2016 SANFL IGA LEAGUE FINALS SERIES

By ZAC MILBANK | Twitter @zacmilbank

The 2016 SANFL IGA League Finals Series will kick off at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday, with Woodville-West Torrens claiming its second minor premiership in succession despite losing to Norwood in a dramatic Round 22.

Succumbing to the Redlegs by 24 points at Coopers Stadium, the Eagles still finished with a buffer of nearly two per cent on second-placed South Adelaide.

The fast-finishing Panthers also tallied 28 premiership points after beating Adelaide by 38 points at Hickinbotham Oval.

With star pair James Boyd (collarbone) and Lachlan McGregor (broken arm) sidelined by injury, the Eagles have earned a valuable week’s rest as well as a direct path through to the Second Semi-Final.

Michael Godden’s charges will confront either South Adelaide or Sturt, with the Panthers and Double Blues set to collide in the Qualifying Final from 3.10pm.

This will be a rematch of the 2014 First Semi-Final, in which the Panthers prevailed by 68 points in a major upset.

The Double Blues finished their minor round campaign with their scores locked on 86 with Glenelg, the contest at Peter Motley Oval proving to be the first draw of the IGA League season.

In the Elimination Final, Adelaide’s SANFL outfit will make its IGA League debut in the major round against Central District from 12.10pm.

The Bulldogs sealed their finals berth by defeating West Adelaide by 42 points at My Money House Oval in Round 22.

Expect Central District champion Paul Thomas, now an assistant coach with the Crows, to play a pivotal role in planning to defeat his former club.

The winner of this contest will progress to the First Semi-Final while the loser will be knocked out of contention for the 2016 premiership.

South Adelaide star Brett Eddy has won his first Ken Famer Medal as the SANFL’s leading goal kicker, finishing with a tally of 68 goals for the season.

The high-flying Panther kicked five goals against Adelaide at Hickinbotham Oval in Round 22, to finish ahead of Sturt pair Mark Evans and Kory Beard, who both tallied 46 majors.

Eddy was unlucky not to win the award in 2014 when he led for the majority of the season before being pipped by Eagle Michael Wundke in the final round.

In a major boost for SANFL fans, finals ticket prices have been reduced from 2016 prices, including all children aged under-18 being admitted for free for the entire IGA League finals series.
