Re: Thoroughbred Talk
I love the jumps unashamedly, however I think their time has probably come. I used to follow the jumps religiously back in the day when Jamie Evans and Mick Patton were on top but as the jumps have been more and more marginalised, the smaller fields just aren't as interesting as spectacles. (I don't mean for falls- I hate seeing horses or jocks injured) smaller fields and less races mean that there's not enough opportunities for the horses racing and so the races aren't as competitive. It's just dying a slow death. It's a shame but it's not going to turn around now.

On a lighter note- Blake Shinn endured the ups and downs of racing at Canterbury...

NEW WHIP RULES AS OF 1/12/2015
Take care if betting on the nags
As of yesterday the rules have been amended on whip use by jockeys
* A limit of 5 strikes by backhand or forehand leading up to the 100m mark of the race.*
This may affect the form of some horses ?

Re: Thoroughbred Talk
Its hot, we are in a heat wave
My house pets are feeling the pinch , even with the air conditioning on
We have back to back Friday/Saturday Morphettville meetings
The temperature forecasts are
42 Friday
43 Saturday
There must be concerns on the safety of the horses
Fingers crossed no animals end up distressed or deceased
The animal activists may have an opportunity to vent some anguish this weekend
Should these meetings be called off ?

Re: Thoroughbred Talk
The horses, yes, the strappers, stable hands etc should not be subjected to working in those conditions. In fact, I think at 43° all sports, all organised outdoor activities should just be completely cancelled.
I too hope the horses and all involved with any activities outdoors tomorrow head home safe and well. For mine, there should be no races tomorrow.

Should there be a heat policy ?
Or is there a heat policy at present ?
Also take into consideration that we have harness meetings at Port Pirie [friday]and Globe Derby[saturday] this weekend as well

Re: Thoroughbred Talk
RACING TOMORROW was called off 3 hours ago at least, harness horses are a tougher breed & trainers have the right to scratch without penalty for extreme heat, however will i be at gdp tomorrow night if they are on, nope i've worked in it all week, that's enough, i think either call them off (tonight as well) or start about 8.45 pm

" I'd love to have him racing today because , when when he was around 25 years ago , he was competing against the best of his time
He would chase bold front runners like Vo Rouge and wear them down and beat other cracking horses like Stylish Century
It was just a golden era of race horses."

I was at Derby Day yesterday and the State Govt could have collected a packet if these fines were being enforced!!
Saw one guy at the end of the day with no pants (just jocks- although he still had his shirt and tie on) climbing under one of the roses for a little relax. Saw another bloke decide that 100m was too far to walk for the toilet so he just watered the lawn instead, and plenty of people having intense conversations while swaying in the light breeze.
Thankfully the idiots were in the minority, most people managed to enjoy their alcohol without making arses of themselves.
For the record I had a few ordinary races punting wise then went down to the stables and picked the winner of the derby so I came out ahead. Friends own Tiamo Grace so I got some pics with the trophy from the Wakeful too which was pretty cool.
Not going to any of the other days of the carnival this year- it is great racing but I have to admit prefer about 50,000 less people there on race day.

Re: Thoroughbred Talk
The SAJC has made a loss for 6 years in a row
2015-2016 loss amounted to $3.68 million
Depreciation amounted to $2.68 million
On course commissions through the TAB continues to slide , competition from the Corporate bookmakers cited as a BIG reason why
In an attempt to offset future losses, here is a n extract from a press report
*...the introduction of a daily fee for trainers who use the pro-ride and sand tracks and the swimming pool at Morphettville
Its envisaged this will recover costs of around 750,000 annually.*
The 'buck' has partially been passed on to the trainers
After 6 years of losses, how can the SAJC turn things around ?

Re: Thoroughbred Talk
no wonder they are charging $15.00 to get in, well Cox Plate day that is what they were charging to get in........i only went down there to pick up the Pilko pasties....................Dennis Markham made some interesting points on radiotab on Monday morning just gone & among other things said that with these figures (the ones he was talking about) & the way the were promoting the ''improvement'' was disguising the true problem that exists

There was a considerable delay between races 3+4
The omen tip was :

It ran 3rd at the massive odds of $101 with the Bookmakers

those that i know who were at the races & some were getting cricket scores, they thought that there must have been a bomb scare there as well, given the delay because of the Harper injury
