Media Reporting
He may be under instruction, but Jai Bednall does himself no credit in his reporting of the Eagles and Central trials yesterday.
We worried that this style of reporting would become the norm in our brave new world and his articles aren't a great start.
The Sunday Mail is basically crap and if their SANFL reporting is going to be like this, the last reason to read it has gone.

8 clubs & 2 franchises, obviously the franchise teams are the only ones that matter...................i presume if those two miss the finals then there will be no reporting on the final series
i don't buy the paper at all anymore, so can someone post what was written please

What's worse R&B is that I don't think Bednall even went to the game. Colquhoun may have had 24 touches but woulve missed at least half his targets and got caught with the ball a number of times. The match report printed under Bednall's name was a bloody disgrace.

Agree the write ups for both trial matches were disgraceful

Re: Media Reporting
From my perspective the game was much the same as last weeks with Port Power playing as if the season proper had started with Centrals playing a trial. The big difference between the two sides was physical conditioning. The first qtr belonged to Centrals who should've been 3 - 4 goals up at qtr time. Misses to Gillbee, Wagner (Poster), Glenn and I think Habel were costly at the end of the first. The Power then stepped up and played possession, running football for the next 3qtrs that the Inexperienced Centrals side couldn't cope with. You've read the crap that Bednall wrote so I'll leave the Power better players For Centrals I thought that Cam Milne and Tom Collier did well in the ruck. Trav Schiler worked tirelessly all day and racked up possessions, Matt White, Luke Barmby, worked well out of defense and Luke Habel provided a lot of run and aggression. Wagner and Retzlaff looked really short of a run. There was also some great promise shown by Sam Baldwin and Caleb Edmead. As with Glenelg last week I reckon there's more upside to Centrals than there is to the Power.

Re: Media Reporting
I'm always amused when people complain about reporting in commercial media. The content in the Advertiser/Sunday Mail is targeted at the biggest audience in order to sell the most newspapers and maximise profits.
Reality is, most people reading the paper this morning would've been more interested in the performance of the Adelaide & Port Adelaide sides than that of their opponents. Hence that's where the focus went.

Although I agree generally with that, GN, I don't think it excuses poor journalism.
It's poor journalism, IMO, to not mention a team who won the game by 5 goals. It's poor journalism not to mention one player from the opposing team. It's poor journalism to disrespect 50% of the participants in a game and it's poor journalism to disrespect those readers who follow the SANFL.
A journalist can still write a good article about the game and concentrate on what most readers want, but still give an accurate and balanced report of a game.
Jai Bednall has shown many times he can do that, so I'm getting in early before it's too late.
The 'Tiser or the Sunday mail can go down your track, but at the price of losing a reader. Perhaps 2 or 3, or more.
Their circulation is already dropping like a stone, I would have thought they'd not alienate too many more of their readers.

Not necessarily the journalist's choice in this one.

Yea, I agree with you R&B. Print media has really declined in quality of the last couple of decades. The lack of competition keeping each other accountable doesn't help the situation.

Yes, I did suggest he might have been under instruction.
A short-sighted instruction.

Their circulation may be down print wise, it is picking up electronically, remains about the same.

When it comes to football reporting, these days I generally just get my news from the source i.e. Club or competition webpages and also some good fan based sites.
The Footy Almanac is a great one.

I can guarantee you that Jai was at the game as I sat right next to him the entire League contest...Wongdo wrote:What's worse R&B is that I don't think Bednall even went to the game. Correct. He would limited, by his bosses, with not only space but content restrictions...eartotheground wrote:Not necessarily the journalist's choice in this one.

Isn't Jai an AFL reporter now and thus no longer responsible for SANFL reporting?

I've just caught up with Warren Partland's article on Saturday and it was good about the SANFL trials.
If Jai is an AFL reporter now, then no problem.

I'm pretty sure is now predominantly an AFL reporter, based on a lot of AFL stories written by him in The Advertiser so far this year, but I'm sure he will still cover some SANFL games.
