Pivotal Moments In Music

A chance to list some of your most pivotal moments in modern music....to kick it off
to
1) John Lennon and Paul McCartney meet for the first time in July 1957 in Woolton, Liverpool

2) The 1984 Grammy Awards. Michael Jackson won a then record eight awards and his performance was part of the all time greatest ratings for the Awards, nearly 44 million viewers. Add in "Thriller" to this as a record, and its easy to forget now just HOW big Jackson was at the time.

3) Glenn Shorrock, Beeb Birtles and Graham Goble decide to form Little River Band....okay, that was more a pivotal moment in MY music history ..but fire away, folks...

That's the night, yes.

Still ancient history, but I think Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was a huge turning point. This is the album that brought grunge into the mainstream.

Probably why Cobain topped himself. He hated mainstream commercialism and he had become exactly that.

After hearing it on JJJ, I had to get that album imported from the US because there were no copies in Adelaide. Seems hard to believe now.

Good call. I was in year 12 (1991) and when this album came out it definately changed something in the air.

All we had up till then was poppy dance music all coated with sugar or hair bands.

Nirvana came and basically made a statement that the world is pretty crap ....its not all sugar coated and nice - take this!!!!

I remember my brother bringing it home in 1991 a few months before it took off and I just did not get the whole thing. After a few listens laying down on the floor in the rumpus room with headphones on - I got it!!!

Over night all my mates wore flannies, ripped jeans and grew there hair......I even grew a goatie!! (looking back its terrible!!)

Defnately a movement there that I wont forget!!!

I think you really have to go WAY back.
Although most were there, nobody on the wife’s side of the family can remember the exact date or place.
(Who am I kidding? They can barely remember their own names or monosyllabic language!)

But I reckon I the most Pivotal Moment In Music was when my mother-in-law first hit two rocks together.
And if she was anything like her daughter, it would have been either side of my father-in-law's head !

Or going back to 1973 when Pink Floyd redefined the album after songs had to be no more that 3 minutes. They invented the term concept albumn.
Still and always will be my all time favourite band.

And now my kids can't get through 45seconds of a song on their Ipods before it is boring and has to be changed.

Concept album probably would have started with the Beatles sgt pepper.

Yes that is probably right. We can thank LSD for the birth of the concept album! I think Floyd who came on board around the time of that album, must have been influenced by it (both Beatles and LSD).

After 1973, there were a string of artists doing concept albums and I think the genre stuck in the middle 70s.

My recollection might be a bit dusty, but I think it was the Beach Boys who were one group influenced by Sgt Pepper which sporned Good Vibrations.
Although I doubt any Beach Boys album could be considered a concept album, other than its general association with surf culture, they took on board the notion of extended songs that went well over 3 minutes.

You also had the Stones with their critically panned, Satanic Majesties Request which was their answer to Sgt Pepper.

Probably the concept album and extended songs taking hold did not happen so immediately as I mentioned. Being a child of the 70s, I recall other big acts, taking up the new song style.

EG Led Zeppelin with Stairway to Heaven. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody would be another.

The Eagles' Hotel California and Lyin' Eyes both clock in at over 6 minutes for the full versions. Radio usually shortens the latter for airplay, however.

Would be seeing Del Shannon, Roy Orbinson, Gene Pitney, Beatles, and various ARTISTS at the Wayville Show grounds
And especially the MASTER'S APPRENTICE'S at the FREEWAY HOTEL (now Bridgeway) on a SAT AFTERNOON

PS Led Zeppelin have a song called KASMIR 8 min 42 sec a great song plus ACHILLES LAST STAND 10 min 23 sec

On the Led Zeppelin's double album REMASTERS there are 26 songs and 10 of them go over 6 minutes

I'm going to draw a long-ish bow here, but will pass this one to the panel - when this gentleman emerged with his music, it raised the bar completely for parody as a more "recognised" style of music:

Yes a very long bow. Not quite concept album.
But you are now into the 80s now where I reckon only artists coming in were from the 70s that were into the concept almum and also promulgated the 6+ minute song generally.
I think the concept album as a genre for new artists had almost died by the time Weird Al, gave us his best parodies.

Sorry Chambo - I wasn't intending to make a link between Weird Al and concept albums. Was looking at Weird Al on his own as increasing the visibility of parodies as a means of popular music actually selling, rather than just "quick entries into charts.

Went to see "Echoes" a Pink Floyd tribute band last night as part of the Fringe.

Didn't go with high expectations, but these guys were absolutely sensational. They've been rehearsing for 2 years and now doing gigs.

And tubular bells might be one of the greatest concept albums of all time?

1975 The year I turned 12 and discovered both The Runaways(first all girl punk rock band) and Blondie .The rest as they say is history .

Hearing music coming from my daughters bedroom a few years ago .You'd be better off with the Sex pistols .Now I have them on my MP3 player lmao the first boy band the SEX Pistols .
