Re: 2016 Rule Changes
I think extending the distance for a mark to be paid from 15 to 25 metres would be a good rule change, The kicks of around 15-20 metres would probably still be paid a lot but it would eliminate the 5-10 meter kick being paid a mark.

Glenelg V Norwood
Just a clarification
Rioli kicked a goal in the last quarter
I would say the siren went about 5 seconds after he kicked the goal
Should the ball be bounced in the centre , and then 5 seconds later the siren sounds?

Re: 2016 Rule Changes
Time on would start when the goal umpire signals a goal, I'd assume, so the siren shouldn't sound after that until after play has resumed again.

Re: 2016 Rule Changes
second handed, the umpire blew time on after awarding the free kick & there was 2 seconds left

But he would have to have blown time off again for the player to take his free kick.

Re: 2016 Rule Changes
Bump.
Well it looks like the 2016 rule changes have generally worked. The SANFL is the only state league this year to have reduced the number of stoppages. And quite significantly.
It is also the only state league to have increased average scores per game. All other state leagues went backwards in both areas.
The restriction of 60 rotations didn't seem to cause much heartache.
And players seem to have adapted to the 'last touch' out of bounds rule, e.g. in the Grand Final only 4 frees were paid for that reason.
My guess is that the AFL's new strict interpretation of deliberate out of bounds could be preparing the way for a similar rule change.

Re: 2016 Rule Changes
I think it would be just easier to adopt the sanfl rule if they really want to police it more clearly.
Easier in the umpire as he doesn't have to work out intent. A grey mass of uncertainty that.
Question: With fewer throw ins do you still need 4 boundary umpires?

I agree, it would be easier, but I think what they're doing might be a way of inching towards that.
You probably do need 4 boundary umpires because even with fewer throw-ins, one boundary ump could still find himself 100 metres behind the play pretty quickly.

Re: 2016 Rule Changes
Off course they use rules/laws the sanfl implements, it is almost a trial run & see how it goes & use if it works, they will use this particular one next year or by 2018......the rule that the AFL should have implemented was to have both the 25 metre & 50 metre penalties in vogue, some 50 metre penalties are a joke

Agree completely. But they don't like giving umpires 'grey' areas.

Re: 2016 Rule Changes
I think just about every rule is a grey area.
As soon as they utter the word "interpretation" it is grey.
Interpretations can even change week to week.
How many "take the legs out" frees were not paid during the finals?
I reckon there were 3 in the AFL GF alone.

If your Hawthorn,Geelong or the Bulldogs there's a different book of rules.Chambo Off To Work We Go wrote:I think just about every rule is a grey area.

Is there any sensible reason why the SANFL has different rules to AFL and any other comp?

most are jokes but not all.....if a player punches/elbows another player after he (or she) has got a free kick or a mark, then a 50 metre penalty should occur

I had not known this until today
All 4 quarters go for a maximum of 28 minutes
I will assume this happens so the League teams can get on to the ground and have a preparation to start on time
Should these games start earlier ?
Should it be with a time on factor included ?
How long have these 28 minute quarters been in vogue ?
PS
South defeated Adelaide Crows today in the League match
The winning goal kicked 29:50 into the last quarter
Thats 1 minute 50 seconds after the quarters finish in the reserves grades
Not 100% sure but think this may have been as a result of the 2014 Reserves Grand Final. Eagles had 2 players (and Sturt possibly 1 player) go down with potentially serious injuries that required a lot of attention from docs and trainers which meant the last quarter had to be shortened due to the time certain start for pre-match stuff for League game.
Will there be last quarter time on in the Reserves in 2017 ?

That I would put down to it being one of the least weather affected seasons in the last 20 or so years. There were not any full rounds affected, and only about half a dozen matches had significant enough rainfall in it to reduce scoring.
