Were just part of the Port Festival events on the weekend I thought.

RAA
Way back in 1953
The RAA put in 2 way radios in 17 fleet cars
That ends up being the first time that 2 way radios were used in breakdown vans in this state
It was that long ago , it was when West Torrens won their last SANFL Premiership

FORMATION
The RAA formed in 1903 and began the emergency road service in 1928
This mob have bailed me out a few times , and provide a great service

The RAA TV commercial adds featuring George Kapinaris , have been quite amusing over the years

This picture theater opened on this day 75 years ago

THE CAROUSEL GLENELG

Located at The Beachouse
Was imported from England in 1901
This makes it 114 years old
Would have been made in the 19th century
Its been around for 3 centuries that being the case
Its claimed to the oldest carousel in Australia

PICNIC IN ELDER PARK

The theme is a 175 years celebration at Elder Park
Its going to done up as it might have been in the 19th century
The famous rotunda at Elder park was constructed in 1882
Should be a fascinating day out

i'm not sure whether it still does but back when i used to go the the royal show, the same ''merry go round'' was in operation for the show

Born 22/1/1870
146 years old
This is the anniversary of its official opening

The first market trading was actually 23/1/1869
So it will be 147 years old since the origins

Great market, it has well and truly stood the test of time

So which is older? PAFC or Central Market?

Heres an interesting correspondence sent to the Advertiser

*There is a reason why the South Australian accent is different to the rest of the country , and it has a lot to do with the fact that South Australia was the only free state, the only one that didnt accept convicts.
Due to Irelands struggles for independence from England , a lot of convicts were Irish , and these have had an important influence on the development of the language.
South Australia , lacking this Irish input, thus speaks a more English English.*

One man behind free settlement in SA was Edward Wakefield
Wakefield wrote some letters on the matter, some published in the British press in 1829
In other parts of Australia, land was given free to the early settlers
Wakefield was of the opinion that land should be purchased , thus attracting proper workers instead of convict labor
The irony of the Wakefield submissions of 1829 , was that he was in jail at the time !

If Mr Wakefield had his own way Adelaide would have been named Wellington
Wakefield street in town , was named after Edwards brother Daniel Wakefield

POORAKA MARKET

We had the Brickworks Market close down a few years ago
Globe Derby Markets closed down recently
Been informed that the Pooraka Market maybe closing down next month ?
That would be  a pity if so, Ive enjoyed my visits there over the years

Pooraka markets definitely closing down, as for the Globe Derby markets i know why they closed down, because when at the trials on Sunday morning the market operators were there & at most 6 possible customers were roaming around & off course just up the road at the Gepps Cross Drive in you can't move or get a park because it is packed

If you catch the late movie at Gepps Cross on a Saturday night, you'll see some of the sellers lining up well before the late movie finishes at the drive-in!

The market may well end up being re-located to Port Adelaide
The Port/Enfield Council has spent about $20k on a study on a possible shift

If such a move was to eventuate , the expectation is that it might draw up to 10,000 more people than who go to the TI complex
Reason being somewhere between Sema4 and Port Adelaide would be closer and more accessible to more people

There was a fish market last century near the Birkenhead Bridge
Tommy Ruffs ended up on our kitchen table a fair bit

Torrens Island was also a Detention complex during WW1

Reckon somewhere near the Birkenhead Tavern could work. A big open area not used for much at all.

I was at the Torrens Is market a few weeks ago and there isn't much fish around. One boat is all I saw.The TI market itself doesn't occupy that much space. The parking is a dog's breakfast. Cars pull up anywhere and if you want to go to the toilet - well good luck with what you might contract there.

Not sure how they go with competing with Gepps X market which is much bigger.
If they combined it with some other mixed use stalls it could be quite an interesting drawcard to the Port.

Opinions divided if drive ins should be allowed to trade

It closed in 1998
The first was in Victoria , by the Hoyts group

This drive in became popular as cars would park in West Beach and Military roads to watch for free

Ahhh those were the daze !

The first drive ins appeared in the USA in 1933
They peaked in the late 1950s
From about 1958 onwards the numbers began to decline

YOURS
The most frequented drive inns attended by myself were the Woodville North and Gepps Cross ones
And yes, I did get entry to Woody Norths once via the Boot !

Pick up sport
Where individuals can play sport without an affliation to a sporting group
You register , roll up , and get a game
Excellent concept
