Round 9: West v South @ City Mazda Stadium, Saturday 19 May 2012
v
Saturday 19 May 2012, City Mazda Stadium
Reserves: 11:25am
League: 2:10pm
Broadcast: 5RPH
West Adelaide were disappointing against Norwood while South Adelaide caused a boilover in the Foxtel Cup by defeating Williamstown. Will Westies find that winning form again at home, or will the confidence South got in beating the Seagulls continue back in the SANFL?

how much will the 'travel factor' play in this ? for that reason i think West will be fresher in the last term & win by a goal or two

Its avery important game for both sides. West has still play Nwd, Central & The Eagles each twice.
When they met in the 1st round South had a number of players out including Wundke,Otten, Gotch,Veide, Sandery & O'Shea

South have plenty of injury concerns but I expect them to win and win well..

I honestly have no idea who I think will win this game, a strong case can be mounted for both teams. When in doubt, go for the home team advantage, so West by 10 points. The key will be if West can control Wundke and Ainger in the forward line.

Really difficult one to pick. The intangible is the Foxtel Cup "curse" where teams that have competed in that, struggle the next week. Gut feeling says West by around 16 points.

Not sure about that curse.
West have never lost after a Foxtel Cup game.

South by 3 to 4 goals.
Great side selected this week. We really should come home with the points.
Will be a good game.

Excellent win by West Adelaide.
Thank goodness for the Mini League. Without the kids and their parents the crowd wouldn't have been 1000.
Come on Bloods fans, get behind the team!

The crowd was disappointing yesterday thats for sure. However it was a very good win and one that was very important for the club.
Our defence was magnificent. Fergie played his best game for the yr and Hartlett should be in the state squad he has had a great yr.
Caire continues to be the most consistent bloods player for the past 3 yrs.
Our ball use at times was poor however our game style was much better as we were prepared to take risks. Lobbe was very good and players such as Schmist, Fielke & Laird continue there good form.
The next 3 games against the Eagles, Centrals and Norwood are really going to see where we are as a team this yr. We need to win at least 2 of these games

I arived at the game about 1.30pm and if there was 500 people at the ground it would be lucky!!
Lucky the crowd before the game built up a bit and it was good to see a few more South fans at the game than usual.
Shocking day for us....Veide tried, Liddle once again did his bit, Redden OK. Too many gone missing. Westies were brutal at the ball attack and we were 2nd to it. You dont win games like that.
Without trying to offend West supporters but you side is not pretty to watch. They LOVE the flooding tatics but I can say - it worked...and worked very well. Some of the game reminded me of a rugby game as the ball was bottled up many times.
As I said before. I believe West will play in a Grand Final this year. I rate them very highly.
Reality is South are not a top 5 side. More like bottom 3. Some players are down on form. Will be interesting to see how the year pans out.
Really enjoyed Richmond Oval on the weekend and loved the BBQ and have a chat to a few Westies supporters. If I was a West supporter I would get out there and support you club as there are some exciting times ahead.

Fair comment, but West flooded less than usual yesterday and there were always numbers in the forward line.Southee wrote:Without trying to offend West supporters but your side is not pretty to watch. I thought South were too slow moving the ball through the middle, which gave West time to organise and man up in defence.

Every team floods to some degree, not just West.
However, I think the criticism of West and flooding is that whenever they slip behind on the scoreboard, they seem to abandon their attacking game and concentrate solely on the defensive. Is that fair? I only see them 3-4 times a year at the most so I can't really say for sure.

That was true against Glenelg. Against Sturt and South we always had numbers up forward, including a little bloke to pick up the crumbs if one of our big fellas missed the mark.Adelaide Hawk wrote:I think the criticism of West and flooding is that whenever they slip behind on the scoreboard, they seem to abandon their attacking game and concentrate solely on the defensive. In some games we've fallen down on the fast break from defence because there was nobody up front to kick to, but that issue appears to be sorted now (although I didn't see the Norwood game).
I think our height will worry a few teams.

Why is it that when West lose, they're flooding, but when they win, they play 'attacking football'?
Does anyone really think that Andrew Collins says to his team - I know we always lose when we flood and win when we attack, so today we're going to flood? -
Perhaps the tactics don't change at all, but the execution is getting better?

That's a pretty fair question R&B.
