West Adelaide Team of the Century
As far as I know, West have never selected a 'best ever' team, so I thought I'd start the exercise to pick one here.
All welcome to have their say and I thought we'd start with:
Full-forward.
The candidates are:
Roger Luders
Peter Phipps
Adam Richardson
That bloke in the 30's whose name I can't remember
Anyone else I've forgotten.

I think it has to be Luders. The only forward to kick the ton in a season, our highest ever goal scorer and the most consistently sensational high mark I've seen.

Agreed. A pure excitement machine.
So full back? A bit harder, I think.

Craig Williams?
Where did Ken McGregor (the original one) play? CHB?

Good point, FF. Williams was an All-Australian.
My recollection of Ken McGregor was that he played CHF.
Doug Thomas would be in the mix at FB, too.

Centre.
He'll be an automatic starter in that position, I'd think.
If we move away from specific positions, there are some who would also be automatic.
Neil Kerley as player and coach, Bruce Mcgregor, Ken Eustice, Robert Day, Brian Faehse and several others (not forgetting Tim Symes, of course ).

Luders for FF, without doubt.
I think another auto starter would be a certain red head in the back pocket named Bernie Smith. Also I'd Have Lynch on the wing, and Eustice would have to fit in somewhere, either on the other wing, or the half back flank.
BTW, I'm going to see Ken Eustice tonight. What a great player he was.

Would Mickan be a contender in the ruck?
Bruce Lindner on forward flank or pocket?
G Fielke on the wing?
Where would Kerley fit in, ruck rover?

Yes, Mark is a multi-B & F winner. I would think Colin Smith would be first ruck (?). Lindner would be a big chance and Fielke would certainly be in the side.
You're right, I would say Kerley would be a follower in the first ruck.

Ok, possibly not. Just wanted to re-live that great mark against Port in 1994

I know it was a long time ago, but does anyone have details on how many games Leahy played for West before going to North?

I believe he played 58 with West and 111 for North, so maybe he hasn't played enough footy for West to be included. He did, however, play in 2 West premiership teams, 1908 & 1909.

Any player in the WAFC Hall of Fame should merit inclusion, surely?

I was going to ask this. I recall Geoff Morris was in the Hall of Fame, do you know who the others were? On the West Adelaide web site it only lists 8 players.

I would say:
Definitely: Luders
Most probably: Fielke
Short list: Morris
Possibles: Meuret, Borchard
