Re Kerley leaving West - from memory it was something to do with him somehow being involved with the Americas Cup.

I think Cahill started at West in '85, so Im thinking Kerley srayed for 84 season.

I wonder if Kerley regrets not staying with West for longer in that particular era.

From memory, he went back to coaching in SANFL, with Centrals in around '88.

Round 9
1983
West v South
Round 9

WA 7.2...8.7...13.11...13.17
SA 3.2.. .3.5....6.7.......6.8

Did this game irk Kerley, Thomas, Cassinova Jeff, Blacky, the Cappo clan, Wolves, Redandblack ,Ken Cunningham, Mark Beswick, First Blood,Robert Day, Coorong, Trabilse and others ?
Was there shock waves around the club?
Was Neil Kerley in panic mode?

Why ?
Beacuse the 13.17[95] was the lowest score of the season scored by West Adelaide
It was the only time West Adelaide scored less than 100 points for the Minor and Major rounds

This game was a  rarity , a goal less last quarter by both teams

Reading the first paragraph I was expecting a great and secret conspiracy about to be unfolded.

The resolution was a bit anti-climactic! Very Happy

Round 1
1983

WA..6-3...10-9 13-18...23-22
CD...2-3.....6-6. 7-8......8-10

A 10 goal last quarter
Luders 7
Lindner 4

Round 2

WA...5-4...9-7.. 11-15....21-22
WV ...3-2...7-6..12-7......15-7

An upset on the cards ?
Nah
Another 10 goal last quarter by the Blood and How Fars
Lindner 5
Smith 4

But the real game in round 2 was between the arch enemies
What a game I was there

NW 3-0...10-3...15-6...17.6
PA..2-4....6-6....8-10..15-11

A big finish by Port , but the legs hung on , phewwww

Round 3

WA...5-5...16-7...21-10...29-13
GL ...6-4...12-5...17-7....23-11

Only a disappointing 8 goal last quarter by West !
Match total of 336 points , might be a record or close to it between the teams ?
GL kicked 23-11 and lost by 38 points !
Luders, Lindner, Smith 5 goals each
Kernahan kicked  6 for Glenelg

The other interesting game

WT...4-5...9-8...14-12...15-15
NA....6-3...7-8.....9-11...14-17
Johnson 3 [WT]
Paul Arnold 3 [NA]

Good last qtr by NA but too late

Round 4

WA...6-2...10-3...13-14...18-17
WT...7-2...10-7....11-8....14-10
Conlen 5
Smith 4

NW 5-3...17-7...20-8...29-14
GL..5-4...7-6.....12-9...12-12
Rocky Roberts 8
Sticks Kernahan 3
This game is listed was the highest score of the season thus far, eclipsing WA by 1 point in round 3

After 4 rounds the ladder was :

WA 4-0
NW 3-1
PA 3-1
ST 3-1
SA 2-2
NA 2-2
WT 2-2
CD 1-3
GL 0-4
WV 0-4

After 4 rounds WA had scored an amazing 620 points [155 average]
NW 2nd best with 483 points [120.75 ave]
The bottom team WV had scored 315 points[78.75 ave]
West had the 6th amount of most points scored against them 398[[99.5 ave]
The motto of attack is the best form of defence shows up for the WA

Leading goalscorers

17 Roger Luders
16 Rick Jumbo Prince Davies
16 Tim Evans
16 Johnny Platten
15 Neville Rocky Roberts
14 Johnson [WT]
14 Bruce Prez Lindner
13 Eddie Fry

Look at those goalscorers
What a list of talent

The best overall forward ?
The best overall players I think are Platten then Jumbo Davies
The best forward Tim Evans

Platten as a midfielder yes, as a forward not so sure.
If the blues had played Jumbo at FF his whole careeer, he would have rewritten records. But then we may not have won '76 if that had been the case.

Timmy played most of his career at FF, so yes understandable he would get that gig.

