South Adelaide terminates services of Nick Murphy

The Executive of the South Adelaide Football Club convened an extra ordinary meeting on Tuesday night (16th June 2015) to be briefed on circumstances that had recently come to light regarding co-captain Nick Murphy’s failure to meet his obligations to the club and senior coach Brad Gotch.

It is the club’s view that on a number of occasions over a period of time Nick has shown poor judgement and has not met the minimum standards required of the club.

Nick was immediately summoned to a meeting with Chairman Andrew Luckhurst-Smith and Senior Coach Brad Gotch last night whereby his services were terminated with immediate effect.

There will be no further statement by the club.

Complete surprise to me, no mail at all on this one!

Very surprised indeed, i know there was a problem on one particular day during pre season when Ron Fuller was in charge but that was 3 or 4 years ago, if it was up to me i'd have him at the bay

I think has had some issues with off-field discipline in the past...

Heard he was close to signing with Norwood a few years back...

Don't be surprised if he ends up playing for North Adelaide, now...

I am like you guys tonight. Pretty shocked but know our coach has very high standards on players to adhere to team rules "on and off" the field.

I would presume there would be good reasons behind this decision that we all will probably never know.

Might wake up the team a bit and send out a very strong message to the playing group.

Has this ever happened before in the SANFL? Can anyone rememember a SANFL club sacking its captain (i.e. from the club) mid-season?

Was Rick Davies Captain at Sturt when he left Sturt?

i don't know if it is a related story or not but i had the tv on at work & during the news it said an sanfl player being charged......i didn't hear what the charges were

Charged over alleged sexual assault... didn't hear whether the player was named.

Same story or do we have two scandals on our hands?

Only mentioned that the player in question is a "high-profile" player

I think "high prominent" was the actual words they used from memory, though.

He got Charged with Rape. Faced court today and he pleaded not Guillty

has any progress been made with this ?

Not 100% sure but I believe the charges were dropped.

personally I think... NO.

I doubt he'd want to go back to a club that sacked him for something he was cleared of doing in the courts.

thanks for your thoughts, i'm not sure what i'd do (from a clubs perspective) & Murphy would probably not want to go back there anyway, could play footy though
