State League or SANFL

Listening on MMM tonight when they had Tex Walker live in the studio taking calls.

Walker referred the SANFL Comp as the State League, when asked about it he said they had been told to refer to the comp as the State League and not the SANFL.

This direction had come from the SANFL itself.

He thought it had something to do with the Crows and the Power not being referred to as their seconds team.

Who is pulling who's leg now.

I cringe everytime I hear the word..Stateleague... it really gives me the s--ts.
Its been the SANFL since 1876 or whenever, its never been the Stateleague or any other name. The 2 AFL teams have come in this season and SANFL will never be the same again, it will be compromised completely. Surely we can keep the name as it is and educate these "blow ins" that it is in fact the SANFL.

Yes, I agree, it's our SANFL, not some sudden 'State League'.

Talking Footy SA will only be referring to the SANFL.

So will everyone else who follows all the other real teams.

From memory he started to say reserves then quickly corrected himself to state side, which prompted Roo and Ditts to query Tex.

Riccuito then pointed out that they can refer to the side as the SANFL side or the State League side, but not as a 'Reserves side'.

Can I ask what Geelong, Collingwood etc are deemed to be in the VFL?

I think they refer to those sides as their VFL sides.

I guess the Western Bulldogs would be the exception as they have reverted their VFL sides name back to Footscray

I think that is fair direction from the Club.

Preferences for the Crows 2nd team

1st - Call it a new nickname ie Ravens (so there is no need to distinguish between 2 Crows sides in 2 different leagues)
2nd - Call it their SANFL side
3rd - Call it their state league side
4th - Call it their Reserves Side


That said we are a state league ... and I think the goal of being "the best state league in Australian sport" is a worthy mission statement, one I much prefer to "2nd best league outside of AFL".

I swear that I herd another Ravens player called it a state league to I think it was Reily on Channel Raven

who cares what ''they'' call it because they'll be using us as to simulate game style so to prepare players for AFL structures etc & that's why they are parasites

as for "2nd best league outside of AFL" c'mon Phil it isn't the 2ND best it is THE BEST league/competition outside the AFL

It bugs me when Olsen calls the respective leagues 'Sanfel' and 'Waffle'. Does he refer to the big leagues as 'Affel'?

agree, the term sanfel comes from ignorant Victorian commentators trying to put crap on Sa as they usually do

It is one of my pet football hates but it is hard to tell other media outlets to get it right when the President of the league leads by this example.
