to turn a 3/4 time deficit into a huge win ? i'm sure BP will know for sure

There was this match Bayman, when CD had a BIG last qtr against NA
RD1
2003
North Adelaide v Central Districts
NA...2-1....7-4.....9-7...11-8 [74]
CD...6-1...11-4....16-5..32.5 [197]
The irony of this win was NA scored more behinds and still lost by 123 points
NA had more draws than wins in 2003
They drew with SA + NW
Only win for the season was against PA
NA vastly improved in 2004 winning 12 minor round games and a final against WA
In the early 2000s CD had several BIG last qtrs against NA
RD 3
1996
Centrals v North Adelaide
Ponderosa Oval
Was it this game Bayman ?
CD ...3-1...5-5...8-5...16-9[105]
NA...6-1...9-3...15-5...16-5 101]
I was at Adelaide Oval that day watching this game
ST beat WA
ST 12-13 [85]
WA 11-12 [78]
It was Sturts first winning game for a long time, having been winless in 1995
NA were 42 points up at 3/4 time and lost
Im pretty sure by the commentary that day, that CD came home with a very strong breeze

I was thinking of a 30 plus goal score so it was the top one you posted, my recollection was they came from behind, obviously not right so perhaps they were behind in line betting & smashed past it in the last term..was definitely at Prospect, thanks BP

1997 SANFL GRAND FINAL
PA 7-11
NW 19-12
Stephen Rowe had this to say about that game at a function
It went something like this , about a spectacular mark in the last quarter
*I was so high up when I took that mark, one of the best things about that mark was as I was coming down I could see Port Adelaide barrackers leaving the ground.*
