Most SKILLFUL players in the SANFL over the years
Who are the absolutely most skillful players who have played in the SANFL over the years?
Apart from the obvious - Robran and Ebert - I reckon 3 probably stand out - Darren Jarman, Paul Bagshaw and Lindsay Head.
Others:
- Michael Aish
- David Marshall
- John Platten
- Gilbert McAdam
- Craig Bradley

I think Peter Meuret was possibly the most skilful player I've seen at West. Not as consistently good as your list of stars, Ff, but often capable of freakish things and a joy to watch play.
The other was Bruce Lindner, could mark anything, could kick 60 Metres, could do anything.

Yeah, definitely agree re Meuret, he certainly had x-factor.
Lindner too, such a versatile player, could basically play anywhere on the ground except ruck.Such a natural talent. Was he a nephew of Don and Hank?

Re: Most SKILLFUL players in the SANFL over the years
A couple of Norwood players that had the talent but didnt last long enough
Richard Anderson
Mark Jones
Both sucumbed to bad legs
Anderson from shin soreness from memory
Jones from legs of the Fourtrellas and Trebles he missed !
Richard Anderson looked a million dollars when he was firing
He was quick , had this ability to bounce and bound away from opponents and had magnificent disposal skills
I saw him carve up Port Adelaide one day , playing mainly in the midfield, and he kicked about 6 goals 7 points
Mark Jones was an enigma
For a short while he was freakish , very D Jarmanesque
Played on a forward flank , and kicked some incredible goals
His ball handling skills were sensational
One year he kicked about 60 goals, and was financially sponsored by some Norwood supporters per goal
He broke his leg at Alberton from memory in perhaps a callous fashion by a Port Adelaide footballer
The same sponsors offered a financial inducement to another Norwood footballer for a retribution act on that Port player
Fortunately it never eventuated
Jones ended up at Centrals for a while, but never recaptured his best form.
If he was injury, booze and TAB free , it was scary how good he might have been
Off the field Mark was a happy go lucky person , and a terrific bloke

He won the Dogs Leading Goal Kicker Award, in 1998, with just 26 goals, from memory...Scrappy wrote:Mark Jones was an enigma

Mr Magic
There were 2 of them
One was a proffesional punter Bob Robertson
He used to do the Mr Magic computer odds in the Adelaide papers last millenium
Paul Bagshaw
The other person often referred to as Mr Magic was Sturt's Paul Bagshaw
How do you describe this bloke ?
I'm not sure if I've seen a more laid back laconical footballer
Baggy would appear to go half pace and yet still elude his opponents
His evasive and dodging skills were unbelievable at times
Baggy had impeccable disposal skills as well
The other memory of Baggy was that he used to drop kick the ball a fair bit
Baggys adopted nickname of Mr Magic is very appropriate

P. Bagshaw, after a free or mark one day he lost his shorts & just kicked them away with along with his jockstrap & calmly booted a goal.....NO we don't need to see the footage either

Re: Most SKILLFUL players in the SANFL over the years
I remember a day at Woodville when I was a kid. Probably about 73 or 74. He was running backwards with the ball seemingly going over his head and 3 Woodville blokes bearing down towards him.
But he calmly just put his hands behind his back and marked it.
Another time he was cornered by another bunch of South guys and couldn't dispose of the ball by going forward. So he again put his hands behind his back with the ball and handpassed to a teammate running from behind. Bloody umpire called it a throw, mainly because I reckon he thought it wasn't possible to handpass it fairly like that.
It wasn't a throw. Baggy would bamboozle the umpies as well as the players.
The 1st ruck: Davies, Bagshaw, Nunan
Now that was some midfield!

Fair midfield;)
Chambo, I was having a chat today about your hero, Mr Chambers, and why West didn't sign him after he trained with us a few times before he went to Sturt.
The name 'Doug Thomas' was mentioned:D:D
He trained with a mate who also went to Sturt with him, similar sort of name.
