Merger Rumour

Following the weekend rumours about West, South and Glenelg in merger talks, all clubs have categorically denied it.

Here is West's statement:

False Club Merger Rumours

In response to comments in the media on the weekend the club would like to assure its members and supporters that it has not and does not intend to enter into any discussion regarding mergers with other SANFL clubs. The Board has done an enormous amount of work to ensure our financial position is strong and we will again post a profit for season 2017. We have very strong commercial partnerships, our membership numbers remain solid and our venue is operating on increased turnover. These factors along with the support from the SANFL Land Divestment program will guarantee that we remain financially strong and independent into the future.

Although we have had a challenging start to the season there has been some improvement to key areas of our football program.

We would like to thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to improving our on field results in the second half of the season.

Another KG and jars crock of S**t. I'm sure they just make crap up if it is a slow news week.

3 into 1 would be a very far fetched occurrence.
Hard enough to get even 2 sets of members voting for a merger, but 3?

However, forgetting the truth factor to it, hypothetically if something like that were to occur, it would decimate the balance of the competition over the edge. It is unbalanced to a degree already with the afl sides in.

But reducing the traditional clubs to 6 would tip the interest and relevance of a suburban competition to nil in my view.

I don't think the sanfl would want that either. It would surely help before things got so dire as to allow such discussions to take a serious toehold.

It was reported on MMM that KG was very adamant about his source. But putting something like this out there without it being virtually across the line, is very destructive. It will be interesting to see what the South and Glenelg boards respond with.

If it is based on some fairly flimsy heresay, then KG should know much better. Hope he knows how to make scrambled eggs.

Sad thing about this situation/rumour is the timing of it all !!!

I see the MMM producer is getting a little salty on certain social media pages now the 'rumour' has been busted.

Well they should not make things up or even embellish things either, if they said it as a proposal to help then fair enough but to say it as fact to create a stir is a disgrace, whose on MMM ? I only have AM in my car

Would it have been so hard to ring the Presidents or a board member of each club before going to air? It's irresponsible given the damage it could do.

That would require KG to do some responsible journalism, something he's never been capable of.

Was the small grain of truth the potential to share costs of common adminstrative or other costs.

That was my understanding of it. The clubs were looking at setting up some sort of joint back office to reduce admin costs. Not quite the same as merging teams.
