Re: The trots at Globe Derby
A very well respected man throughout the harness world in this country was "gentleman" Jim Hurley.
I got to know his son and daughter in the mid seventies and one Sunday morning at the trials Robert (his son) asked me if I would take some of the harness gear back to there stables.
We put it in the boot of my car but didn't leave straight away. I completely forgot it was there, and so I headed home
forgetting that I had all of this gear in my boot.
I had turned onto Port Wakefield Rd. heading south when all of a sudden this car came screaming up next to me and Robert was yelling out that I had all of the gear in my car, just imagine how stupid I felt Anyway I did a u turn and drove back to the Hurley stables, they are a great family and the trotting world has lost one of there finest.

It was a lovely service. Jimmy Jacques did the Eulogy and was brilliant as usual, he had some funny anecdotes and really captured how people universally thought of uncle Jim. It was nice to catch up with so many old friends to remember him.

Yes- as mentioned by Bayman, pretty much since I was born. My grandfather was a trainer/driver and so I don't remember not being at the trots. I've had quite a few slow horses of my own since then and had a lot of fun along the way.

GDP
SAT 4/4
R1-2 The Natures Boy
This pacer has similar form to Bayman at a Pub smorgasbord
The Natures Boy has run seconds at its last 7 starts
Bayman goes back to the Pub salad bars to fill his plate up with seconds about that many times as well
The Natures Boy has been beaten by small margins at its last 4 runs
Beaten a head last start , beaten by half necks at its 3 previous runs
Its only a recent trait of running seconds
Career stats
42 starts
9 wins
11 seconds
5 thirds
No one could begrudge this pacer a win on Saturday night
Looks a good chance to be in the finish again
IF you do back it, better back it Each Way for insurance

I used to go every week, starting in the old Wayville days, then the first several years at Globe Derby.

I had my photo in the paper as a 3yo when the Hall of Fame opened at GDP. My grandfather worked pretty hard , sourcing stuff for the museum and my mum wrote up pretty much every label for every exhibit in the place. The best horse we had in the early days of Globe was probably Son of Joy, Armbro Time and Lord Grace were probably up there too so you may remember one of them.

Son Of Joy
Is that the pacer that would often be very wide and in the death seat in a lot of races it was in ?

Yep, that's him. He was a beautiful big horse and very tough. Quiet as a lamb though. We were all devastated when he died from a twisted bowel.

Really sad news about Tony. He was a great guy who did a lot of stuff for the harness racing industry. Another who will be sorely missed.

you & he were great to listen too when you were on the Monday night Victorian Harness Show, when Tony came on with the South Australian segment, he was always great to listen to on 5RPH also, because he always had an opinion & his opinions was him trying to improve the sport

Tuesday 7/4
Globe Derby
I think there are 2 good bets at the paper odds
R4-2 Our Little Artist $1-90
If they bet $1-90 I will shocked
I think it will be about $1-20
R7-5 Glenn Maxwell $8
If it starts $8 I will be amazed
I think it should be about $1-30
I give it a BIG show of winning

Our Little Artist wins
The BIG show was beaten by a bees knee
The BIG show was nowhere near $8
It started $1-45 fav
The Advertiser was too clever !

perhaps the horse isn't named after Glenn Maxwell, perhaps he is named after Paul Wight, thankfully i worked late & didn't read this, as i was on Hilltop Rose after seeing it win a trial comfortably albeit in slow time, knowing as a rule you are a great judge your post may've influenced me to change....he's in on Friday night, race 7 no 1 i'd be buttering up if i were you on an each way basis