Well he scored 635 for Sturt and only 3 of his 14 odd seasons were at FF. Another 37 for Hawthorn from a forward pocket and 146 for South in 33 games I think.

That is 818, 1000 would have been a monty!

Agree with Chambo, he would have kicked a lot more than 1000 easily.

Needed two of him, as his ruckwork was awesome as well.

And a good bloke from the very limited time I spoke to him, but very approachable and genuine.

Rick Davies and Roger Luders were the full forwards for ST and WA
This is how the Reserves Goalscorers finished in the 1983 Minor Round

97 Wilmott [ST]
83 Falting [WA]
56 Conder [SA]
57 Delaney [PA]
50 Green [NA]

Wilmott finished with 99 goals after finals , would have been very disappointed
How stiff was he the A grade Full Forward kicked 151 goals that season
I wonder if Wilmott played any A grade games in 1983

Falting finished on 83 goals
I wonder if he played A grade in 1983 as well

Another interesting goalscorer was Roger Delaney with 61 goals after finals
Ends up being a very very good full back when he played A Grade

Ultimately, Merv Keane thought Wilmott was a better prospect and Davies was shown the door.

Davies is as big a legend standing on the terraces chewing the fat* with the Chambo Choir as he was on the footy field.

But then of course we are biased...............Wink

*and there is plenty of that!

Round 5
Top of the ladder[WA] v 2nd on the ladder[NW] on the ladder , at Richmond Oval

WA 5-5...9-7...13-11..14-16
NW 3-0...8-4...11-5....16-6

West 18 points up at 3/4 time, but were overwhelmed by the 1982 Premiers
Looking at the scorelines, there might have been a breeze perhaps
Only % separating the 2 teams , with WA still top

Roberts 5
Turbill, M Aish, Michalanney,Marano 2
Warhurst, K Thomas, Button 1

Luders 6
Lindner 5
Grosser, Conlen , R Winter 1

Best players
NW : M Aish, Jenkins, Button, Schmaal, K Thomas , Marano
WA : Bennett, Conlen, Summerton ,Mickan, Smith, Borchard

Umpires
D Schramm
D Foster

Crowd
Richmond Oval 7,975

Roberts[5] Luders[6] Lindner [5]
The 3 highest goalscorers all failed to make the best players lists
Micael Aish who had a future affiliation with WA , was adjudged best for NW
This win might just have had people thinking NW would be back to back premiers

WA-NW-ST-PA all in 4 wins after 5 rounds
NA on 3 wins were 5th

Remarkably the team with the lowest scored against them was SA
SA 408
NW 469
A total of 61 points less than NW who had the 2nd least against

Great memories, Scrappy. I remember a lot of those games.

John Falting was a very promising full forward, but didn't play a lot of league due to Luders, Lindner, etc.

Round 6

Footy Park
WT...0-4...8-8...10-8...23-11
GL....6-6...8-9...14-13..15-16

GL 29 points up at 3/4 time, and lost by an astonishing 43 points
There must have been a breeze that day
I wonder if a certain GL barracker on this site recalls this match
Carter 4 goals for the Eagles, Sticks Kernahan 3 goals for the Tigers
Leigh Robson best for WT, Sticks Kernahan best for the bays

Alberton
PA 2-3.....8-7......11-11..16-17
WA 9-8...11-10...20-13...22-16

Looks like another strong breeze in this game
It was hard to win at Alberton in those days
After being over run by NW the week b4 , WA have bounced back
Leon Grosser that energetic rover booted 5 goals
Milan spoofer Faletic and Ross Agius 3 goals each for the home team
Geoffrey Morris best for WA, Craig Bradley best for PA

Prospect
NA 5-1...8-3...13-8...20-15
NW 5-3..10-6...13-9..13-10

NW overun WA last week, and NA emphatically steamroll the legs in this match game
I wonder if a certain NA barracker on this site recalls this match
A bloke called Grenville kicked 10 goals and was adjudged best for NA
I never saw the legendary Ken Farmer play, but I saw the legendary Grenville Dietrich play !
Phillip Gags Gallagher best for the legs

