West Adelaide is set to unveil star recruits Zac O’Brien and Trent Stubbs in Friday night’s trial match against Norwood at City Mazda Stadium.

The Bloods have split their senior squad into two teams, which will each play half of the six-term contest under lights from 6.30pm.

Former Brisbane Lion O’Brien and ex-Collingwood rookie Stubbs have been named in the Second Half side which also features captain Chris Schmidt and star on-baller Travis Tuck.

‘’We’re really excited to see Zac O’Brien and Trent Stubbs play as they have been training really well on the track,’’ West football manager Andrew Marks said.

Twin brothers Lachie and Josh Ryan will also don the red and black for the first time while two 17-year-olds – Alex Stidiford and Josh Smithson – will also test themselves against mature bodies.

Sudanese utility Chol Majok – who played for Flagstaff Hill in the Southern Football League last year – will line up in the First Half side alongside star veteran Jason Porplyzia.

‘’Jason is looking really good, he’s had no issues at all during the pre-season which is great,’’ Marks said.

Several Bloods will be rested for the early hit-out including experienced defender Daniel Caire and key forwards Daniel Webb and Justin Hardy.

Premiership pair Aaron Fielke (hip) and Adam Hartlett (knee) are also being nursed back to peak fitness after undergoing off-season surgery.

‘’It will be great to see all of our new players and to just get a gauge on everyone’s fitness levels,’’ Marks said.

‘’We can also put into practice our set plays and kick-ins to see how that is progressing.’’

Entry to the match is free with barbecue and drink facilities also available.

For the record, West won both trials tonight.

Results irrelevant of course.

For West, Stubbs was excellent, the 2 new ruckmen were great and a host of youngsters impressed.

Perhaps rather than individual performances, as both teams had a lot of regulars missing, was the styles of play.

West were perhaps a bit quicker and took the game on, while Norwood seemed to play their usual style.

Both sides would have learned a bit from the night.

Despite having quality personnel I have doubts over how far Norwood can progress this season if they adhere to the same style as 2015 (and I don't say that on the back of a trial game). Wouldnt suggest a complete overhaul, but I think they certainly need some tweaks. If they are to rely solely on better execution, I'm not sure that would suffice.

Interesting Scrunch, I had the same comment made to me by a Westies fan who saw Friday's trial.
But if guys like Cachia, Fuller, Bartlett and Johnston are back to their best, it will be very interesting to see how that style, played as well as it can be, goes against the more attacking but vulnerable style that a team like West uses.

well hope the interchange Cap will open up the games again and see two or three players in the forward line and not all up across the center of the ground. Let's hope so

given that West played Woodville West Torrens in two early bird trials & then played off in the grand final in 2015 will clubs follow suit if West play Norwood in the grand final this season ?

I think a lot of teams eventually found themselves able to implement aspects of the Bassett system, but the Eagles and West took it an extra step last year by moving the ball quickly when they managed to break out of defence. Conversely Norwood slowed down and found the opposition very damaging, when Norwood turned the ball over, or were eventually forced to kick long to a crowded forward line. Norwood should be capable of improving their foot disposal, but if they take an eternity to transition, they could run into exactly the same problems as 2015. All ifs and buts at this stage I suppose, but I think what West brought to the table last season was a win for football in general.

i think the major difference for us is that we generally don't play the extra man in defence. It leaves us more vulnerable to a turnover but helps our more attacking style. It's quite similar to Kerley's philosophy (not surprisingly) in that although we want to be as effective defensively as possible, we back ourselves to kick more goals than the oppisition.

Here now at Thebby for North v Norwood...

I think it is the 2nd term, with Norwood leading North...

NWD - 5.6 (36)

NAD - 3.3 (21)

Lewis Johnston has kicked 3, I think, against his old side...

Jaryd Cachia found himself reported for what looked to be a nasty head high hit on Alex Spina...

3/4 Time at Thebby:

NAD - 6.10 (46)

NWD - 6.9 (45)

North looked good that term, moving the ball well...

Should be further in front, Mitch Harvey has the kicking yips, missing a couple of very easy set shots...

no scoreboard or siren at footy park, i heard someone say 9.11 to 4.6 in Sturts favour, i thought i counted (in my head) 10-5 in Sturts' favour with Sturt having a lot more points as well, the trial was conducted as two three quarter matches & both teams were a bit scrappy but in a trial this is to be expected

Could have reduced that game to four quarters and played at night if the lights are up to standard at Elizabeth? same could be said for the trial at Noarlunga

Elizabeth trial match to start at 11.30 played over 6 quarters confirmed via club email.

Would have thought night trial would be better for players and may have encouraged people to attend.

The lights at Eizabeth must be fine for a trial game...

Central play South, on a Friday night at MMH Oval, in the last week of trial games...
