Do You Remember.... Empty Do You Remember....

Post by C.K Wed Dec 26, 2012 8:41 am

....many of those little things from growing up that leave many of today's generation scratching their heads, saying....What??

Thought yesterday about something I hadn't pondered for many, many years - who use to have Kalkitos as a kid?

Add away folks, what are some of your memories from growing up in Adelaide?

That's a dangerous question, CK.

I think it's time for a few of the more mature posters( Wink ) among us to go further back then you do and start a 'Do You Remember' a decade or tow before you.

Free milk at school each morning (how long did that last?)

77 Sunset Strip - Did you have a 'Cookie' wave?

The IVM Man.

Helping put out fires in paddocks that are now inner suburbs.

Hi-Tops and Icy Poles

Watching footy at Kensington Oval.

'Chucker' Meckiff

Watching Lindsay Head and the other stars of the time.

Sawley's punch in the Adelaide Oval State Game v's Victoria.

Hop Harrigan serial on the radio

'Chucklers' Weekly'.

etc, etc, etc......

iirc, that was the game when you as the bowler slid to first ball & a picture appears saying what the delivery was say 'bumper' & the batsman slid his arc to 'bumper' & the picture appears saying the runs or how he was out & then repeated to second ball, third ball up to EIGHTH ball etc....the sliding of both was in arcs

Late 1970s
Petrol 19 cents a litre

In the latter evening having to drive to the Cavan petrol station to fill up with petrol , when all other stations closed early evening
It was self serve
By self serve , it was putting 20 cent pieces into a bowser !

Driving to Ballarat for under $18 in fuel in my HR Holden back in the mid 70's.

As a child....
Pubs closed at 6pm.
Most street lights went off at 1am.
Living at Rosewater and walking to Port Adelaide Primary School on the corner of Grand Junction and Commercial Rd's. I'd spend my 3 pents bus fare on a ice block at school and walk home instead. Smile
Ozone picture theaters across adelaide turn into Tom The Cheap supermarkets.

When i was about 11 years old i was given a Motorific Torture Track as a Christmas present and i thought it was the bee's knee's of presents, nothing could top that.... Smile

First blood ,
I was raised in Kilkenny and Athol Park
This is a memory you and Robranisgod might relate to as well

Rowley Park Speedway on Torrens Road Brompton
I used to attend in the 1970s
The smell of the dust , the roar of the engines, I was easily entertained

The thing about Rowley Park was the noise
When I lived at Kilkenny , about 3 kms away, you could hear the roaring noise
We shifted to Athol Park , about 6 kms away , and you could still hear the blazing roars

First Blood , could you hear the roars from Rosewater ?

My idol in the 1970s was JB , Johnny Boulger , a legend

Rowley Park is now a housing estate complex
In the 1990s a friend of mine had a unit there
We worked out the old racetrack was below his unit

I too lived in Kilkenny for a few years (Grayson street) just off David Tce.. and i could hear the noise of Rowley Park which i also went to... Charlie Monk (i think) on the bikes was my favourite along with Bill Wigsell in the speed cars who recently passed away. That was the place to be on a Friday night.

I don't remember hearing Rowley Park as far away as Rosewater, we used to live opposite the Flinders Hotel on Grand Junction Rd. The street noise probably blocked that out. Smile

When i went to Croydon Boys Tech back in the late 60's, i often met Mr Whippie in what we called the Head masters Office back then (not Principal ). Mr Whippie was a cane and i coped it across the palms of my hand a few times for punishment of one kind or another, pulling away from the cane as it came down might have missed but you copped it again anyway, some times it caught the ends of your finger tips which i can tell you, it bloody hurt. Smile

Another type of punishment was a belt of the yard ruler across the backside in the classroom from the teacher, that stung a bit as well, but it gave the other kids watching a bit of a laugh. Smile

This type of punishment is a big no no in schools these days. I wonder what it would be like if it was brought back ? My guess is every school would have a law suit on it's hands. Smile

I wonder what ever happened to all the fish and especially the big Snapper that were in the big tank. Did they release them back into the wild when Marineland closed down or did they end up on some ones dinner plate? Very Happy