Other games
SA 19-16
CD 12-6

ST 24-19
WV 16-9

Attendances were interesting in this round

GL V WT 6,985 [Footy Park]
SA V CD 5,320  [Adelaide]
PA V WA 10,767 [Alberton]
ST V WV 7891 [Unley]
NA V NW 4613 [Prospect]

I'm very surprised that NA v NW  clearly was attended by the least
Look at those crowds compared to 30 years later in 2013
More population less crowds these days as well

Leading scorers
26 Jumbo
26 Luders
24 Rocky
21 John Schneebichler Shocked
19 Johnston
18 Paul Arnold
18 Glynn Hewitt
18 Johnny rat Platten
17 Sticks Kernahan

Glynn Hewitt was playing for South Adelaide this season
Had a son who was 2 years old at the time called Lleyton
As history shows Glynn bred a Wimbledon Tennis winner in 2002

Johnny Cahill bred Darren Cahill also a good tennis player who once beat Boris Boom Boom Becker

Darren Cahill was Lleyton Hewitts tennis coach at one stage

Interesting 'sets' of of happenings with 2 big names in the SANFL , Hewitt and Cahill !

Round 7

WA 4.5...7.7...12.10...15.16
NA  1.1....8.6...10.8...12.12

Round 8

ST 9.4...12.10...19.10...29.16
WA 5.2...10.6...12.13...17.14

By today's standards it seem inconceivable a side scoring 17.14 could be beaten by a whopping 74 points.
This was the game the gum chewing superstar kicked an astonishing 15 goals at Footy Park
Rick Davies took his tally to 43 goals for the season , and Sturt headed the ladder
Rocky Roberts kicked 8 when NW trounced WV by 68 points , and had 32 goals

Then there was this match

NA 6.5...13.9...19.10...19.11
PA 4.1...10.3...14.3.....21.7

A crowd of 10,321 must have been stunned at this finish
29 shots to 17 at 3/4 time that should have had NA even further in front

QUESTION
The 15 goals Rick Davies kicked at Footy Park
Would that be a record at the oval in all games Question Question Question Question Question Question Question

Round 9

WA 7.2...8.7...13.11...13.17
SA 3.2...3.5.....6.7.......6.8

This was the only time the Bloods TARnished their 100 + points record
This was the only time they scored below 100 points in 1983
As posted earlier it was a wet day
No goals for the last quarter in a year in a comp of exceptionally high scoring

ST beat NA by a massive 89 points , and still on top
Jumbo Davies 9 goals Flash Michael Graham 6 goals

LADDER
7-2 ST
7-2 WA
6-3 NW
6-3 PA
4-5 SA
4-5 NA
4-5 CD
4-5 WT
2-7 WV
1-8 GL

GOALKICKERS
52 Davies
33 Luders
32 Roberts
28 Johnston
28 Lindner
26 Diet Rich
26 Schneebichler
23 Smith
21 Hewitt
20 Arnold

GOALKICKERS
Reserves
47 Wilmott [and cant get a game in the A grade because of Jumbo]
33 Hartfield [who was playing for GL at this stage ]
32 Falting [imagine trying to make the A grade WA forward line]
31 Delaney [ ends up playing a great career at Full Back for the 1870 pies]

Round 10

CD 4.4...4.6.....6.10...13.13
WA 6.2...11.3.14.12...20.13
Smith, Winter, Luders 3
Wilbur Legend Icon Wilson 3 goals [this guy had a cult following, one of my favorites]

23.13 WV
22.15 WT
Malcolm Blight 7 [ cashed in my first dole cheque when he worked for the Savings Bank of SA]

14.12 PA
15.11 GL
This must have been an upset, bottom beat 4th on the ladder
Glenelgs best players were[and remember they were still bottom on the ladder]
Mcdemott, Maynard, Carey, Hall , Walsh, Symonds [wow!]

