As a matter of interest what crowd did you use for the South v Crows game?

The 1372 from Friday night...I figured that's who would have turned up should the game had gone ahead as originally scheduled.  I've seen conflicting figures for the Port/Eagles match on Saturday - 2571 or 2751...I went for 2751 because that's what I saw first and don't really know what is right there.

Something startling I saw was the Port/North attendance...just 1851.  The lowest ever Alberton figure I have is 1777 for Port vs Glenelg in Round 15 2002.

How did numbers from easter weekend this year compare to last?
How have Centrals home crowds changed in the last few years? Smallest crowd I can recall seeing out there for the game a couple of weeks back, even the stock at the ladies cake stall seemed to have reduced

Both they and the Glenelg/Adelaide match last year had 19313; this year 7657...although if you took those out of the equation, the average attendance last year to this point it would be: 2014 - 3112; 2015 - 2706

There were only two games this year for Easter, last year there was a full round - 18675 last year and 12148 this year.

You have to get in early (like at the start of the Ressies game) but their mini sausage rolls are absolutely delicious...

Roy Laird's Mum, Alison, plays a big part with the Ladies Auxiliary and they all do a great job...

The home-made soup and toasted ham and cheese sandwiches at The Bay, from the small canteen in front of the canteen underneath the northern grandstand, are sensational, as well...

Declining crowds are a good indicator that change is needed in our competition. When PhilH looked after marketing at South Adelaide we had a number of themed rounds and initiatives taken to boost our numbers. All SANFL clubs and our administration need to revisit this format as well as looking at how they might include all areas of Adelaide and major populated regional centres in the SANFL.

I think its time Modbury FC, one of the oldest football clubs in South Australia gets admitted for starters..

Story last night on the 9 news that attendances are somewhere about 25-28% down on last year.

The angle of the story was that the 2 afl clubs have caused the drop off in interest. Logical I suppose.

Stephen Rowe very vocal about it when interviewed and in his opinion the sanfl should review the 2 afl clubs participation in the comp.

The clubs are generally noticing the revenue loss already and Kris Grant reiterating their decision to vote no.

Will be interesting to see what occurs further.

There is one thing among the discussion about SANFL TV ratings in 2015 that has been overlooked.

When the SANFL was shown on ABC-TV, it was in the same timeslot during the minor round (Anzac Day excepted) - Saturday afternoons. The minor round timeslot did not change during that time at all.

The 2015 SANFL TV ratings to Round 5 are as follows:

Rnd 1: Good Friday - Glenelg v South Adelaide: 48,000 (Seven)
Rnd 2: Saturday - Sturt v Glenelg: 24,000 (Seven)
Rnd 3: Saturday - Port Magpies v North Adelaide: 48,000 (Seven)
Rnd 4: Friday night - Port Magpies v Norwood: 17,000 (SevenMate)
Rnd 5: Sunday - West Adelaide v Central District: 41,000 (Seven)

Average to Round 5: 35,600

The figures for Rounds 1 to 3, and Round 5 are for games on Seven. At that time, therefore, there was no free-to-air AFL TV game in competition - unlike when it was shown on ABC-TV, where on nearly all occasions, there would be a free-to-air AFL game in direct competition with the SANFL game.

The one time in 2015 that the SANFL was in direct competition to free-to-air AFL was in Round 4, when the Port v Norwood game was shown on 7Mate, in direct competition to Richmond v Melbourne on Seven. The rating figure on that night, of 17,000, is comparable to the ABC-TV ratings for SANFL.

The SANFL games shown on Seven do not have the issue of competing against the AFL as ABC-TV did, so it would be reasonably expected that the ratings figures should be higher than ABC-TV.

In no way whatsoever is this any criticism of the Seven SANFL coverage. They have embraced the product and are promoting the league very well, and the fact that the number of people watching SANFL on Seven is more, is a great boost for exposure - but ratings comparisons are not apples for apples.

