South Adelaide
After years of draft droughts,South lose 3 players this year.
If you add Fraser Dale to that, are they vulnerable again?
Darrou should be a good pick up and they kept Eddy, but .......?
What do South fans think about it?

I think South will still be up there.
They still have a quality midfield and just need to replace a few holes down back.
Obviously it is tough to replace thewlis, brooksby and fields but gotchy seems to have them on the right path

they play for each other & as we know that is a huge plus, hell how many have Norwood lost in the last few years ? it hasn't hurt them because they play for each other, are on the same page & have a very disciplined game plan...South much the same imho

I reckon if you look back, we have had a thread like this each year.
My crystal ball simply says, get another beer form the fridge on this subject.

Interestingly we haven't had a South fan's view yet. I guess after so many years of letdowns, they're holding their collective breath at this stage. And to be perfectly honest so are Sturt supporters about our team, for the same reasons. Being able to back up, week after week, season after season is the hardest part of the game. I only saw South twice in 2014. We scrambled in against them by a few points at Unley in mid season and of course, they made a mess of us in the semi final. They've got the basic material there and they should be able to go on with it. Losing important players always hurts, but it throws down the challenge to some of the others to step up.

Think the differance is we have a fair bit of depth at the club. We have had guys in our Ressies who would be league regulars at many clubs and are able to step in at anytime to fill the voids. South dont appear to have this luxury, their ressies and 18's are fairly ordinary to say the least, they will probably needto recruit to fill their gaps.bayman wrote:they play for each other & as we know that is a huge plus, hell how many have Norwood lost in the last few years ? it hasn't hurt them because they play for each other, are on the same page & have a very disciplined game plan...South much the same imho
I agree they still have the nucleus of a very good side, if they can pick up a couple of recruits they will be in the mix again

Re: South Adelaide
here we go...
!. we have a coach who is respected and loved by the players.
2. As previously said , we have a team thats united and playing for each other..
on the flip side....
1. We have lost Brooksby , Fields and Caleb Daniel in the draft
2. We have also lost Dale, Hourigan and McKay and our captain Josh Thewlis has retired.
me thinks we have a few shoes to fill..
weve picked up Darrou and Haren and 3 newbies..that no one knows much about...
IMO the jury is still well and truly out....

The big problem is the players they have lost, and they are all quality players, I hope the Panthers do continue there resurgance and play finals again but some big gaps have been left with there departures.

South were one of the more financial SANFL clubs going around a few years back.
Like a few they have invested in upgrading facilities (ie lights and redevelopment around entrance) which has created a debt to service and possibly these improvements have not generated the extra return expected.
Night footy was the golden goose for most clubs looking to invest in lights but for Central, West & South I don't think it has worked.

Re: South Adelaide
One advantage that I feel South had in season 2014 is that the number of AFL players lost to the club was minimal compared to some of our rival clubs. I expect some of the those clubs to pick up some lost ground in that area in 2015 and think that South will be reeled back in accordingly.
The loss of the players mentioned is a fact of life for any SANFL club that performs well. Norwood seem to lose players of that and better calibre each season and rebound and come back again anyway.
Its interesting to note that Ron Fuller took South into the finals in his first year at the club not unlike Brad Gotch has. I think this next season will be the telling season for the future of the SAFC. If we stand tall and finish well, then I feel that we are in good hands to move forward. If we fall over because we simply lost three players it suggests that its been simply window dressing as opposed to genuinley rebuilding the club.
As for any financial loss, I really could not give a toss when the club is winning matches and playing finals. A number of SAFC members have had a gutfull of seeing rubbish performances on the field and then getting end of year gloating letters from the SAFC about how much money the club made that season. Quite happy to take a loss financially if it leads to actual success. Sides like Sturt seem to be able to run at a loss and still be there that the business end of the season for several times over.

Yes, I've got the Central's AGM this evening and it will be interesting to hear the thoughts of the board on a range of varying topics...

Not a massive turnout here at our AGM, as usual! We've got to get more younger people interested in being more than just members.

Licensed club - 280k

Unfortunately a scenario all too familiar to Sturt members in recent years. Some hard work ahead to turn it around. No quick fixes I'm afraid.

How much of that debt is attributed to paying out Ronnie?

I am led to believe over $100k in the Football Club accounts. The Club believe with the restructure and cost cutting in the Licensed Club we'll be break even next year. I used to be proud that our Club had not got caught up in the SANFL practice of over budgeting gaming income. Looks like we led the charge last year!

Changing fortunes for a number of clubs, Central also announced a six figure loss. Certainly challenging times ahead for clubs, who need to be much less reliant on gaming revenue and seek alternate income streams.

Yes, it is challenging times for all clubs. My best wishes to all those Board volunteers trying to rescue their clubs from difficult circumstances.
