I would have had Eric Weidemann from 1927 somewhere in the top 50.

Kate Miller-Heidke too was worthy of consideration.

What were the criteria for rating?
If success is one, how could Jessica Mauboy be above Kylie Minogue?
She doesn't even get a gig in the top 30.
Over the past 25 years has there been a more successful female Aussie singer?

Should the Bee Gees be one or three? So is Barry Gibb only one-third of the 12th best singer?

Chambo, the criteria might be
The Best singer, not the best at making songs or money. ?

PS
We have to wait until number 63 for a singer that was Living in the seventies, but is no longer with us

Neil and Tim Finn - Born Te Awanutu, New Zealand.

Taking that into account, of the 11 named in the top 10, 3 of them are not technically Australian ( IMO ) then John Farnham is indeed at the top of the list.

If we were to count Bon Scott, because of my musical inclinations, then he would be for mine.

Te Awamutu.

The City of Roses Very Happy

The countdown lost credibility immediately at that moment for me. For him to be so low is stunning. His range and ability to adapt styles over the years of Skyhooks was testament to his strength (which was complemented by Greg Macainsh's songwriting talents). Living In The 70's deservedly maintains a place as one of the best albums this country has ever produced.

I went to Prague once, at Mrs redandblack's insistence.

Wondered why we went looking at old cemeteries, particular trees, etc all day.

She's a huge Michael Hutchence fan and told me they'd 'Never Tear Us Apart' Very Happy

I had dinner once with Michael's brother, Rhett.

An experience Shocked

Ditto indeed.
Was a massive Skyhooks fan and Shirl had more influence in the 70s than most singers in bands of his type that came after him.

If we are talking greatest singers, then there are some absolute burglars in this list.
Don't rate its crediblity much looking at it so far.

Chambo
CK
I completely agree the lists are full of artists who are listed on top of artists who I consider better as well
But its merely opinion
For example if every poster listed their own personal top 10 , everyone else would query some of those listings

For example TFSA music guru Southee has listed Steve Kilbey as his number 1 , certainly a Freaky Conclusion
How many of us would list Steve Kilbey in our top 10 ?
I wouldnt, even though Steve Kilbey is a fantastic singer

Another example is Chambo has a Kamahl album ....

31-40

31 Dan Sultan
32 Kate Cebrano
33 Russell Morris [ makes my top 10]
34 Gerry Humphries [this singer is a loved one]
35 Johnny Okeefe [should be higher]
36 Olivia Newton John [on looks would be top 10]
37 Slim Dusty
38 Stephen Cummings
39 Ross Wilson
40 Bernard Fleming

Johnny O'Keefe is before my time, and he isn't necessarily isn't in my top 5 singers, but I do agree, he definitely should be top 20, perhaps even top 10.

JOK was B4 my time as well
I have a few of his albums , and he is a sensational performer, with a sensational singing voice
So much so I included one of his hits as one of my wedding songs
That song was the rivetting She Wears My Ring

Would like to know what criteria they used.
Or did they just go on a personal vote?

John Farnham was born in Dagenham, England. So that makes at least 4 of the top 10 technically not Australian.

I agree strongly that Shirley Strachan should be much, much higher. I know that it was Shirl's song but one Saturday night about 25 years ago John Farnham was singing Women In Uniform on Hey, Hey. Half way through the song Shirl came on the set and they started singing a duet. Suffice to say that Shirl kicked Farnham's brains in.

I'm not saying that makes Shirl a better singer, but I reiterate. He should be much higher.

41-50

40 Bernard Fanning
41 Adalita
42 Judith Durham
43 Marc Hunter
44 Kasey Chambers
45 Joe Camilleri
46 Steve Kilbey [Southee is this too low ?]
47 Keith Urban
48 Daniel Merriweather
49 Billy Thorpe [I would have him much much higher, but then again most people I know think that Im crazy]
50 Jon Stevens

There was a benefit concert to raise $$$ for Marc Hunter in 1998
Marc was ill with a throat cancer
Various artists covered Marc and Dragons songs
Johnny One Farnham covered April Sun In Cuba
Marc unfortunately died a few months later

I saw Marc Hunter and Dragon perform in a nightclub near the corner of Morphett and Hindley Streets
I think the club was called Le Rox
The band on that particular night was outstanding

I don't have a real problem with Barnesy, or Farnham, or ONJ being included as Australians, they come over here young (although Barnesy may have been a bit older than the other 2, given he still has the accent).

BUT there's no way *Marc Hunter should be included as an Australian, the Finn brothers either. If they're going to put those 2 in, they might as well put Wendy Matthews (Canada) or even Leo Sayer (UK) in the list.

*despite not considering him to be anywhere near an Australian, he (Hunter) is one of my favourite all time singers.

Dont think Jess Malboy should be there.

Paul Kelly is NOT a good singer...good writer but not technically a good singer IMO. (Way to high on list)

Gurrumul is an amazing singer and spellbinding. (Higher on charts IMO) Cool

Dont think that is too low Scrappy......I can understand that. Dont think Steve Kilbey is the greatest singer but for me he is mysterious and very poetic. He also writes some of the best "dreamy" tunes.

I am bias as they are my favorite Aussie band who I believe are criminally underated !!! Seen The Church perform about 8 times and have never been disappointed (some shows are better than others!!)

Here is a quote I think sums up Kilbey well :

"Steve Kilbey’s voice is understated, aloof and a bit mysterious," Joe Hansen of Grinspoon points out.

Actually Barnesy at 5 years of age was the youngest to come to Australia of the 3, ONJ was 6 and Farnham 10.

I have always been puzzled as to why Barnesy kept his accent when he came to Australia at such a young age but I have met other people bought up in the 1960s in either Elizabeth or Whyalla who kept their regional British accent.