SANFL boss Jake Parkinson is pointing to increased club membership figures — and not fallen crowd numbers — as reason to not rethink the presence of Crows and Power AFL reserves teams in the state league.

Central District, an SANFL powerhouse before the AFL reserves debate ended with the State league’s refit to a 10-team competition last season, has called for the Crows and Power sides to be axed. The Bulldogs want an uncompromised SANFL with no AFL content.

That call rests with the SA Football Commission that has given the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs a 15-year commitment to have their reserves teams in the SANFL — but with a review of their terms each season.

“And we are not hitting any panic buttons now,” Parkinson said.

Central District has reiterated its wish for no AFL content in the state league with Bulldogs chief Kris Grant backing his case on falling SANFL crowd figures.

SANFL attendances have slipped to a game average of 2637, six per cent down from last year’s mark of 2819. The 2637 figure is one of the lowest since 1997 when the SANFL had to deal with Adelaide hosting AFL games each weekend with the advent of the Power as the state’s second AFL entry.

At Crows SANFL games, the crowd figure — that was expected to average at 4000 — has dropped 36 per cent to 2173. The Magpies’ figure is down 15 per cent to a 2740 average. But Parkinson disputes the image these numbers leave of fans turning their back on the SANFL. He has compared Central District figures in 2014 and this season across the same opponents.

“The difference on a like-for-like count is 100,” Parkinson said. “The crowd figures are down for the weather. The Port Adelaide-Norwood grand final rematch at Adelaide Oval was superbly promoted, particularly by Port Adelaide. Then it poured on the night — you can’t help that.

“Our other key indicators are up — membership is up three per cent. Media interest and website activity is up. This tells us there is a vibrant and successful SANFL. And we are working at making it stronger.”

Adelaide Football Club SANFL chief Phil Harper wants to keep the Crows in the State league — and hold the same one-team model that is under fire today.

“We honestly believe being in the SANFL gives us an advantage no other AFL team has because the SANFL is a better competition than any other outside the AFL,” he said. “If we are not in the SANFL, that $400,000 licence fee goes from the SANFL to a travel company taking us to another State league (like the VFL).”

Of the one-team model with no academy team or SANFL recruiting zone, Harper said: “We are not rethinking it. If we had less injuries, we would have better results. Our model is working quite well.”

Exclude the two Anzac Day matches last year and you average 2907 to this point.

Do the same for this year (well, the 24th) and you get 2541.

Firstly, let's get one thing straight. Nobody that goes to sit in the outer at Magpies games voted for the current situation. It is what it is through a number of factors, many factors.

Now, while there's a team in black and white playing in the SANFL they will be my team.  I make no bones about it, they're still my team and one that I have followed, supported, sponsored and admired for years. In fact, the third generation to do so and proudly have my children as the fourth generation in that line.

To put it simply, some of the abuse me, my family ( including my 73 year old mother ), friends and fellow Port supporters have been subjected to over the last 18 months has been, at times, bordering on the outrageous. Some venues worse than others. For ever and a day traveling sides supporters have been given a rough deal by the home fans, it's what makes footy, footy. Certainly a huge part of it anyway. When that banter and interaction turn to outright abuse and threats of physical violence the line has been crossed.

There is no doubt in my mind that died in the wool Port Adelaide supporters are not going to games purely on the basis of the increased abuse, the increased level of abuse and threats made.

I'll also acknowledge that many, like me, also have mixed emotions about the current make up of the Magpies and the SANFL.

So while lamenting the "average" crowd numbers take into consideration the absolute **** wits who have made the landscape unbearable for some people to visit. I'd think Adelaide fans who visited games at various SANFL venues would be of the same thinking. It simply isn't worth it.

Not sure about abused Port supporters staying away, (!) but I guess there are plenty of people who won't go to a Port permutation game anyway.....!! And perhaps Adelaide games, for that matter.
