I didn't witness either
Perhaps RedandBlack did
going on memory from school there was a name called ''De Root'' or similar does anyone know what was his/her claim on the Sydney Harbour Bridge ? just guessing perhaps he/she was the person who broke through & cut the ribbon before the person who was supposed to do it

Third time lucky
Eva Braun, after two previous unsuccessful suicide attempts, committed suicide
She was married the day before
It ends up being a fast and fuhrerious marriage

a parents biggest fear................i watched a doco on the crime station about this & the Wanda Beach case & from memory there is a theory it was committed by the same mongrel & even on his deathbed the said mongrel would not confirm or deny these allegations one way or another, i remember the name but perhaps it's best not to post it, the said mongrel was convicted for other kidnappings & so forth

The person who refused on his deathbed to confirm or not that he was the murderer of the 2 girls from Wanda beach was Derek Percy, a despicable character who died of cancer.
I think it was confirmed he was at the beach that day but no other evidence was found.

Wins this battle, but he'll lose the war.
This would be enough for Turnbull to turn up the heat and make a serious "challenge" not just watch as a spill occured/failed.

Whatever happened to running the country and making it a better place for its citizens?
Now it's all just about getting re-elected. A media driven popularity contest which has turned the serious business of running a country into a very expensive reality tv show - and not even a very entertaining one at that.

Hear hear.
It's become laughable, without being funny, tragic without being sad and while I once thought our nations future was in the hands of the best people for the job I no longer believe so. Worse still, I believe the modern "career politician" now means we are destined to have these vanilla copy cats breed uncontrolled and fill our "seats" for ever more.
If I could be more cynical, I would.

I query whether this is to be the norm from now on - Labor or Liberal.
Leader making too many gaffs (media / captain's calls etc) and the party doesn't like it and set about replacing him.
Abbott seems to be following the same script as Rudd.

He was fantastic in the role of vicious opposition leader, but was never cut out to be PM.

Re: On this day in history...
We have a bunch of self interested hypocrites in Canberra.
The Libs made hay on "broken promises" then proceed to break their own promises.
The ALP now vote against spending cuts that were part of their election platform.
The Greens want to impose taxes on polluters, yet oppose an increase in fuel excise on petrol, which is one of our biggest polluters and which was also one of their past policies.
The Senate is controlled by loops with one issue to push and who get less then 0.5% of the vote.
Instead of trying to find common ground for the common good, we have 3 parties that are just intent on opposing everything the others suggest. Its become a farce.

William Oughtred died on this day
He invented the slide rule
That contraption I used in high school
Used but never fully understood
Had William Oughtred been alive today he would be 441 years old

July 1st is Victoria Day
On this day in 1851 there was the separation of Victoria from New South Wales
That makes Victoria 164 years old today, a calculation I made with out the use of a slide rule

14/7/1770
James Cook and his crew almost sank when The Endeavour had a mishap at the Great Barrier Reef
That was 10/6/1770
The Endeavour had to be repaired on land
The following month
On 14/7/1770 one of the crew shot an animal
That animal was an unknown to these Poms
It was examined
The skin of the animal sent back to England
Joeseph Banks recorded the name of this animal as a kangaru or kanguroo
Yep 14/7/1770 was the first time the Poms had seen a kangaroo
