Port have announced that Sam Gray and Aseri Raikiwasa have signed to play with Port next year. This is now officially a farce. The Magarey runner up is happy to sign for a maximum of $8000 match payments for the season if he plays every week?

Even less, 18 games makes it $7,200.
The SANFL need to investigate this to the fullest extent.
As I said, Port can't be trusted and this makes a mockery of the spirit and the word of the agreement.
To have a full time professional team in the SANFL is one thing, but if the top-up players are MM runners-up on $400 a game, it will be farcical.
Clubs have been offering Gray big money.
Strong action needed, SANFL, and quickly.
There's a limit to how many 'development' roles there are in a club.

It wont matter for Gray, he will be rookie listed by The Power...Flag No.9 wrote:Port have announced that Sam Gray and Aseri Raikiwasa have signed to play with Port next year. No problem if he is, but if so, the announcement is just a PR spin, of course.

We lost a couple of "top up" players a little while ago, but they were returned so no questions will be asked.testy wrote:

Port have a few decisions to make before draft day, a couple of other delisted players they are looking at that have been well hidden by their football department in draft talk. This may affect how they consider the Gray issue.Big Phil wrote:It wont matter for Gray, he will be rookie listed by The Power...Flag No.9 wrote:Port have announced that Sam Gray and Aseri Raikiwasa have signed to play with Port next year. Pretty certain talent scouts are a little more wide spread and comprehensive than they were in1999.

Bad choice of words on my part. Not discussed in media, would be a better description.Booney wrote:How would a club "hide" players ettg?

Re: Port Magpies 2014
I think it has been reported in the media, but given the new arrangements for Port this season, it seems the club is now not big enough to support 2 car dealerships under the one roof.
Maughan Thiem have been a sponsor of the Magpies for a number of years, but now that they are effectively the Power Reserves, Renault seem to want to exercise their right as the major sponsor over both teams.
So Maughan Thiem will relinquish their current sponsorship deal with the club.
I guess you can look at this 2 ways.
Firstly, just a sponsor wanting their brand undiluted in the marketplace where they are spending money.
But secondly, it could be a further sign that people are understanding the change is more than just who plays in a Magpie jumper. They could have made this sponsor change last season, as it was still one club, wans't it?
I think by the time the season starts, I will be sad to see the Magpie jumper running around. It now doesn't seem right to use it under the pretence of being the Magpies.
Yes next season will be different and who knows what will happen in the sanfl by then.
You can still buy a Magpies membership, but is it any different to a Power membership? Looking at the member benefits on their web site, I don't think so.
Same price and same benefits. I don't know why they have even retained the 2 categories. At least you can buy tickets to sanfl games.
Whereas, looking at the Crows site, I cannot find even one reference to their sanfl team at all, let alone buying memberships that give you tickets to sanfl games.
What was it the Crows said they would generate at sanfl games? 4000 or something like that. And yet you can't pre-purchase tickets from them.

Port Adelaide Magpies have announced 23 year old Matt Venter as their newest recruit...
He is a former Rugby Union player from Western Australia...

Rugby, as in Union, not League. Trivial, I know, but I dont like League but I can watch Union.

Re: Port Magpies 2014
I am not knocking the Magpies on the Matt Venter recruiting, It always amuses me why clubs both in The SANFL and the AWL spend time and money on someone who has been brought up on a different code of football.
Surely the time and effort can be better spent on an up and coming junior that will bleed for your club, or a player from within their zone who has potential to play senior footy.
If these types (good locals) of players were given the time, effort and money spent on them the club would gain a long term benefit, rather than maybe a few years from someone who has to learn the game from scratch.
Have I misssed something somewhere along the way, or what?
