How long have we had International umpires in the Sheffield Shield ?

good question............have we got umpires injured, or at overseas matches or indeed preparing for the T20 world cup ?

Some of the shots the SA batsmen played when they got out were appallingly bad.

SA's batsmen also seem to have no idea of turning a start onto a significant innings The proportion of scores over 30 being turned into 60's, let alone centuries, would be very small.

Cosgrove out in the 30's again.

Cooper dug in a bit better, but failed yet again.

i went tonight after work & got there at the change of innings

most batsman got ''a start''

T.L.W. Cooper c: Wade b: Tremain 18 6030.0020 Video Replay
M.J. Cosgrove c: Stoinis b: McKay 33 4082.5060 Video Replay
S.J. Raphael lbw: Ahmed 28 3482.3540 Video Replay
T.M. Head not out 35 5070.0030
J.S. Lehmann c: Tremain b: Ahmed 7 1353.8500 Video Replay
J.M. Mennie not out 0 260.0000

Cooper was very scratchy but batted like he wanted to be there for the entire innings, he got to 11 & started to middle the ball, he played at a ball that was just outside off stump but not far away you could confidently leave, so can't blame him, good ball & bowler too good

Cosgrove was looking good he put away every loose ball & played straight to the good balls, had just smashed a boundary & then drove a ball which just carried & it was a great catch, disappointing to get going to get out but he got to 33 hitting loose balls like that

Raphael was looking as good as i've seen him & was given out lbw, watching the replay on the screen i could see why he was given out but equally could see that the decision could go the other way, it was a 50-50 & he got the wrong end of it

Lehmann, well that was crap, the softest of soft dismissals, he drove a wide, short spinner straight to cover with the easiest catch you'd ever see, i think it hit higher on the bat than anticipated & just ballooned to cover, no need to play a shot like that with about 5 or 6 overs left

Mennie did what he was sent out to do, he stayed there, he survived & why ? because he got behind the ball & played straight, a few could take a leaf out of his work ethic

Head, he just keeps getting better, he played straight, he put the loose ones away & carefully guided the ball for singles & as we all know is a great talent

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

history & logic says they can't win but while Head along with Ludeman, Ross & to a lessor extent Zampa are there they could surprise but they all need to do what the top 3 did  & get a good start & unlike them go on with it & we could have 3 centurions which could give us an unlikely win

Disappointing ending, we collapsed again to lose by lots. I hope this season doesn't end like last one where we were good until Xmas and poor afterwards.

Some big changes for the next game.

Probably worthwhile.

yes like I said cooper needs to be dropped on his form and bring in a young guy. Got to get tuff on under performing players, can't go on names anymore if this state wants to be serious about its cricket.

Fergusons' long term injury is one of the keys that is missing from a steady middle order, i still would not have dropped anyone for these reasons, they are very much still in contention, the team needs stability & fine pre match address these players with the ''your running out of chances'' line, happy to see Alex Carey get another chance although he looks better in a Glenelg jumper Wink

Fair enough to drop Ludeman he has had a poor season, I notice his career average of only 24 with only 2 hundreds and seven fifties

yes he has been struggling for two shield seasons now. Hope Carey can get some runs in the last few games and make the spot his. Young Nielsen is about the place aswel.

Young Harry ( Nielsen ) doesn't put many big scores on the board, at this stage anyway. Like his Dad, good with the gloves though.

Sa do it again get in a winning position and fold, all the new guys did well. We need the exsperienced guys to stand up. Cosgrove head and Ross (all need to be more consistent) Ross has struggled since he won Bradman young cricketer of the year,he needs to get in bfore he starts to get flashy with his shot making. The same goes with head just gets out to nothing balls.

As I've said many times, too many scores in the 30's and 40's.

After leading by nearly 100 and being 1 for 50 or so, that's a poor effort.

Another year down the drain.

well sometimes you have to risk games to win them, they risked it & lost, better that than a meaningless draw....those that were happy with the forced changes, are they happy now ?

the changes were all good weatherald and Carey did well with the bat it's guys like Cosgrove and Ross who are not pulling there weight at the moment I would drop Ross he needs to pull his head in. And we didn't risk this game we should have bowled them out for 160 in the first innings and we batted poorly in the second innings that lost us the game.

unlike you who must have watched it, looking purely at the teams totals it looked to me like the redbacks' were trying to set up a match & hence lost quick wickets in the process

I watched quite a bit of the game on the net. At no stage did SA "risk" the game. In fact in the second dig Cosgrove in particular was the opposite, he was dreadfully slow on the second afternoon and then was dismissed early on the third day. Sure SA should have bowled NSW out for about 160 in the first dig, but they shouldn't have been bowled out for 177 itself in the second innings. Too many soft dismissals from players whose technique is suspect.

What about this game

WA 6/436 DEC
QL 8/446 DEC
WA 5/291 DEC

One of the cricket sites stated that QL were set 281 off about 66 overs
Very very generous declaration , but WA were compelled to set a target to stay in the SS finals race

2/182 after 39 overs [99 off 27 overs needed]
3/182
4/207
5/210
6/210
7/228
7/256...25 needed off 8 overs
8/256
9/257
10/257

WA win by 23 runs
QL lost 8/75 after being in a gimme position

LADDER
45.12 VI
38.16 QL
35.92 NS
33.83 WA
32.87 SA
23.77 TA

TA thrashed VI
QL folded against WA
NS beat SA , a game SA let slip
The top 5 undecided as yet, as VI and QL didnt get max points

ROUND 9

TA V NS
QL V VI
WA V SA

QL and VI might play safish against each other
WA V SA might prob see a gifty chase set
NS will be prepared to lose to win against TA

LAST ROUND
QL V WA
SA V TA
VI V NS

This rounds tactics may well depend on what happens on round 9
SA can still make the SS final

SA 298
NS 8/119
NS 211
SA 1/72
SA 177
NS 4/88
NS 5/147
NS 5/267

SA had their chances
Just could not finish off NS in both innings
Maybe one experienced bowler off winning this match ?

Are the expectations of the current group too high ?
SA had a very inexperienced line up in this match

21 Weatherald
31 Cosgrove
28 Raphael
22 Head
23 Lehmann
23 Ross
23 Carey
27 Mennie
21 Valente
21 Andrews
24 Worrall

This Babybacks line up against NS had an average age of 24

Other Squad members
24 Benton
29 Cooper
20 Gregory
31 Ferguson
28 Ludeman
20 Neilsen
30 Putland
25 Richardson
28 Sayers
22 Winter
21 Smith
23 Zampa

Correct. A really poor batting effort (again).

It seems standard for the Redbacks to collapse and their technique sometimes just looks sub-standard.

Add a lack of mental application, with batsmen invariably getting starts and getting out when set, and you get the results we've seen.

They're crying out for a solid 'rock' batsman to anchor an innings.

Wasn't the situation that he wanted a 2 year deal and the SACA only offered 1

Or were there other factors involved as well, either way it looks a poor decision by the SACA
