Glynn Hewitt was chased hard by Richmond. As a trade, West got 3 players? From memory, we got Greg Hollick, ? Hunt and a tall ruck man whose name I'll remember soon.

Hunt didn't do much, the ruck an was OK and Hollick was good for us.

Was the ruckman David Gurney?

Thanks, rig. First time I'd forgotten his name ever Embarassed

I recall Ken Deards kicking a bag of goals at Adelaide Oval in a post-season non-premiership game.

Tony Hunt was the other guy. Two years after the trade we got Hewitt back.

My memory is having a bad day.

It wasn't Deards who kicked those goals, it was someone else.

Help me, F9, John Bandy?

Yeah I think you're thinking of the Coca Cola Cup, and my memory is that John Bandy kicked 8 goals in one game. The confusion might be because he was also recruited from Western Australia.

Meuret did, I think, return to Broken Hill, after 5 league games with Woodville and Oberon Pirak (also from Broken Hill and West's General Manager) convinced him to give it another crack with West.

FOOTYfollower wrote:Yes, that is all well before my time RIG, thanks for the background to the events in that era though.

Re Davies and Schneebichler, I think the circumstances were a little different, wasn't Davies appointed coach at South, so was player/coach capacity...whereas Schneebichler I imagine went essentially to play in a premiership I imagine (not that thats sufficient reason for him to still be shunned by his former club though).

Torrens cashed in and got Schache, Popplestone and Darryl Smith from Sturt. From memory they were all quite disillusioned about the events surrounding sacking of Keane.

RE Keane and Davies
I believe Davies even offered to play in the 2s if that was Keane's wish just to stay around and help the youngsters. This was when his knees were not great and his role was basically at the goal front.
Keane wasn't much interested in that. And in unfortunate circumstances one of our greats, probably the greatest for me (7 time B&F) left the club as the leading goalkicker. And then had 3 years at South where his goalkicking returns were more than respectable.

Not sure if he goes back to South. But 3 years ago, South did bring him back for the game at Unley which celebrated the 1940 (I think it was) grand final. I have a picture from that day of the great man with the Chambo Choir. And after the game having a chat with the Jumbo at the bar.

Me: "Thanks for taking the time to have a picture with us.
Jumbo "No worries boys, that's what footy is all about"

Jumbo absolutely had charisma dripping off him.

And then as I was orderering a drink after him, with 3 drinks in his hand, he turns and says, "enjoy boys, but stay of the p!ss."

The subsequent sacking of Keane was the catalyst to Sturt spending 10 years in the cellar and almost the ruin of the club. I often ponder what Sturts's fortune may have been if Keane wasn't sacked.

Both Bandy and Deards came from East Perth, but Bandy was at West from about 1971 whereas as previously stated, Deards played in East Perth's 1972 Premiership. It's safe to say that both players were better in Western Australia than they were here. Bandy played nearly 100 games for East Perth, but other than the Coca Cola Cup effort, I don't think he did much during his time at Westies.

I think that the Coca Cola Cup was only played in 1971 and 1972. I know Woodville won it one year.

You are correct in that Meuret did return to Broken Hill after playing at Woodville as a teenager. What a great recruit for West.

I don't have much to add to that, but I'm wondering if the Bandy mentioned is the father of former Dockers (WB too perhaps) player, Daniel.

I don't think so Ff but not 100% sure. And Bandy was a rover so for Daniel Bandy to be his son he'd have to have married a woman about 8 ft tall.

Definitely not Daniel Bandy's father.

Did Bradley Ryan go opposite to Burton? ie did he go North to West, whilst Burton West to North..??

Fry South to Sturt was an intersting one - perhaps he was mates with Michael Graham through an NT connection?

Ken Eustice's playing career was before my time, but - I think?? He went from West..coached Centrals, then finished at Glenelg? I'm presuming Kerley influence took him to the Bays, but I could have my "facts" wrong there.

Anyone got any clarifying info on Eustice?

I think Bradley Ryan was originally at West?

Not 100% sure, though.

Brad Ryan and Burton both westies lads.

Burton was interesting as my recollection is that Neil Kerley played him in his first league game straight out of what was the thirds at that time - now U/18 - perhaps others could confirm?
