Drug Testing at SANFL level
i believe that this year a large majority of players from every team will be tested every week, i have no problem with this for steroids or drugs, however these players can not take such things as cough drops etc when they have the sniffles a cold or the 'flu surely that is going overboard ? if i have a cold i'll take something & go to work so surely the same can be said for a SANFL player ?

That's interesting, bayman.
No West players were tested last week.

Head Trainers and Club Doctors are well educated in Drugs in Sport guidelines, so are well aware of what substances are "banned" under Elite Sports guidelines and which aren't, and which may show up as "suspect"
Any medication they issue is recorded in case the player is subject to testing - including use of Asthma inhalers and headache tablets.
If a player requires cold medicine, or even a nasal inhaler, there are specific ones which have a lower level of the banned substances, and the Head Trainer and Club Doctor will recommend these, but also record it has been advised.
Drug testing doesn't happen as often as it does at AFL level, but it does happen

Drug testing doesn't happen as often as it does at AFL level, but it does happen I THINK YOU'LL FIND THERE WILL BE MORE THIS SEASON
my point is surely any cough drop shouldn't be a problem as common sense should prevail

Depends what ingredients are in the cough drop
I remember a few years back Sam Riley made the Headlines after her coach gave her some cough medicine which had a banned substance in it. From memory I think he was banned from participation at any level of sport from a while, and she EVENTUALLY was allowed to swim, but after a lengthy investigations and court hearings.

Pseudofed (pseudoephedrine - a banned substance) was the drug that Volkers gave to her.

Good point bayman. Many of us would take a Codral or similar to make the difference between getting to work and not. SANFL players are not professional footballers in terms of full-timers, most have other jobs they need to get up for. I don't mind WADA doing the testing, but would hope a different set of standards exists for semi-professional sportspeople.

Forget the players. I'd like to see a few of the spectators drug tested.

Good one 'CC'
If bans were issued, I wonder which clubs would lose the most spectators ?

The trouble with common sense is it isn't as "common" as people may think. The AFL has made a complete hash of drug testing, so there's no reason why the SANFL wouldn't as well. Any system which cannot detect a confessed drug addict is inadequate.

G’day ‘StrayDog’, welcome to the forum.
In case you’re taking my response to CC’s post the wrong way, let me say I found that post
quite amusing and simply posted a throwaway line not directed at any club at all, in any way.
Is there a specific club you’re referring to?

No, that's cool Sabre, I took your post in its intended mode.Sabre wrote:G’day ‘StrayDog’, welcome to the forum.

Mine, intended in a similar vein, was a proverbial "pinch-hit" with a bunt. To wit that, hypothetically, those that have more might lose more by proportion. Law of averages and all that.
Thanks for the welcome.

Re: Drug Testing at SANFL level
i guess its one of those necessary evils and to maintain political correctness the Sanfl has to do it.....but in reality doesnt stop a determined drug user....there are a million ways around it and both parties are aware of that i guess its just to go through the motions...
