Post by Lee Mon Jan 30, 2017 1:27 pm

I've threatened it for a long time.

Here it is (and I'm happy to divulge names, apart from a few Very Happy  )

F:              Youngster,                     Girl,                   Piddler

HF:            Flies,                             Prez,                   Hat

C:              Boofa,                          Mad Dog,              Guidance

HB:            Cheryl,                         Drugsy,                Grub

B:              George,                        Single,                 Melbourne Jack

R:               Rubbers

                  Mopsy*

                  Smurf

Interchange:                Mud,               Bang Bang,             Sesame Street

And a bloody good side, too.

Apologies to those I missed, this is off the top of my head, with some assistance.

bang bang is a player from the 40's and 50's, Clarrie Cannon.

Apart from Melbourne Jack, he's the only player before the 80's.

The full-back would be more comfortable where he is, unless his opponent was Rick Davies.

Lethal, great post however sadly as a long term westies tragic i do not know all of these nickname so at some stage you must update with names.

Allowing for censorship requirements, you must tell us the story behind some of the nicknames

Sadly, there are several I don't know much about.

My brother Noel assisted with some of them, as he was a 1983 trainer and before and after that era.

Agree a great westies stalwart.Great club man 110%

Clarrie Cannon is my uncle, even though someone at the club did not believe me so they had to check up on it.They slipped on their proverbial. He was a really nice fella. Used to kick the ball with him when i was a youngster.A very funny kicking style if i remember rightly.

Well, I'll knock over the ones I know so we can narrow it down.

Youngster is Greg Mellor.
Flies is Peter Meuret.
Prez is Bruce Lindner.
Drugsy is Mark Dreher.
Rubbers is Mark Mickan.
Mopsy is Leon Grosser.
Smurf is Bernie Conlen.

Is Melbourne Jack Jack Broadstock?

Any info on the meaning behind any of these? I think The Prez related to Bruce's self-confidence.

Melbourne Jack was Jack Richardson. He hit the post late in one of those Grand Finals.

I think the nickname was conferred because every year he announced he was going to play in Melbourne.

I think he got in with some dodgy characters and came to a nasty end.

Rumour has it that Jack Broadstock was a 'colourful character' too.

Of course Jack 'Captain Blood' Dyer was reported as saying Broadstock was the most talented player he ever saw Fair wrap from someone who saw most of the greats of the time
