Disappointing we certainly were at Noarlunga on Saturday. Taking no credit away from South, who's third quarter made Sturt look very ordinary. Unfortunately it's not the first time this year, we haven't been able to stop an opponent from getting a run on like that. We panicked, dropped away from the basic fundamentals, and became undisciplined. That we were able to pick up the threads again after the 3/4 break, was to the players credit. But we have to be able to clamp down on a breakaway, before the damage costs us the game. To be outscored by 8 goals to 1 in a single quarter, can't be repeated if we are to make a game of it in the finals.

if this was at footy park i'd think Sturt would find the open spaces & be too quick for Norwood, however it is at the smaller Adelaide Oval & this is why Norwood will choke down Sturts run & win comfortably by 28 points 15.8.98 to 10.10.70

The first team to score 10 goals will win this match.

Other than that I would only be guessing (dont we all)

This season
Sturt too good at Norwood Oval
Norwood too good at Unley Oval

The bigger ground AO might be in Sturt's favor ?

Weather maybe a factor
Damp suits Norwood
Dry suits Sturt

The one thing which steers me towards Norwood is finals experience

If it was a contest of skill, both sides play at their best I would tip Sturt

Talk about sitting on the fence[pun intended]

12-15 Norwood
11-11 Sturt

Scrappy, since the renovations the Adelaide Oval is a lot smaller than it used to be & isn't that much bigger than the two ovals you mentioned.......there is a thread a while back when someone gave us the dimensions, i'm sure someone can find it for us

OK, here we go:

This season Sturt won 11 and lost 7; Norwood did the same.
From rounds 1-9 though, Sturt were 7-2 and Norwood was 4-5. Sturt had only lost to the Eagles by 6pts at home and Port by 50pts at Alberton.
From Rounds 10-18, Sturt is 4-5 and Norwood is  7-2. Norwood only lost to the Eagles by 20pts away and Port by 9 pts away.

Versus all other finalists, Norwood and Sturt’s records are the same overall at 3-5.
Sturt is 1-1 with Norwood, 0-2 with Port; 1-1 with South and 1-1 with the Eagles. Only 1 win came on a big ground, at Woodville.
Norwood is 1-1 with Sturt, 1-1 with Port, 0-2 with the Eagles and 1-1 with South. No wins came on a big ground.
For the record, Norwood and Sturt both won at Prospect.

Of Sturt’s four wins in the second half of the season, 3 came against non-finalists and only 1 win came against another finalist – a 40pt win vs the Eagles at Woodville. Norwood’s only two losses have come against fellow finalists being the Eagles and Port (results shown above).

In rounds 10-18, Sturt has played 6 games at Unley Oval. It played also at Woodville in Rd 10 where it won by 40pts; Richmond in Rd 14 where it lost by 4 pts; and Noarlunga in Rd 18 where it lost by 24pts.

Sturt’s form on big grounds this year is 2-3. It won at Eliz in Rd 8 (52pts) and Woodville in Rd 11 (40pts), but it lost at Alberton in Rd 6 (50pts), Richmond in Rd 14 (4pts) and Noarlunga last week (24 pts). Norwood’s form on big grounds is 1-5 with its only win coming at Richmond in Rd 9 by 21pts. Norwood’s losses were in Rd2 at Eliz (42pts), Rd4 at AO (North by 21pts), Rd 6 at Noarlunga (20pts), Rd13 at Wville (20pts) and Rd17 at Alberton (9pts).

Since winning at Woodville in Rd11, Sturt has played 5 out of its last 7 games at Unley including 3 weeks in a row between  Rds 15-17. In between, they lost at Richmond (to cellar dweller West) and at Noarlunga so their recent record on bigger grounds isn’t great either. Playing at Noarlunga last week (despite losing) might be useful in advance of playing at AO this week however.

I think the “big ground factor” can be discounted this week for Nwd vs Sturt and really only comes into play against South and the Eagles and to some extent, Port.

Head to Head:
Rd 3 – Coopers Stadium
Norwood             0-5-5    2-8-20   4-12-36  7-14-56
Sturt                  3-4-22  5-9-39  7-12-54  10-14-74
Five shots to seven in the first quarter and yet Sturt only outscored Norwood by a point in the next 3 quarters.

