So, given that the scientists' predictions are being confirmed, why don't you believe them?

My view is that regardless of whether climate change is real or not, we have an obligation as the dominant species on the planet to look after the environment that we live in.

Spewing tonnes of waste into the air can’t be good, so of course we should look for cleaner alternatives.

I’m very much a pessimist when it comes to this stuff though - the base human natures of greed and selfishness always win out in the end IMO. You’re average person won’t be giving up their flat screen TV, air-conditioning, or fossil fuelled transport anytime soon. They’ll be all for alternative energy until someone tries to build a wind farm in their backyard (see today’s paper). They’ll be all for conservation while building their McMansion on another piece of lost arable land.

That said, I have faith in the ingenuity and adaptability of the human race to deal with the consequences of climate change. It’s just that nothing will happen until the need for action becomes too great to ignore.

I'm interested in why so many accept without question the overwhelming majority of science, but are so against the 98% of scientists regarding climate change?

Not against it, but comparing it with records and observations and weather patterns since records have been kept.

One extreme day of weather = mass Media hysteria = climate change = certain scientists inflating their egos = must be true.

I don't doubt we have contributed to it in some ways, but not in ways some people would make you believe.

The scientists analyse those charts in far more detail than any of us, so I just wonder why so many are vehemently against it (I don't mean anyone on here).

Mr Murdoch is against the concept, so does media coverage from his columnists, such as Andrew Bolt, etc, make a difference?

Against climate change or against lifestyle/living choices? I think for some people it's all too hard to change habits or even bother exploring green ones.

Personally, I agree with GNuts, and believe that we are the custodians of the earth and need to look after it. I try to do my part and be as green as I possibly can - recycling, picking up other's street litter etc.

I just don't believe that the weather patterns etc are tied into it as much as some scientists claim.

I can remember as a kid down on Moana beach, people would have their radios on (5AD at the time) and every 1/2 hour a tune would blurt out for all sun bakers......'Time to turn so you don't burn' .. They should now change it to every 10 minutes.
The earth is changing, polar caps are melting, rain forests which are the lungs of the earth are slowly disappearing, and with all the crap we humans push out in to the atmosphere, somethings got to give.

Funny that today's temperature in Sydney was the hottest ever, 3 degrees more than that day in 1790.

I find it wise to be a little cynical of articles who describe all the people who believe the science as 'climate warming cultists and their gullible fans'

I won't get into the factual errors.

I don't know what they were using to measure temperatures back in 1790 R&B, but yesterday was the hottest day Sydney had since 1939, which was a half a degree hotter than back then.

Which was quickly followed by the hottest Sydney day ever, testy

The there can only be one reason for it R&B, it has to be climate change, it just has to be, there can be no other reason that Sydney has just had its hottest day ever.

Seeing that we accept science without question just about everywhere else, can I ask why you don't accept it at all in just this field, testy (and anyone else)?

well i believe that ''The Great Lakes'' are the last of the ice age (heard it on the radio) so perhaps the planet has been global warming for 2 or 3 million years ago, perhaps if both the Artic & Antartic polar caps are still melting as well the global warming as i said could've been happening since the ice age

Do we?? Usually a hypothesis is tested rigorously before becoming a scientific theory (theory being the key word here, as it can keep being retested in search of more/other explanations).

I usually state that I believe in anything until someone proves to me that it doesn't exist, i.e. UFOs, Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, Leprechauns, Jesus etc, but in this case, there are too many factors here for me to go "yep! it's definitely climate change!".

You may ask me that R&B, But HTWWW has pretty much summed it up for me, far too many times in my 58 years of living have scientists said this, only to do a u turn 20 years down the track and say something else.

When getting treatment for health problems there are millions of people on this planet who shy away from conventional medicines (drugs) that doctors recommend in favour of natural remedies or herbal medicines, many of them believing that the drugs do more harm long term than any good This not my preference but each to there own.
