Nathan Bassett
Looks like Nathan Bassett might be signing with the Gold Coast Suns as an Assistant Coach...

Re: Nathan Bassett
Think the Adelaide Crows should do whatever it takes to get Bassett into the club even if it means creating a position for him as they did for Ben Hart, to let Bassett slip through their fingers is not wise if its about having the best people there to do the job.

I'm sure he's on their radar for the future Ben W. It will do him no harm to do a few years apprenticeship at another club.
Generally speaking assistant coaches who transition into a head coach role have been more successful when doing so from outside rather than internally.

Actually, it's not something I've pondered before, but it makes for a well balanced debate.
On one hand you have the record of 7 flags in a decade for Laird. He inherited a good team and maintained the status quo, some would argue he took them to a new level.
On the other hand you have a coach who inherited a team on the bones of its backside, a club struggling to avoid extinction, and in three seasons wins them a flag, a runners up, as well as regular finals participation.
I've often said I would have loved to have seen Laird take up a new challenge and take on South Adelaide to see just how far he could have taken them. Over the years we've seen the dominance of John Cahill (10 flags) and Fos Williams (9 flags), very comfortable in their natural habitat, not so effective once they stepped outside.
On the other hand we saw Neil Kerley who only won 4 flags at 5 clubs, but each one a major achievement.
I think it's an interesting argument.

Agree it is a very interesting argument, for sure, AH...
I just think that the challenge ahead of Bassett, should he stay in charge, would be to have sustained success...
Turning the club around is a wonderful achievement and capped off with a dominant season and ultimate prize. I'm just not sure 1 flag can be compared to 7 in 10 seasons.
If the Legs win say 1 or 2 more flags out of the next 3 or 4 years and remain up there, with Bassett at the helm, certainly comparisons could be made.
Laird did inherit a good playing list but to have the sustained success that he has had with the regular turnover clubs have, over such a long period of time, is something that is truly a remarkable achievement.
The Dogs have clearly come back to the pack over the last couple of years and don't have that X Factor about them as much any more. I think the real challenege of Roy's coaching will be to see how he adapts his playing style and squad to how SANFL is played these days.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, is Bass now staying?

All indicators are that Bass will coach Norwood in 2013, but there's been nothing official at this point in time. I still believe that had Ratten not been appointed at Hawthorn, Bass would have been there.
Still, it may work to his advantage if he has another successful season there will be far more interest in his services.

Re: Nathan Bassett
Out of interest, how many coaches have made a successful transition from SANFL to AFL since the AFL's inception (1990)?
Off hand I can't think of many at all. Neil Craig was reasonably successful. Chocco Williams snaffled an AFL flag. That'd just about be it wouldn't it?

Alistair Clarkson comes to mind immediately.
Peter Rhode also moved into a head coaching job at the Western Bulldogs.

Re: Nathan Bassett
Yes, just a slight mistake omitting Alistair Clarkson from my post.
Still, I can think of a few who have left SANFL with plaudits only to go nowhere, or have little success.
For example I remember the hype around Shaun Rehn being almost as big as Nathan Bassett's. Get him to the Crows blah blah. He's had a succession of assistant coaching roles since, but hasn't achieved anything of huge note really.

Others that come to mind:
Neil Balme has been successful in the football industry, but not as an AFL head coach.
Jack Cahill did OK with the Power in the first 2 years.

Word around the AFL traps is Bassett was interviewed by several clubs for assistant coaching roles, the general feeling is his asking price was way too high, and he isn't a "team player", meaning they doubted his preparedness to work with and accept the methods of existing head coaches. This is an area Bassett needs to work on if he is to have a long term future in the game.

Would I be too harsh to say maybe he has "tickets on himself" ?

Tickets or no tickets, if that assessment is true it doesn't bode well for him on the "bigger" stage.

Sometimes if people appear to exhibit an attitude of arrogance that can mean they are pretty good at what they do. Some people are far better suited to a lone ranger type of role and despite modern AFL methods of building teams of people, sometimes you need someone at the top who is not afraid to make their own decisions and call it as they see it.
