Call me a cynic but is there any chance this could be used as leverage for AFL Reserves teams entering the comp? I can't see that raising $1million in sponsorship is realistic anyway, with or without AFL Reserves teams. Fair enough to explore it, but pretty optimistic I'd have thought.

Gotta agree. $1 million is a lot of money to raise and given that you will be competing against the AFL broadcasts most weeks, I don't think there are a lot of sponsors queing up to advertise.

I was amused by the comment of one poster on "Adelaide Now" who thought he could "smell a rat". Not very hard when there's a photo of the said rodent at the head of the article. Laughing

Part of me is cynical about it - considering their attempt to do it in Perth (which was all televised games had to be at the WACA - I would rather web streaming than channel 9 do the game on the stipulation all games would be at Football Park), however they do the Queensland Rugby League competition, which does cover suburban grounds. If they did something like this, and did it properly, and didn't predominantly cover only Crows/Port reserves sides (if applicable), then it could work.

i heard i think it was Chris Davies (apologies if it was another SANFL official) on the radio the other day saying tv was an important ingredient to keep SANFL footy in the public eye & i agree it is important especially for the elderly, rural & incapacitated people.....i just wonder whether more people would attend games if they weren't on tv......mind you if the SANFL power brokers were in the real world & brought ticket prices back to $10.00 & $5.00 for concession we would see more people going to the football

Seems like it might not just be Channel 9 in the mix?

All articles relating to this topic have referred to the "debt strapped" Sanfl. My memory which may be incorrect is that the Sanfl was far from debt strapped in the 80's and 90's. So how has the Whicker era not been challenged on the financial state of the entity he oversees?

I'm not sure that article is right about being 'debt strapped'.  More likely is that it is currently 'cash strapped', due to bailing out Port Adelaide.

Their asset and debt situation would still be very sound, I'd guess.

Vastly more than that in assets, though, so hardly 'debt strapped'?

The value may have changed but the current administration inherited that Asset anyway yet the previous administration didnt have the cash flow issues. Debt-strapped may indeed be poor wording on behalf of the media but whilst Im no expert I fail to see how the SANFL today could argue they arent more financially limited than when the current governers commenced.

Agreed.  I was thinking more of the drip feed from the sale of the licences.  Slow, I know, but I suppose it all comes down to how Adelaide Oval works out?

Good point. I hadnt factored Adelaide Oval although I suppose that could work for or against? My understanding is that the sale of West Lakes will hinge largely on developer interest and there is going to be a LOT of red tape to be cut through via opposition from local residents down that way.

Scrunch, I checked the financials at October 2011, which I know is more than a year ago.

Assets were $132 million, liabilities $50 million.

Their current ratio (basically how cash strapped they are) was awful, as we both think.

The licences were valued then at about $6 million (I only had a quick look, so that may not be right) and would sell for more than that.

They certainly have some problems relating to cash flow which makes it hard to prop up the clubs.

It will be well worth keeping an eye on.  If my analysis is wrong, hopefully someone more in the know can advise us.

I've got a copy of the SANFL published financials for 2012. When I have a bit of time tonight I'll dig it out and put some numbers on here. I was told the other night that their bank debt, specifically, is around $37 million, which is high as a % of their earnings. At the moment I've just printed out hard copies, to read these various articles by our friend Mr Rucci (I'm old fashioned I need ink on paper Wink ) There are some glaring inconsistencies in them (Anyone surprised?) e.g. This headline, which was explicitly denied by the ABC last night.

SANFL could return to commercial television next season, for the first time since 1991, as the ABC prepares to walk away from football in both Adelaide and Perth.

Also one titled "The Crows can buy their way into the SANFL" which I'll comment on after I've fully digested it.

Absolutely the last thing I want to get into here is politics. Trouble is everywhere I turn there's one of the blighters staring me in the face. Olsen here, Kerin on the other thread. Over the border there's Kennett ready to slap me down. I feel like a fly in a cyclone. We haven't got a chance against these professional gobbledegook merchants. I read through this article by Mr Olsen to discover that he'd used a page of text to say absolutely nothing. I reckon I'm not bad at the old double talk, but these guys are in a league of their own. I think we need divine intervention to save us from here folks. I'll try praying tonight before I go to bed. Laughing
