We all know the saga when Port originally tried to join the AFL, after all the clubs agreed to present a united front.

Port have now signed Henry Slattery and put out this statement:

"Slattery will work full time as player welfare managerwith Port Adelaide's AFL list during 2013, in a role unconnected to his service with the Magpies.

Good for Henry, who is a good person and would be mad not to accept that position. I wonder why, however, Port felt it necessary to add the part I've highlighted?

Feeling a little guilty, perhaps?

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

Surely they wouldn't have originally made that offer conditional on signing with the Magpies, would they?

Surely Not?

Oh, I've got a Harbour Bridge to sell, going cheap. Very Happy

Youa re spot on. It seems totally unfair that an SANFL club can recruit a player and at the same time offer him a job with their AFL club
No other SANFL club can do this which mena that have a distinct advantage.

Port have failed to see the logic why everyone else is looking at this with some concern.

They (Keith Thomas I think said it) argue that the his playing role with the Maggies and his work role with the Power are unconnected in terms of footy department operations.

I am happy to concede that much.

However, they are the only club that can offer the incentive of such off field employment, that does directly impact on the Magpies ability to recruit.

I don't understand how Thomas can't see this.

It is why I again state the urgency with which the SANFL needs to define what is ok and what is not between the Power and Magpies.

For Port surely can't.........

I think they may just be pinning their hopes to the AFL reserves push and it happening in the very term. If so, perhaps by the time the dust has settled on these Magpie / Power operational disparities, it won't matter and they will just carry on as they seem to be planning for.

But if the AFL reserves thing procrastinates, will they be caught out on their activities? After the salary cap issue, they are taking a risk with the SANFL's indulgence.

I agree and I think it goes further than that.

What if it was a condition of the job that he play with the Magpies?

Yes that was mentioned (or rumoured) too.

And we all know that such a condition would cause the Fair Work Ombudsman some concern too.
