Magarey Medal
well which players do you think have a realistic chance of winning the much coveted Magarey Medal ?
from the games i've seen so far this year my top pick would be Nick Liddle
so what is your selection(s) ?

Hard to say because I haven't seen every game. You can expect to see James Allan, a proven vote winner. Chris Schmidt from West appears to have had a very good year.
To be honest, I really haven't got a clue

I reckon any of Liddle, Schmidt, Allan or Batsanis could win it.

Liddle but not sure if South have won enough games for him the jag the medal unfortunately ..... Could be against him.
Chris schmit would be my pick.
Love to see Liddle win it though ...deserves it as he battles his little heart out each week with sometimes little reward!!
I remember seeing him in a game this year that we just lost and I looked at him walking off after the game and he just looked physically and mentally spent when others in his team seemed to have a bit left him the tank !!
Top bloke too!!

Re: Magarey Medal
Batsanis has had a very good year, and hopefully it continues. However, each week Norwood would have had many players who would have scored a best on ground at various stages, Cachia, Webber, Jericho, Dawe, Zorzi, Terlich, etc. Batsanis would possibly poll a lot in the top three, but I doubt he'd get enough 3s to win it.
Who knows what umpires are thinking though?

Re: Magarey Medal
Chris Schmidt looks the standout selection at this stage for me. I have him on around 17-18 votes.
Will be interesting to see Joel Cross's tally this year, after a stellar season wasn't rewarded by the men in white with Magarey votes. We saw in 2010 that Nick Liddle wasn't noticed either with an outstanding season, but was runner-up in 2011, presuming the umpires noticed him more in his second season.
Would suspect a number of Norwood players on 10+ votes, but not enough for any of them to win it outright.

Cross had a slow start to the season.
He has improved in the later half though.

If I was a betting man I would put my cash on Schmidt...
Plays in the midfield, regularly amongst the best players, probably doesn't have as much in house competition for votes as some other clubs (perhaps?) and has been in great form all year.
Schmidt for mine

Schmidt or Batsanis for me, I love the way Liddle plays but South have lost too many times and I don't think he will pick up enough first preference votes to win.

For the three top hopes for the Magarey Medal, a very mixed round.
Chris Schmidt and Nathan Batsanis look unlikely to take any further part in the minor round and James Boyd's chances will hinge on the outcome of the tribunal.

I have no doubt at all that James Boyd will be suspended...
It was a silly, roundhouse whack to the chops of Matty Jaensch...
I have had a look at the vision a couple of times and even if Boyd pleads gulity, has a clean record and gets the early discounts, I still think he will miss a couple of weeks...

Could be one of the most open Magarey's for some time ... But how are we the loyal club membership paying supporter going to be able to follow the count this year?

What was once on free to air tv that everyone watched is now unwanted by any of them.
Such a shame to see the magarey medal count ignored by the tv stations, but the long drawn out yawn fest called the brownlow medal count, preceded by a fashion parade of BIMBOS is thrust upon the masses. Boring as can be.

I have an uncomfortable feeling that the Magarey night may be slightly awkward, with two players right up near the top of the leaderboard with the * next to their name: James Boyd and James Bennett.

I've long held the belief that if a player is reported in a game and found guilty, he then forfeits any votes issued to him in that match. Obviously, he also is unable to poll any votes in games he misses due to suspension.
However, votes awarded in matches where that player was deemed as Fair and Brilliant, should be counted towards the medal. It seems absolutely insane that in one moment of weakness, a whole season of great footy is null and void.
Stephen Kernahan not winning the 1983 medal is a classic example.

Yes but I suppose if someone breaks another player's jaw it's equally problematic to award them with something for Fairest and most brilliant.

Breaking a person's jaw in a determined pre-meditated act, I can see your point. However, some of the things players get reported for these days are borderline to say the least. Hardly enough to cost them a Magarey Medal.
I still recall Eagleton being reported last season for head high contact when he was standing up and an oponent dived head first into his legs. I'd hate to see anyone lose a medal for that kind of thing.
