Re: RIP
if there is a better SANFL Port Adelaide footballer, I didnt see him
This is as big a compliment a non Port barracker can give
As a kid I would ride my pushbike to Alberton Oval to see Johnny Cahill and Russell Ebert play
R.I.P Russell a champion on and off the field

Re: RIP
I've seen many greats over my time watching SANFL since the 1970's.
Russell Ebert was one of the most balanced and poised I ever saw. So clean with disposal and so calm and composed in traffic. Absolutely one of the fairest of any era and to win 1 Magarey Medal is magnificent. No man will ever win four ever again. Few men can claim to be the first coach of a club premiership as he was in 1988 with Woodville's Escort Cup win. A humble and reserved man who was as much a champion off the field as he was on it with so many wonderful deeds after his playing and coaching time finished.
The heart of South Australian football beats a little less tonight and the Port Adelaide Football Club has lost its greatest ever player. A night many of us knew in our hearts for a long time was coming but is still so hard to believe. Very deepest sympathies to the Ebert family and Port Adelaide Football Club for the loss of a man who will never be forgotten.

Re: RIP
Indeed, a lovely tribute.
I saw plenty of Russell's games and he was everything that's been said.
I will always treasure having g a photo of the 1997 State of Origin team, sitting in the same front row as Russell.
Aptly, Russell was front and centre as Coach, I was lucky to be on the end as a bit helper.

Re: RIP
Like one or two others I have seen (like Robran and Bagshaw), Russell always had more time and space than other players.
Was very strong and rarely caught by opponents. Always seemed to get his hands free to do damage with those overhead handballs.
Just about the complete player really.
As John Cahill said in interview last night, no negatives.
Truly one of the legends of the game.