Rd 10 – Unley Oval
Sturt                 4-2-26  5-3-33  7-3-45   8-6-54
Norwood             4-1-25  7-5-47  9-6-60  11-9-75
Norwood had 5 shots in the first qu again to Sturt’s 6, and this time they kicked 4-1 instead of 0-5. Norwood then outscored Sturt by 22 pts for the final three quarters.

Goalkickers and Hit Outs:
In Rd 3, Coad kicked 3-2 and Hansen 2-2. Duldig was not on the goalscorers sheet, not even a point. For Norwood, Newton had 2-5, Bartlett had 2-0 and Donohue kicked 1-1. Phillips did not play. Kurtz had 21/22 hit outs. Baulderstone had 31/41 and Dawe 6.
In Rd 10, Coad kicked 5-2 and Hansen 1-1. Duldig kicked 0-2. For Norwood, Newton kicked 4-1, L Davis 2-0 and Persinos got 2-1. Bartlett and Reinbrecht got 1 each. Phillips did not play. Kurtze improved to have 43/45  hit outs whilst Baulderstone had 24 and Dawe 20.

So in their two games this year, Duldig has been kept quiet on the scoreboard and Sturt has not had to worry about match ups on Phillips. Sturt also has the challenge of one key ruckman in Kurtze being up against two ruckmen in Baulderstone and Dawe, on the AO.

Game Statistics

Round 3       Nwd             Sturt      Rd 10             Nwd             Sturt
Disposals      357              295(-62)                    344             308(-36)
Kicks           215              203(-12)                    196             181(-15)
Handballs     140                87(-53)                    146             124(-22)
Marks           94                89(-5)                      88                88(0)
Tackles         22               37(+15)                    41               62(+21)
Hit Outs        42               22(-20)                     46               45(-1)
Frees           21                17(-4)                      16               13(-3)
Inside 50s     43               47(+4)                       49              36(-13)

In their two games this year Norwood has dominated possession of the ball. Norwood handballs a lot more though and Sturt has killed Norwood twice in the tackle count. I’m not sure why the ruck stats changed but Sturt caught up there in the second match, to virtually evens.

What’s different (and unusual) this year is that six teams (including all the finallists)  have played their seasons in two halves of form –

1. Port were 8-1 then 4-5
2. Norwood was 4-5 then 7-2
3. Sturt was 7-2 then 4-5
4. South was 4-5 then 6-3
5. Eagles were 7-2 then 3-6
6. North was 4-5 then 5-4
7. Central was 2-7 then 7-2
8. Adelaide was 3-6 then 4-5
9. West was 2-7 then 2-7
10. Glenelg was 2-7 and then 2-7

If you look at a ladder for only rounds 10-18, (see below), Norwood and South have the form over the second half of the season but only Norwood got the double chance (by 1.64% over Sturt). Sturt got the double chance on slimmer percentage (0.84% ahead of South).

2014 ladder for rounds 10-18. (wins and losses only)

Norwood 7-2 (2ND)
Central 7-2 (OUT OF FINALS)

South 6-3 (4TH)

North 5-4 (OUT OF FINALS)

Port 4-5 (1ST)
Adelaide 4-5 (OUT OF FINALS)
Sturt 4-5 (3RD )

Eagles 3-6 (5TH)
West 3-6

Glenelg 2-7

So based on 2014 game statistics alone, Norwood may be the favourites.

Really interesting, squawk.

I think Norwood will win, in a relatively low scoring game.

arrived at the Adelaide Oval after a hit of golf around 3.50pm & as i walked around the back of the tennis courts i couldn't believe my eyes, we had to line up basically from War Memorial Drive Shocked great game of footy, from two very good & committed teams....one umpire will surely be dropped, the call to ping McGuiness as kicking over the line was a joke, he pinged him for kicking over the goal line parallel to the line post to post, so how he could have seen that from where he was is beyond me, he guessed & as the replay showed he guessed wrong, looking forward to next weeks game & depending on who Port holds back will have a bearing on that, as for the other match Sturts standard was better than Souths' but South are playing with a fever pitch tenacity for the contest
