Re: Greatest SA Team
I must say I was a little confused with this, on the back page of today's paper it reads "With Adelaide Oval back in our hearts we pick a team of SA's greatest to play there"
Going through the team I can pick 4 players who never played there, Wanganeen, Ricciuto, Platten and McLeod.

Seems reasonable. It is going to be hard to judge how good pre WW2 players were as there is probably no-one around who saw them play. All the usual suspects make it and there are a few borderline players we can argue about.

I would say Platten definitely played there for Central and there would be a fair chance Ricciuto played there also.

McLeod as well - they would've been getting around in the SANFL when Sturt & South had AO as their home ground wouldn't they?

I thought it meant those that played state footy at Adelaide Oval, whatever, none of those are in my greatest SA team of all time.

Re: Greatest SA Team
Rucci has done a reasonable job I think...
however...there is no way Id have John Cahill in the side before one Jim Deane....
plenty of oldies Ive spoken to believe he was the equal or even better player than Quinn and Hank...
JIM DEANE PLAYING RECORD:
• 157 games and 95 goals for South Adelaide 1945 - 1953, 1956 - 1957
• 33 games and 17 goals for Richmond 1954 - 1955
• Captain of South Adelaide, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1957
MATCHES FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA: 14
ACHIEVEMENTS:
• Magarey Medallist 1953, 1957 (runner up in 1949, 1950, 1951)--- when South could barely win 1-2 games per year.
He played in the Quinn, Hank, Head, Fitzgerald era - winning a Magarey Medal wasnt that easy.!
• Six time best and fairest for South Adelaide, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1956, 1957
• Tomkins Medallist 1945
• Life member of South Adelaide 1956
. SANFL Hall of Fame.
COACHING RECORD:
• Coached South Adelaide, 1951 - 1953, 1970 - 1971
I was never a great fan of Lindsay Head either...played a lot of games- great durability,,mainly because he was rarely tackled, if you get my drift.

Also agree.
Cahill was a really good player, Deane was a champion.
As for Lindsay Head being tackled, they were the days if you threw the ball out in front of you just as you were tackled, it was a free for 'holding on'. Lindsay was a master at it and was well protected by the umps.
having said that, though, he was a wonderfully skilled player.

no not sure...I do recall that she was apparently a bit of a looker...and had a particularly amusing nickname too.....

no idea mate, i was only a kid but i just remember hearing every week that My Gal Sal was Lindsay Heads' horse, do you know why Lindsay wasn't granted a drivers licence when he attempted to get one so he could drive his horse ?.......today i'm convinced some of the drivers get theirs out of a Weetbix packet
