Sturt was a brilliant team in the 1960s
That form transcended to a lesser extent in the 1970s

They played 4 Champions of Australia games of the times
These games from 1968-1975 had the SANFL + VFL premiers play each other
All matches were played in Adelaide

Some questions I want to know about

What happened in 1973 , why did Subiaco play Richmond, and not Glenelg the 1973 SANFL Premiers ?

The glamour team of the times, Sturt were thrashed by 37-53-45-78 points in their 4 matches
Were they not good enough, or were their other reasons ?

Why were all these games played in Adelaide ?

I can remember Glenelg playing Richmond at around that time and we were outraged as we had to change our jumper. Richmond played in their black and gold strip and we had to use a training jumper from memory. We lost but I can't remember the margin. I thought that was the Champion of Australia game but it is a few years and many beers ago so I could be wrong.

Your memory is correct. In 1973 Glenelg played Richmond on the Saturday and Subiaco played the Tasmanian premiers. The two winners played off on the Monday. Glenelg only lost to Richmond by 15 points or thereabouts, although Glenelg did kick a number of what now would be referred to as "junk time" goals. Richmond kicked a number of goals in a hurry I think just before half time to virtually put the game out of Glenelg's reach but the Bays fought on well.

Subiaco actually pushed Richmond on the Monday as evidenced by the scores.

An interesting aside is that 1973 was Glenelg's first premiership for 39 years and Subiaco's first premiership for 49 years.

That Glenelg/Richmond game at Footy Park was in 1976 as part of the initial NFL Comp contested by 12 teams from Vic, WA and SA. Most of these games were played on Tuesday nights at Norwood Oval (eg Port def Footscray and Norwood thrashed Carlton by 100 pts) but a few games (Sturt def West Perth and Glenelg def Richmond) were daytime games at Football Park on public holidays. Against Glenelg in 76 I was at the game and Richmond wore some horrible multi coloured outfit that no doubt provided inspiration for some of Hawthorn's guernseys 30-40 years later !

Perhaps in a game with injuries that 41:34 might have been exceeded?

This was the first time an SANFL team aggregated 300+ points in a SANFL match

Phillis is at least equal 8th for margin by one player; the 2nd highest is 49 pts, by Grant Coffee 13.8 vs Sturt 5.7 Rd 1 1993

Under the old time on rule (eg. 25 minute quarters) I'd say not, but now with 20 minute quarters, a match would only have to average 30 minutes and 24 seconds per quarter to beat that.

It was the 100 year Centenary game
Norths Harold Hawke, perhaps the greatest footballer from Curramulka ,Yorke Peninsula tossed the coin
Ports Bob Quinn was on the oval with Hawke for the coin toss

Quinn won 2 medals 1938 + 1946
Hawke won a medal in 1937
The 1937 medal was more than interesting
Hawke polled 37 votes , Quinn polled 36 votes as the runner up
In 1937 the medal counting was different , that season votes were counted as :
5 best
3 2nd best
1 3rd best
Had the votes been the more traditional 3-2-1 the result it is said it
would have ended as :

So Bob Quinn can be considered a bit unlucky not have won a 3rd medal
There were no medals 1941-1944, perhaps Quinn may have won another medal

NA led by 19 points at 3/4 time, yet lost by 42 points
PA scored 13-2 to 3-1 in the last quarter

NA recovered somewhat after this match
By Round 10 they were 5 wins - 3 losses - 2 byes
But they didnt do well after that , only winning 1 more game

I  was there Scrappy. It was held on Easter Saturday 1993. What happened is that for 3 quarters Mick Redden at 36 years of age and with chronic bad knees dominated but he tired, the Port rucks smashed North in the last quarter and the rest is as they say is history.
A couple of points about Dribbler Hawke and Bob Quinn who were great friends. Dribbler was actually from North's local area but after debuting for North in 1927 he got a job working on a farm in Curramulka and subsequently bought a property over there. Likewise Bob Quinn bought a pub at Kadina and lived there for a long time. Geelong champion Reg Hickey said that Dribbler Hawke was the greatest Centre Half Forward he had ever seen.
Bob McLean was adamant that Bob Quinn was the best player ever to play at Port Adelaide.
One thing that really impressed me that day was that AFL chief Ross Oakley was invited to the match and attended the game as well as the pre and post match functions.
I couldn't imagine any senior AFL official attending any SANFL home and away game these days.
The Bays have their centenary coming up in a few years. They should invite Gillon McLachlan and see if he would come to the game. I doubt it.

I am surprised that you rate the North bbq Scrappy. I haven't eaten from there in 25 years. It used to be very ordinary and the service was appallingly slow. It must have improved if a gourmand, correction gourmet, such as yourself rates it.

talking about goals per minute & while not in this era, didn't Central kicked a mammoth last quarter score against North at Prospect in the 2000's to turn a 3/4 time deficit into a huge win ? i'm sure BP will know for sure
