Farewell Football Park
Well, we've now come to what will almost certainly be the last ever competitive match at Football Park aka AAMI Stadium next Sunday as Norwood take on North in next week's Grand Final.

This thread is dedicated to those that want to purely discuss the ground, and your memories over the 40 seasons the ground was used. What are your favourite memories of Football Park? What will you miss about Football Park? What won't you miss about Football Park? What significant events at the ground were you at?
Discuss away folks.
PS - I may throw in various footage of Football Park over the years.

Re: Farewell Football Park
Well there are 3 highlights for me.
1 SANFL GF #1 1974
The Blues prevailing in the first Grand final at Footy Park in 1974 (it will never be AAMI to me) prevailing against the Bays kicking with a decent wind in last quarter.
2 SANFL GF # 3 1976
And of course the 76 Grand Final which will inarguably be my favourite player of all time's greatest individual performance and witnessed by the biggest GF attendance ever.
3 The Rolling Stones 1995
Back in 1995 I saw the Greatest Rock adn Roll band of all time, strut their stuff on the Voodoo Lounge tour. Had been waiting a lifetime for that and finally they came to play in Adders. Got the T-Shirt (which I still cannot wear in mixed or underrage company). And the sealer was that this was the (pre-mobile age) night before my son was due to be born. No biggie, went to the Stones of course and he wasn't born for a few more days.
It is a shame but it is a ground that I hold little affinity for, as such.
The ground is a concrete cauldron, but then the MCG and Etihad are no different. But strangely they have been better thought out.
AAMI has done itself no favours by its lack of consideration for patrons in a lot of ways.
- The fact that you have to go outside to obtain food and refreshements.
- The Weslo frenzy of promoting their version of "security" and patron "happiness".
- Beer prices. A decent margin above other venues I have attended.
- "Treatments" like the plastic sponsor marquees over seats. WTF?
However, it will go down in footy, cricket (WSC) and concert history for what has transpired over 40 years of patronage.
RIP Footy Park.

forgetting footy, my favourite moment was as a 13 or 14 year old seeing Agnetha Faltskog drop her pants on stage during a concert

I was there the day the bomb went off, killing a bloke starting his car.
You could see over the southern wall at the top then.

Yep, Agnetha dropping her tweeds would throw your vision sideways.

Went and watched Alice Cooper's...Welcome to my nightmare back in the late 70's... came home stoned without even smoking a joint. The air was thick enough of the stuff anyway.

My favourite memory would have to be as a teenager seeing westies in a night game against port where we were 9 or 10 goals down at quarter time and ended up winning a cliffhanger after Scott Simister took a screamer and kicked the goal ! I'll never forget that game

I was at a West game in 1975, behind the goals at the southern end. At that time, I think there was no seating higher up, just concrete steps. if you stood on the top steps, you could see over the wall towards the shopping centre.Gingernuts wrote:Say what???redandblack wrote:I was there the day the bomb went off, killing a bloke starting his car.

I was near the top watching the game when there was an almighty BOOOMMMMMM from the shopping centre direction. I went up to the top step, but I don't think I saw much from that angle. Found out later a bloke was killed and someone had planted a bomb in his car.

Wow, thanks for sharing that story R&B. I'm surprised I've never heard it - car bombs aren't exactly an everyday occurance in Adelaide.

We would have won that game if we'd kicked a bit straighter.

Re: Farewell Football Park
One of my Highlights Was when West played Port there and I think West kicked 1 point to Ports 9 goals. Scott Simister took a Mark in the dying mins. to win the game for the Bloods. I guess that was one of my First Time representing West Adelaide. I guess you can Add the Bloods wining The Foxtel Cup there this year.

while on morbid memories, there was a death threat on a Norwood player (i do know who but not sure i should mention his name) if he played, Norwood played him & never told the player of the death threats until after the game, fortunately nothing eventuatedredandblack wrote:I was at a West game in 1975, behind the goals at the southern end.
