Ray Button was certainly considered a star when I was a kid by all my Glenelg-following friends.

I agree with Flag no.9 that a number of. Friends who supported Glenelg thought Ray Button was a very exciting player

I played back pocket in one of the most successful teams ever, racking up over 250 games.

Apologies for the delay.
In perhaps my best ever individual year, I was Coach, Captain, B&F and leading goalkicker for my club.

Sounds like Len Fitzgerald to me.

Re: Who Am I?
I don't think Fitzgerald was leading goalkicker in the years he was captain, coach and B&F.
However, not who I was thinking of.
In fact, on three occasions topped his club’s goal kicking list.
My playing career ended in 1978.

Re: Who Am I?
Correct with Robert Oatey.
It was 1968 the year he was captain, coach, B&F and leading goalkicker. He was runner up in the Magarey medal too.
Didn't have much success whilst coaching at Norwood and was dumped at the end of 1973 and left to join Dad at the Blues.
Grabbed a flag in his first year, so I guess he was a bit chuffed with his decision to leave the Legs.
As a youngster he had actually been better at baseball than football, but, preferring the latter, he stuck at it, and gradually improved. Whilst at Norwood Boys’ High School he spent four seasons as a member of the first eighteen, two of them as captain.
Late in 1960 he began playing with Norwood’s thirds team, ultimately helping them to the premiership. His league career commenced the following season and ended in 1978, during which time he played 232 games for Norwood, 69 for Sturt, and 9 for South Australia.
During his peak years of the late 1960s and early ‘70s he won Norwood’s best and fairest award four times.

I played 3 games for my club in my first year, then didn't get a league game again for 3 years.
That didn't stop me playing over 200 games for them in defence.

Re: Who Am I?
Chambo, is Oatey thought to have helped lay the foundations for Norwood's 1975 premiership at all? Or was it not really connected in any way to his time there?

Re: Who Am I?
I did read from "Australian Football" site, that it was felt he did contribute to the later success Norwood had even possibly onward to 1978. They mention Hammond and Balme in this respect, carrying on what Oatey had started. Both those guys held the reins for quite a while.
I haven't read anything definitive on this however.
You would think it logical that RO would have been influenced by what his father did at Norwood but Oatey Jnr may have been too young to fully appreciate that directly, but I guess back in that day legacies did linger on.
However, you would think that considering both Oaties were coaching in the late 60s - early 70s (the elder with great success, the junior not so) that they would have been observing each other pretty closely.
JO had 12 seasons 1945-1956 for 3 flags finishing no lower than 5th.
RO had 6 seasons 1968-1973 for 0 flags finishing 10/9/5/5/4/4.
So he was heading in the right direction when Hammond took over.
Hammond - 6 seasons 1974-1979, 2 flags finishing no lower than 5th.
Balme - 11 seaosns 1980 - 1990, 2 flags finishing no lower than 5th.
Between JO and RO 1957-1967 the club did ok and were in the finals 6times but without winning a flag.
It is interesting how many times from 1951 (after the 1950 flag) to 1974 (before the 1975 flag) ie nearly 25 years they finished 2nd, 3rd or 4th. It was 14 times.