11,940 and I reckon I rolled up at Norwood Oval for this match

NW...4.5...9.8...14.10...20.11
ST 4.2...10.6.....15.9....21.12

Rocky Roberts 9
Jumbo Davies is not listed as scoring a goal, he must have been injured ?
Ian Wilmott kicked 6 goals for Sturt , perhaps his first game in the A grade in 83?

I reckon I was at this match
If so this is my recollections
Norwood were about 5 goals up entering the time on period in the last quarter
Norwood had kicked about 6 goals to 1 and dominated this last stan za
Sturt exploded and kicked 5 goals in time on to win by 7 points
I was stunned , ST were irrepressible , the most incredible of comebacks

ROUND 11

WD 1.3...5.3....9.4......13.7
WA 9.4...14.7..22.10..29.18
Luders 8
Blight 7

Second best listed for WV was a chap called Ron Fuller
Ronnie played a zillion games in a great career, and coached a Premiership team
Ronnie Fuller also played for Flinders Park before joining Woodville
Ronnie had the great honor of standing me one day
I amassed about 25 kicks that day on a future SANFL footballer
The only problem was I reckon Ronnie had about 40 kicks on me  that day
Our careers never ended up on a parallel
I was to intermittently play about 3 seasons in the Amatuers

CD 16-8
NA 18.16
Grenville Diet Rich announced himself in 1983 in this game at Elizabeth Oval
He kicked 12 goals , and zoomed up to 40 goals for the season
Grenville was simply an amazing footballer
He rarely looked fit enough to be a SANFL player
Grenville was a very likable fellow
We have crossed paths on many occasions , and whenever he sees me he will always have a chat with me
That's the way he was and still is, a very popular bloke
And boy could he play football
Without a doubt my favorite NA footballer

PA 14-11
NW 14-9
Tim Evans 4 [the best bearded full forward of all time in the SANFL ?]
Ray Huppatz [ was the best WV rover I reckon I saw , now at Port]
Rocky Roberts 4
Best for NW was Tom Warhurst [I currently buy my shoes from him in his Pirie Street shop]

17.12 ST
15.18 GL
Jumbo 6
Peter Motley 4 , I never saw his dad play, if his dad was a better player, he would have been an exceptional footballer
Glenelg best 6 players that day
Mcdermott
Kernahan
Hall
Carey
Marshall
McGuiness

Look at those GL best players
GL 2-8 sitting on the bottom of the ladder
Yet I venture to say, all 6 players would be in the best team of GL players I've ever seen

I used to complete against Chris Mcdermott in those times.
Bojangles disco on North Terrace !

WA and ST were still equal top with 9 wins, SA were 4th with a 6-5 record
Here are the for and against of the 3 teams

WA 1510-1109
ST 1419-1112
SA 1136-887

That SA had 200 + less points scored against them and be 3 games behind the top 2 was unusual

Was the CD v NA game the one where a Central official went out on the beers on the Friday night shouting big Grenville for the whole night and ended up snozzled.

The big fella wandered in to kick a lazy 12.

Not sure if it was this game that went down in Doggies / Dietrich folklore.

Perhaps Spell_Check could list Grenville diet Rich's 10 goal + hauls against Centrals
If its the only 10 + haul, Chambo your a ruck rover, your on the ball.

RE Peter Motley.

When Bradley, Kernahan, Naley and Motley all went over to Carlton, one ex-board member who I spoke to once much later, said that he thought Motley was the best of them. He felt that was the case late in 1986 after they had a season under the belt.

Remember in 1983, Mots beat the Jumbo to the Sturt B&F even with his 150 goals. So he must have had a decent year from CHF. He was an amazingly gifted athlete. Could fly for the high marks, read the play at ground level and was pretty quick too.

And we know of Motley's misfortune in 1987.

Mots is still at nearly every Sturt game.
