Ryan Ferguson Retires Empty Ryan Ferguson Retires

Ryan Ferguson's retirement was confirmed at West's B & F tonight.

He was also joint winner, with Chris Schmidt, of the Steve Hamra Medal for B & F.

For the first time in Andrew Collin's six years, Fergie scored a 4 for his game against Glenelg at the Bay. Nobody has scored more than 3 in a game previously.

More on Fergie later.

one of the great modern day players, no doubt he would've been great in any era, good luck to him & his family in his retirement & this leaves a huge gap in Westies' team........r&b if he heads back to Melbourne would he be the type of person that may end up in the coaches box ? & (i would think so) if so could he be in the coaching box for Williamstown from next year ?

Yes, he seems to be a ready made coach in waiting. Having a very young family might go against that, though.

I doubt he'll be at Williamstown, but you never know.

Great decision by Andrew Collins to recruit him and make him captain.

The current record holder for West captaincy, Robert Loveday, 7 years, was at the B&F. Still looks fit enough to play.

These days when blokes like Ferguson come around (whether imported or home grown) in this league now, they stick out like the proverbial Dog's b...ls.

And I mean that in a good way, the cream always rises to the top and sometimes more quickly than usual.

Others who you would put in a similar category would be;
Sheedy (Sturt from Mildura)
Mackenzie (Eagles not sure from where)
Clayton (Port from Vic somewhere)
The Gowans (CD from Vic)

Apologies to a few others that could be named too. But ws just trying to illustrate the point.

Congrats to Ryan on his career, always a worthy adversary and unfortunate that it couldn't be capped off with a flag (almost).

I did read he was heading back to Vic, but he would have made a very good candidate to join Rubbers next year as an assistant, I reckon.
