Re: Best TV Shows of All Time
My brother was on the Channel Niners (the am version) circa early 70s. I thought it was ok, as I got the morning off school. Don't reckon he was at school at that stage.
In the studio set, Winky Dink asks him to say hello to all the children.
So he looks up and says, "But I can't see any children"
He ain't no Glove Puppet's fool

77 Sunset Strip was the first 'must not miss' show.
Efrem Zimbalist Jnr
but the real star was Ed Byrnes, as 'Kookie'.
A Kookie Wave was the hairstyle of choice (yes, me too).
(Yes, I know, not possible now)

Lets see if we can bring this dicsussion into the colour era....
Comedy:
Seinfeld is the best TV show of all time.I will not entertain any arguments.
The Office (UK)
Drama :
The Sopranos
Sons of Anarchy
And if none of you have seen the 6 episode Ricky Gervais show "Derek", do yourself a favour and seek it out. Very funny, emotional and thought provoking.

SEINFELD
Did you ever think Jerry Seinfeld was a look alike of Australian cricketer Michael Bevan ?
One episode of Seinfeld that cracked me was the one with The Move on it
I'm not sure if I have laughed as much when George tried the Move
The Move was a sexual thing that Jerry did with outrageous success and tried to teach it to George

Agree, Booney, 'Derek' is a very good show.
An acquired taste type of show, isn't it?
Are you telling me TV is in colour now?

TELETHON APPEALS
Channel 9 Telethon Appeals.
I recall collecting money for these appeals on my pushbike when at High School.
Did this for a couple of years.
Used to tell all the kids to watch me on TV as the Telethons were televised.
I would be as proud as punch being on TV once, and having my name broadcast on both occasions.
From memory the first year I did it, I did it solo.
The second year I was a bit of a Pied Piper , and had several lads on the pushies collecting with me.
I loved the compliments of the Channell 9 staff at the time, but for the life of me cant recall who they were, other than they were some of the big names of TV at the time
I had a bit of celebrity status at school back then !

Re: Best TV Shows of All Time
Interesting article showing tv programs on this day. Tuesday, July 29 1975 Sydney morning herald.
I found it via a link Redandblack posted in the footy section... although it's a Sydney paper, almost all programs were the same Australia wide, notice time closed.
On Channel 9 the last program called Viewpoint...now i might be wrong, but i think it was hosted by a bloke called Bob Sacremento (or similar sounding name) only went for about 5 minutes with political talk.

Ah the days when TV stations would close. My youngest brother was an early riser, when he was around 4-5-6 years old he would always get up and watch the 'test pattern' until the cartoons came on.

Re: Best TV Shows of All Time
Channel 10 on the 1975 programmes list posted by First Blood had some ripper shows
4:30 LOST IN SPACE
Indeed ! A classic show for all us Neanderthal Ninnys
Johnathon Harris as Dr Smith, is an actor who I consider one of the all time greats
5:30 GILLIGANS ISLAND
Ginger or Maryanne ?
I'm not fussy , either !
Bob Denver played a much different part to his Maynard days in Dobie Gillis
8:30 NUMBER 96
I have never been a soapy fan , but watched this show
Abigails assets wow ! She ran a close 2nd to Candy Raymond
And that famous Les Whittaker line "We can make a fortune."
96 was a provocative show of the times, included nudity+ homosexual scenes
And poor ol Herbert !
9:00 THE BOX
Another soapy I could watch, back to back after N96
It certainly was not the same Ken James that played in Skippy !
The most controversial moment from this show was when Judy Nunn pashed off another sheila
I didnt want to miss an episode when Cheryl Rixon starred
I still cant believe my parents let me watch Number 96 and The Box
It would be great to watch these shows again

Re: Best TV Shows of All Time
The first 18 months of Number 96 are lost forever, sadly, due to an incredible blunder by 0-10 (now Channel 10) not long after the show finished.Scrappy wrote:Channel 10 on the 1975 programmes list posted by First Blood had some ripper shows

They unspooled the entire first 18 months of the show, stored on videotape, to create a giant display of old celluloid for an industry function that was being held. Some of the most controversial episodes ever made are unavailable in any format. Some clips of highly controversial moments were saved by the network, however, for posterity, hence why they appear in short clips shows.
The Box, while largely surviving in some formats, will almost certainly never be repeated again on Australian television due to defamation laws. Some of the characters were too clearly based on real life television and public figures and it has been stated by television insiders many times that if the show was repeated, the offending network would be sued almost immediately.
Scriptwriters did admit that the owner of the fictional television network, Sir Henry Usher, was based very heavily on Hector Crawford.
